Congress has completed work on the Interior Appropriations Bill and sent it to the President for his signature. The legislation includes $200,000 for the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Act sponsored by Senators Hillary Clinton of New York and John Warner of Virginia. That Act was approved by the Senate last year, but needed funding, which it now has. In addition to including the funds for the National Park Service to develop programs to commemorate the remaining 225th anniversaries of battles and events of the Revolutionary War, the funding measure encourages funding at a similar level for the next fiscal year as we move into 2006 and the 225th Anniversary programs for the Battles of Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown. I got this request from someone not on the list. The war in the South is definitely not one of my areas of expertise. Can anyone help? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, Really enjoyed the write-up of the Battle from Lossing's Field Book. My GGGG Grandfather, Alexander Chisholm appears to have been captured that day as a member of the Royal Highland Emigrants - Nova Scotia Marines. He and several others were on the Glasgow Packet, but it was destroyed. They were left behind in the battle: _http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:fdBaUiE2rkkJ:www.84th.com/website/articles/marine.htm+Captain+%22Alexander+Campbell%22++%22Glasgow+packet%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 Do you happen to know where the prisoners were held in Charlestown and for how long? He eventually was in Maryland where he was exchanged in August of 1778. Any help finding out about his POW days is greatly appreciated! The following are some of the General Orders which established the Corps of Light Infantry to be under Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne in 1779. They only address the organization of troops destined to be in the 1st and 2nd Light Infantry Regiments. I have not found orders to the CT, MA, and NC regiments which also provided Light Infantry Companies for the 3rd and 4th LI Regiments. General Orders Head Quarters, Smith's Tavern, Saturday, June 12, 1779. Parole Betwick. Countersigns Brest, Deane. The following formation of the three divisions of the Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania troops is immediately to take place for the present campaign: The 2nd. R.&F. 5th. Virginia regiments to form one battn. and furnish one and an half comp. of L. Infantry 62. 11th 7th. to form one battalion and furnish one company of Light Infantry 41. 8th. 103. 3rd to form one battalion. 4th. 6th. and to form one battalion and furnish two companies of Light Infantry 82. 2nd. St. Regt. Gist's and to form one battalion and furnish one company of Light Infantry 41. 1st. St. Regt. 1st. and to form one battalion and furnish half a company of Light Infantry 21. 10th 144. 1st. Maryld. Regt. to form one battalion and furnish one compy. of L. Infantry 41. 5th. to form one battalion. 7th. to form one battalion. 3rd. to form one battn. and furnish one compy. of Light Infantry 41. R.&F. [Rank and File] 2nd to form one battn. and furnish one company of L. Infantry 41. 6th. to form one battalion. 4th. to form one battn. and furnish one compy. of Light Infantry 41. The Delaware Regiment to form one battalion. 1st. Penns. Regts. to form one battn. and furnish one company of L. Infantry 41. 7th 10th. to form one battalion. 2nd. to form one battn. and furnish one company of Light Infantry 41. 3rd. and to form one battn. and furnish two companies of Light Infantry 82. 6th 9th. Penns. Regts. to form one battalion and furnish two companies of Light Infantry 82. 5th. The companies of Light Infantry are to be immediately drawn out agreeable to this proportion. The officers commanding regiments will be particularly careful in the choice of the men, which is a duty, the good of the service and the credit of their respective regiments equally demand; When it is considered that in every army the honor of a regiment and that of its Light Company are intimately connected, the officer commanding it cannot but be solicitous to furnish men that will support the reputation of his regiment. The companies from the several brigades will parade tomorrow morning 11 o'clock near the Maryland division, where the Adjutant General is desired to pass the men, their clothes, arms and accoutrements under a critical inspection, and return all who on any account shall appear unfit for this kind of service to their regiments to be replaced by others whom he shall approve. A Captain, Subaltern and three Serjeants are to be appointed to each company. __________ Note: 16 Light Infantry Companies. Each company: 2 Officers, 3 Sergeants, 41 Privates. _____________________________________ GENERAL ORDERS 55 [Note:To keep the record complete, as before mentioned in a like instance, these General Orders are given herewith, though the Commander in Chief was not with the Army on this date. ] Head Quarters, Smith's Tavern, Tuesday, June 15, 1779. The sixteen companies of Light Infantry drafted from the three divisions on this ground are to be divided into four battalions and commanded by the following officers; 4. companies from the Virginia line by Major Posey. 4. ditto from the Pennsylvania line by Lt. Oops! A typo: >>> in 1775, they were 11,219; in 1776, they increased to 46,8865; <<< The correct number for 1776 is 45,865 and would reflect an end-of-the-year accounting. The increase reflects the deployment of Burgoyne's army to succor Quebec (British, Brunswick, and Hesse-Hanau troops), the deployment for Clinton's army (British troops from Ireland) to Cape Fear as the jumping-off point for the ill-fated attempt to capture Charlestown (now Charleston SC) and the two divisions of Hessians (Hesse-Cassel and Waldeck) sent to reinforce New York. The second divisionson of Hessians (von Knyphausen's) didn't arrive at New York until 20 October. http://www.pastportal.com/cwdl_new/VA_Gazet/Images/D/1779/0015hi.jpg Bob Brooks
Citing London newspapers, the Virginia Gazette, isssue of 05 Mar 1779, included the following report: "The land forces employed in North America in the year 1774, were 6884; in 1775, they were 11,219; in 1776, they increased to 46,8865; and in 1777, they amounted to 48,616; out of those we have lost by death and desertion 19,381; prisoners, 5336; and 4659 sick and wounded. The naval force for the above four years was, 83 men of war and armed vessels, whose compliments of men amounted to 22,337; out of which we have lost 4315, besides sick: Thus we see that America had been, at the commencement of the present year, the grave of no less that 23,695 seamen and soldiers, without reckoning the increase to the dead list during this year." Does anyone have knowledge of a Randolph COOK b.c. 1745-1750, who served in the Rev. War..??? He could have lived in either of the Carolinas, but most likely South Caroloina.. near Laurens Co. His given name could also be James, John or William with the middle name of Randolph..? Know this isn't much to go on, but would appreciate anything that might lead in the right direction. Thanks Susan
