Gwathmey says that a Jacob SMOCK had service in the 3rd and 4th VA Regiments and service in the 4th, 8th, and 12th VA Regiments. It can be shown that Jacob SMOCK, Sergeant, had service in the 8th VA, in the consolidated 4th/8th/12th VA Regiment. and in the 4th VA. (VF and Army Hist records. There is evidence that he served 2 years, 5 months, from 19 June 1777 to Nov 1779 (DAR) There is VA Military Warrant that was for three years service in VA Cont'l Line (#1022). There is seven months of unaccounted for service. It is in this unaccounted time that could be related to the 3rd VA service. Any adivice is welcomed Best, Hugh
Question: What was the legal age for women in Ohio in 1811? I'm working on a problem of the ages of two female children named in a will written in 1811 in Ohio which states they are to get inheritance upon marriage or reaching legal age. Best, Hugh
Elaine, I know he was from Augusta County Va. And settled in Fayette Co Ky after the war. I haven't found any bounty warrants or the like. There was a story that supposedly he was with Paine who was slapped by Washington at some point, at least that is the story. Other than the book "The House of Dunlap", I have no info on his service, which stated that he was at the surrender of Cornwallis. I'm beginning to believe that my line of Dunlap's hated paperwork and were ghosts! Hi, folks I've just learned learned that my ancestor, Joseph Levering (1748-1822) served in two units of the Philadelphia County (Pennsylvania) Militia during the Revolution -- first as a private in a Capt. Norney's command and, later, as a sergeant in a Capt. Alexander Colley's company. How do I find learn more about these units? I am more familiar with the Civil War military, in which a "company" was usually a subdivision of a regiment -- which was, in turn, a subdivision of a battalion or corps. Was that also the case during the Revolution? What I most want to determine is when the units were formed, where they were assigned and what battles they participated in. I already know that Joseph was captured at the Battle of the Brandywine. I appreciate your help. Mark

Hugh wants further information: <<John H. Gwathmey, gives Jacob SMOCK's service as private in the 3rd and 4th regiments Va. Continental Line and sergeant in the 4th, 8th and 12th regiments, Va. Continental Line>> Rosters for these regiments are in the National Archives' Micropublication 246, in 140 microfilm rolls. You can borrow particular microfilm rolls through your local library's inter-library loan program or through LDS stakes. I estimate from my own use that the rosters for the 3rd and 4th Regiments would be on rolls 94-97, and for the 12th VA on rolls 109-110, with possibly some on roll 111. You can find out for sure by contacting the National Archives -- most libraries do not have the detailed list of what is on each roll. LDS has their own microfilm numbers unrelated to the National Archives' lists; in their series the VA rosters begin with #830,371. Bear in mind that no matter how Gwathmey has the listings arranged, "same name" does not necessarily indicate "same person." Good hunting, Judy

NA03, SA05 http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/batldo.htm Mike, A couple of these Dunlap Patriots came from the area your William probably lived in. If so, his information will probably be in "The Western Military district" of Virginia", also called Botetourt prior to becoming Ky and Oh. Many folks from the district served with Col. Daniel Morgan's Frontier Rifles. The link above takes you to some information about this period of the Rev. War. If this lead doesn't pan out, let me know and I can send information about the Anderson Papers, much of which may or may not be in the Virginia State Library. George Patrick
The Historical Register of Virginians in the American Revolution, 1938, by John H. Gwathmey, gives Jacob SMOCK's service as private in the 3rd and 4th regiments Va. Continental Line and sergeant in the 4th, 8th and 12th regiments, Va. Continental Line. I have found Jacob SMOCK in the Valley Forge rolls as Jacob SMOCK, Sgt., 8th VA, Capt. Higgins' Co., thus verifying some of his service. Also there is evidence that he received a 200 acre Military Warrant (#1022) for 3 years service as a sergeant in the VA Continental Line. The history of the 8th VA shows that the Regiment was consolidated with the 4th and 12th VA upon leaving Valley Forge in June 1778 and merged into the 4th VA in Sep 1778. >From the above it is obvious that the Jacob's' service involved association with the 4th, 8th, and 12th VA. I have not been able to find evidence of service in the 3rd VA Regiment. Could this be an error? If not, where did Gwathmey get his information? Best, Hugh
I have a possible Rev. War ancestor that I have not found proof of service for as of yet. His name is William Dunlap (b abt 1744 d 1816 in Ky). According to info I have received, Wm Dunlap was supposedly a Major in the war. I contacted the D.A.R. and received a copy of an application. The problem with the application was it showed no proof of service. Since then D.A.R. has stopped accepting applications based on that line. The info I have on Wm. Dunlap is as follows: Born approx. 1743-44 and died in Fayette Co. Ky in 1816. He was married to Rebecca Robertson. I suspect that if in fact Wm. did serve it might have been in the militia. Does anyone have any info that would confirm he did serve and when and where? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Mike Dunlap
What rank were Chaplains if any? Did they receive any Pensions or land bounties? I have a John Dillahunty, of North Carolina mentioned as Chaplain Rev. War, in Early Disciples of Christ papers. He left NC 1790s to Davidson County Tenn where helped start a Baptist Church. gerald preas dallas tx
Phyllis, Check with your public library, and cite the ISBN below. If they don't have it (and they probably won't) they can borrow it for you on interlibrary loan from whoever has a copy. You can also buy it from Heritage Books in Maryland <http:// www.heritagebooks.com/mm5/merchant.mvc? Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HBI&Product_Code=C2479&Category_Code=> The author may sell copies directly, also. (This is NOT a commercial message!!!) Even if your guy is not mentioned, this book will give you a very good idea of the units comings, goings, and doings, at least through 1778. For anyone having any serious interest in the 3rd Virginia (two of my ancestors, Captain Nathaniel Ambler Ashby and Major Robert Powell both served in this unit) I found the Chilton's diaries indispensable. I used them to compile a 40 page monograph on Powell's life, primarily his war years. When I did the monograph, the diaries were only available in the original manuscripts from the Draper Collection of the Chicago Historic Society. Another book, now out of print, but for which many new and used copies are still floating around, is T. Triplett Russell and John K. Gott's Fauquier County in the Revolution (Warrenton, Virginia Publishing Co., 1977). Although ostensibly a history of the county's role in the American Revolution (it was written as a bicentennial local history project), it is for the most part a regimental history of the Third Virginia Continental Line. The value of this book is that it carries the history of the unit through to the end of the war. Unfortunately, your Jacob Smock does not appear in the index -- although that may have been an oversight. I am concerned about the 3rd VA Regiment during the Rev. War. Gwathmey states that Sergeant Jacob SMOCK had service with the 3rd and 4th VA Regiments. I can find Sgt. Jacob SMOCK in the 8th VA at Valley Forge (Dec 1777-June 1778). Since the 8th was merged into the 4th VA in Sep 1778, it is logical that Jacob SMOCK serve in the 4th VA. Sgt. Jacob SMOCK with 3 years service in the VA Continental Line received Military Warrant #1022 for 200 acres which he registered in 1783, but never surveyed or patented. He was killed by Indians at Crab Orchard, KY soon after 1784 (last tax year in Hampshire Co., VA) while returning to VA from KY. What I cannot find is any reference of his service with the 3rd VA as stated by Gwathmey. Any suggestions as to sources to be explored? Best regards, Hugh

