    1. Re: Search for Jacob Brinkley, Farmer in Nansemond Co.,Suffolk, Va B 1775

    3. I need some help in searching for my grandfather Jacob Brinkley B 1775 in Nansemond Co.,Suffolk, Va and he married Apsley Griffin in 1805. They had one son Admiral Brinkley and he was born in Nansemond Co. and died in Nansemond Co. the problem is the courthouse burned and I can not find any records on his property where he purchased it or sold it and any tax records or personal property documents. I don't know where he is buried. I cannot find a birh or death certificate or marriage certificate. I am up against a brick wall. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me to locate my grandfather grave or where he farmed. He was listed as a farmer and a planter in Nansemond Co. and i have searched everywhere to find some records, church, Bible, marriage and the Archives do not have anything on him. If someone in the Brinkley family sees this , please I would greatly appreciate your help and any pictures of the Jesse M. Brinkley family. I have found most everything on all my grandfathers except this one and I can't break this brick wall. 3. Thanks but I've been to this page and checked all the cemetery listings for La Grange Twp. Pliny Kellogg isn't listed in any of them. I did find the listing at the bottom of the page that says he's buried in La Grange Twp. but I can't locate his grave or any other additional information than what was on that page. It is said that he moved to Lorain Co. in his old age to be near his sons who would be Marquis de Lafayette and Noah. I haven't been able to find Noah anywhere yet but Marquis de Lafayette Kellogg moved to, and was buried in, IA. I'll keep searching. :-)

    3. "Patriot" in the Sons of the Americna Revolution (SAR) definition not only includes those directly involved (like militia and Continental Army troops) in the armed conflict. They also include descendants of people who supported the effort, by supplying goods and services. Sometimes the most difficult part in becoming an SAR member is figuring out if you have a partiot in your bloodline. Then the challenge is documenting your genealogy to that person, since the Patriot has to be a direct blood kin. But once you have all that, it is quite a rewarding experience, and your kids and grandkids will be able to join by proving they are related to you..much easier task than going back eight generations...or ten in their case. For more information on the SAR, or on finding an SAR chapter near you, contact: http://www.sar.org/default.htm Sparks Logan M. 3. Someone has just alerted me to the fact that "Mass. Soldiers & Sailors" is also available on-line. I don't have an exact link for it myself, just many hits on Google. Perhaps someone else can nose around and find a good one. Joanne Garland ----------------------- Massachusetts has the multi-volume "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the American Revolution," which devotes a paragraph or more to each participant in the war. Sometimes the same man is listed in two or more units, each with a separate paragraph as to what his activites were in that unit. If you can query someone who has access to this set of books (available in many Massachusetts libraries), they may be willing to do a look-up for you and make a photocopy of the page on which your ancestor is listed.

    3. I think the SAR starts the conflict with the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774 and ends on November 26, 1783, which I believe was the date of the Treaty of Paris. 3. The simple answer is Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The truth is more complicated: the Brits didn't just pick up their marbles, go home, and negotiate a peace treaty. The war continued in the west. The Battle of Blue Licks in Kentucky -- considered at least by Kentuckians as part of the Revolution -- occurred on August 19, 1782. Clinton and the Brits remained holed up in New York City, and Washington had to keep the Continental Army stationed just north of New York at Newburgh (on the Hudson) until 1783 to keep them from breaking out and starting things all over again. (This was where the Newburgh Conspiracy occurred, when WAshington declined the offer of his officers to become king.) Between 1781 and 1783, in addition to Blue Licks, there were numerous skirmishes with Indians on the western frontier provoked, coordinated, and often led by the British garrison at Detroit. Somewhere long ago, I read a figure that suggested that there were more American casualties -- primarily in the west -- than all of 1775-1781. (One source puts US total casualties in the War were 4,435 slightly less than the number killed on 9/11 and the War in Iraq.) Logan M. 2. Joanne Garland
    3. Pat, I purchased this CD a few years ago and was disappointed in its limited scope. A more complete and comprehensive resource, if you can travel, is the microfilm collection available in any branch of the National Archives. There you can find copies of the actual record cards. Many states, Connecticut and New York in particular, also have excellent books that list participants in the Revolution, arranged under the names of their commanding officers. Massachusetts has the multi-volume "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the American Revolution," which devotes a paragraph or more to each participant in the war. Good luck! 3. I would appreciate feedback on this resource for tracing ancestors serving in the Rev. War. If anyone has particular books or CD's that they feel are valuable resources, I would think other 'newbies' on research would like to know that, too. Thank you! Pat J.
