    1. [AMERICAN-INDIAN-MISSIONS] Native Americans Origins in Mountain Area of Siberia
    2. Aaron Hill
    3. Native Americans actually came from a tiny mountain region in Siberia, DNA research reveals -- Tiny region in central Russia has DNA link to native Americans today -- Ancestors thought to have walked across ice 13,000 years ago -- Altai is 'key place', because central location means ancient peoples passed through    Altai in southern Siberia sits right at the centre of Russia. But the tiny, mountainous republic has a claim to fame unknown until now - Native Americans can trace their origins to the remote region. The region lies at the intersection of what is now Russia, Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan. DNA research revealed that genetic markers linking people living in the Russian republic of Altai, southern Siberia, with indigenous populations in North America. A study of the mutations indicated a lineage shift between 13,000 and 14,000 years ago - when people are thought to have walked across the ice from Russia to America. 'Altai is a key area because it's a place where people have been coming and going for thousands and thousands of years,' said Dr Theodore Schurr, from the University of Pennsylvania in the US. Among the people who may have emerged from the Altai region are the predecessors of the first Native Americans. http://is.gd/xGwapX

    3.  Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that if any of you are interested, the following Rootsweb mailing lists are now officially up for adoption. As I really don't have the time that needs to be put into them, I am hoping a more devoted list mom or dad, will step forward. :) This is a "first come, first served" adoption, and if you request to adopt, and don't hear back from me immediately, please be patient.                                                                      Take care,                                                                         Diana                                                                       List mom AL-FREEDMEN AL-ORPHANS ALDALLAS AMERICAN-INDIAN-MISSIONS ANCHORS ANDERSONVILLE ANKER BOONE-DANIEL-KY CASHATT CONNACHER DAMATO DanvilleCrossing DanvilleQueries DAVIS-VA DOLLAR ETN-OZ FL-AfricaAmer FL-FREEDMEN FL-PAHOKEE FLCOLLIE FLHARDEE FLHERNAN FLMARTIN FLOSCEOL FLPALMBE FLUNION FRYER GA-ELBERT-CO GAWALTON HONEYMAN IA-FREEDMEN IABUTLER IACLARKE IACLAY IAFRANKL IAMONROE IATAYLOR IN-FREEDMEN IN-LAWRENCE-MTZionCemetery INBLACKF Justice-Marshall KS-FREEDMEN KSJEWELL KY-ADOPTIONS KY-AUBHISTSOC KY-FEUDS KY-FOLKLORE-GHOST-STORIES KY-FREEDMEN KY-INTERTRIBAL KY-LITTLE-SANDY KY-REGULATORS KY-SLAVES KY-STURGEON KYADAIR KYCARTER KYEDMONS KYLARUE KYLINCOL KYMORGAN-HISTORY LA-FREEDMEN LAACADIA LAASSUMP LAWEBSTE LONGLEY MARTINDALE MO-FREEDMEN MOWORTH MS-FREEDMEN MSAFRICANAMER MSCLAY MSKEMPER MSMONTGO MSRANKIN MSWINSTON NC-FREEDMEN NCCOLUMB NCSCOTS NJ-AFAM NJ-FREEDMEN NJ-ORPHANS NYFULTON OBERLIN OBERMAN OBRE OH-FREEDMEN OH-SLAVES OKCCGS ORDER-OF-ELKS ORDER-OF-THE-EASTERN-STAR PA-BUCKS-CEMETERIES PA-DEL-CEMETERIES PA-DEL-CHESTER PA-FOLKLORE PA-FREEDMEN PA-MEMORIES PA-MONTGOMERY-CEMETERIES PA-OLD-RAYSTOWN PA-PHILA-CEMETERIES PA-RIDLEY PA-ROLLCALL PA-SUSQUEHANNA PA-SW-OBITS PADATA PAMCKEESPORT ROBENHORST ROBIE ROBSON SC-DUTCHFORK SC-FREEDMEN SC-VETERANS SOOTER SOUTHERN-CHAT SOUTHERN-PLANTATIONS Southern-Trails SPARKES STAGGS STURGILL-EAST-KY TN-BLOUNT-OBITUARIES TN-FREEDMEN TUTT TX-BAPTIST TX-CATHOLIC TX-COTTON TX-EARLY-LEADERS TX-FREEDMEN TX-HISTORY TX-LUTHERAN TX-MEMORIES TX-MERCERCOL TX-METHODIST TX-OILGEN TX-REVOLUTION TX-SHARECROP TX-VETERANS TX-WOOD-CEM TX-WOODMEN TXBOSQUE TXCALDWE TXCALLAH TXCHAMBE TXCOCHRA TXCRANE TXCULBER TXDUVAL TXHARTLE TXHEMPHI TXHUNT-ARCHI VES TXHUNT -OBITS TXKENDAL TXKENEDY TXKENT TXKIMBLE TXMOORE VA-AfricanAmer VA-CHURCH-HILL VA-FREEDMEN VA-ROLLCALL VAAMELIA VACHARLE VACNORFO VADINWID VAGREENE VAISLEOF VALDRES VANANSEM VANOTTOW VANVOORHEES VAPOWHAT VAPRINCEG; WV-FREEDMEN WV-MetroValley WVPRESTO WVSUMMER

    1. From List Admin-Just in case
    2. Diana Boothe
    3. In case you didn't receive this personally, some updated news pertaining to RootsWeb......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.