Hi, List I've just been told that an ancestor -- Joseph Levering (1748-1822) of Philadelphia -- is listed in the DAR Patriot Index as a "sergeant" who served in the Revolution (presumably in a Pennsylvania unit). According to the person who passed this information along, the Patriot Index does not reference the particular unit or regiment. Can anyone tell me where to find this information? I am interested in learning what Levering did during the war. Thanks! Mark E. You can find a copy of a request for the money's from the service of Joseph Levering on Heritage Quest under Revolutionary War Pensions. Joseph Levering served 4 months as a Sgt. in Captain Alexander Calley's Co. of PA Militia. He was taken a prisoner of the British and there remained until he was traded. No dates or amount of time given for him being a prisoner. There is family data in the file.

They are from the DAR's Genealogical Records Committee National Index, which is online. These references are not related to the Patriot Index or to Revolutionary War service. The GRC reports, which this index provides access to, are typescript volumes containing Bible and cemetery records along with many other types of sources from many time periods. The DAR has been compiling them since the 1910s, and there are now over 18,000 of these volumes in our library. The index is a work-in-progress and new entries are added frequently as we receive new indexes from the volunteer members who are performing this valuable work. Also, that reference to "AK" is indeed to an Alaska volume, not an Arkansas one. We are careful to use the correct postal codes for entries in our index. The book in question was prepared by a member in Alaska but the contents of it are Chatham County, North Carolina court records from 1843. The book is shelved in our North Carolina section. This illustrates one of the main reasons for the indexing project -- materials on one state may appear in volumes compiled by DAR members from another state. In the near future we plan to have the index references linked to the cataloging record of the book, so researchers will be able to identify the exact volume referenced by the index. In the DAR Library's portion of the DAR website (www.dar.org) one finds the link to the GRC National Index on the left side. On the same page as the index search screen is a link to "GRC Index Overview," which explains what this index is. It also explains how to get copies of the pages referred to through our Search Service. The information and order form for the Search Service may be obtained by scrolling to the end of the "Overview" and clicking on the link. In the next few years we hope to scan the text of these volumes and link them to the online index in some way, but that is not imminent or completely planned out. Consequently, short of visiting our library in Washington, D.C., the only way to obtain copies is through our Search Service or by hiring a private researcher. The DAR Patriot Index is not available online. The latest printed version of the index is 2003, three red volumes. ALL EARLIER EDITIONS SHOULD BE THROWN AWAY!!! [not shouting; just emphasizing]. In lieu of an online version of the index, the DAR offers a free online Patriot Index look-up service. On our website, www.dar.org, click on the word "Membership" in the middle of the page. On the right side of the next page is "DAR Patriot Lookup Service." Volunteer members will check names and send a reply shortly after receipt. I have checked the 2003 version of the index and there are no Mhoon entries; they've probably been merged with Moon because of the similarities of pronunciation and spelling. I should add that the Patriot Index is not a listing of all participants on the American side during the Revolutionary War, just those whose descendants in the DAR have established them in our records. Absence from the Patriot Index does not necessarily mean, therefore, that a person was not a soldier, sailor, patriot, etc. The DAR is making major strides at the present time to make more information available to researchers through our webpage. I hope this information will help everyone understand what is and isn't available on it. More is on the way as our project develops over the next few years. Eric G.