Click to learn more. > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=4930&sourceid=1237 > Hi, The National Archives probably has some microfilm that would be of help to you in this research. You can get some info in a set of books called "Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs" by Howard E. Hill. You can get these thru the National Archives and Records Administration (they have a website online). Also, you want to check out their catalog : AMERICAN INDIANS - A Select Catalog of NARA MIcrofilm Publications. There is a good deal of information on microfilm at the NARA. They have letters to and from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Letters from school administrators and Govt. Agents for the various tribes etc. It just depends on the time frame and tribe as to what you'll find but can be really useful. There may be census and enrollment information as well. I can't say for that Mission School or location for sure, but sometimes the studenes were listed on Federal Census at the end of the County.......not too often but once in awhile and worth checking. I notice that between 1887 - 1891 there was a "Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions". I found that in Hill's book. It isn't clear to me if that Bureau is part of the Catholic Church or part of the govt.........but I would guess the Catholic Church for what that's worth. You could just try a search online for that Bureau and see what comes up. Another thing that might be helpful is to check the reference section at your local library. There is set of books about various Indian tribes and one of those books includes information about the different Indian Mission Schools. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the set of books. They are large like encyclopedias and mostly greyish with red on the binding....... I know that is piteful help but I don't have the name written down. I've seen them in several libraries though so hopefully you'll be able to find them. They are almost always in the reference section when they have them. You might also check history books for the state and area of Ft. Yates. If you find the name of the Catholic clergyman in charge of the school in your time frame, that might lead you to more info. Knowing the history of the area, Govt Agency for that tribe and anyone connected with the tribe can be most useful in doing this kind of research. Another place that might have detailed info on that school would be the State Historical Society for the state Ft. Yates was in and possibly the local Historical Society of the county it was in. Good luck, Karren A.

    1. St. Aloysious Mission School
    2. Hello, I am interested in the school above that was once on Ft. Yates at Standing Rock Indian Reservation. It was a boarding school that Indian children attended and closed in 1932. It was what they call a "government contract Catholic school." I have checked with Marquette University with no luck. Thanks.

    1. [AMERICAN-INDIAN-MISSIONS] useful article - perhaps
    2. I found this article on ebay today - for sale no less :-( . Thought it might be useful to some of you out there researching your family lines. If it helps anyone, I would love to hear back from you. I am not on all of the servers anymore, but think of all of you when I am researching. Sue >From the New York Herald, August 21, 1849 THE REMOVAL OF THE STOCKBRIDGE INDIANS – This tribe, a remnant of the Leni Lenape or Mohican confederacy, have sold their lands, lying on Fox river, Wisconsin and in their agreement with the government have the privilege of selecting two townships at any point west of the Mississippi. They number in all about three hundred, and are entirely civilized. They have advanced to a high standard as farmers and mechanics and are mostly well educated and devout professors of religion. A delegation composed of Austin E. Quincy, Jeremiah Slingerland, Elisha Konkapot, Joel Konkapot, Moses Charles and Thos. Snake being some of the principal men of the tribe, visited this region last week, upon a tour of observation. They were much pleased with the Sioux country, south of the St. Peter’s so far as they had an opportunity of examining – and in all probability will settle in some part of that district so soon as the governments come in possession of the lands. Mr. Slingerland is a minister of the gospel among them. We learned in conversation with him, that they desire, if they settle in this quarter to locate as near the Sioux as possible, in order that their progress in civilization and Christianity may have a beneficial influence upon that untutored tribe. –St. Paul’s (Mo.) Register, August 4 Transcribed by Sue Simonich, Dec. 2003 Original article found on Ebay for sale.

    2. Barbara, I read your post with interest. I have been stuck on finding genealogy information in Rome, Ny also. Our family has a Kenyon/Dean connection with according to "family stories" our gg grandmother was 1/2 Mohawk and a school teacher from Rome, Oneida Co. NY. Her name is Electa Dean married to a Kenyon. I have researched the fact Fort Stanwix is in Rome, where the Mohawk Treaty was signed. Our family is there at the right time period around 1780s-1830s. I have seen some suggestions from writings that the surname Dean is connected to the Mohawk Natives History. You search sounds very close to what I have been looking for, so I thought our family story might help with yours. I hope this might help you. I haven't any other information than this at this time. Best Wishes in your research, Sincerely, Barbara Long

    3. Hi BrightStar, I am seeking information about two women, a mother and her daughter I think: Maria Estelle Williams, born 1853, Rome, Oneida Co., NY who died 1923, Port Ewen, Ulster Co., NY. Emeline Williams, born 1815 and died 1881, place of birth unknown, but is buried beside Maria in Riverview Cemetery, Port Ewen, Ulster Co., NY. Note. On the tombstone, the name is only "Estelle Williams", so she probably used only that form of her name for most things. Maria Estelle Williams was my great-great-grandmother and was married to Lucius D. Smith, born Verona, Oneida, Co., NY. She is really a family mystery. I have a picture of her when she was just married (in Sabury or Sudbury, NY, December 1873, witnessed by a family named "Estey", S.J. Estey and "Miss Hallie Estey") standing beside her "Uncle Halliday" who appears to be mixed also and darker than she is. I suspect that there may have been some sort of dispute and break-up of her family, because she never spoke about them or visited them to my knowledge. The family story is that she came from "out West" at the time she met my great-grandfather. I very much suspect that both of them had mixed White-NA blood, but I am not sure of which tribe/s. They may have been mixed tribally, too. I know that Lucius D. Smith's family came from Massachusetts very early on and his father, Jacob B. Smith, appears more "non-White" than he does, so the mixture goes back at least till about 1826 when he was born - maybe farther. Could Maria and Lucius be Oneida, or maybe, considering that Lucius Smith's family came from MA, Stockbridge-Brothertown Indians? Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
