    3. I thought the members of this list might also like to see this post from the Germanna list--Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Blankenbaker" <johblank@pipeline.com> To: <GERMANNA_COLONIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 5:42 AM Subject: [GERMANNA] (1106)Germanna Colonies, History of John Amberger was a name on the list of Rev. War participants. He was the grandson of the 1717 immigrant, Hanns Conrad Amberger. Conrad came from Bönnigheim in Württemberg where he had been born to Johann Conrad Amberger and Anna Magdalena Lederer. Conrad (Jr.) is described as a vine dresser or a worker in a vineyard. In 1714 Conrad, Jr. married the widow of Hans Georg Rohleder (nee Anna Catharina Schuhnig). She was, at this time, the mother of a six year old daughter, Maria Magdalena. Two children born to Conrad, Jr. and Anna Catharina died at an early age. There is no record in Virginia for Anna Catharina or her daughter. Conrad was settled by Lt. Gov. Spotswood at New German Town where, among other activities, the colonists were encouraged to make wine. Conrad’s skills would have been very useful in this endeavor. Even though Spotswood sued Conrad for thirty pounds of money, he was awarded less than ten percent of that amount. Conrad did not move to the Robinson River Valley but lived southeast of Mt. Pony for a while where Christopher Zimmerman and Frederick Kabler also lived. Apparently a son, John, was born about the time of the move to the Mt. Pony land in 1725 or 1726. At this time, it seems that Conrad’s wife was Barbara. She was perhaps of English origin. About ten years later, Conrad moved to land in the Robinson River community though it was on the northeast periphery. In 1742, the widow Barbara was appointed the administrix of Conrad’s estate with Christopher Zimmerman as security. About this same time, Barbara was appointed by the Orange County Court to teach Anne Stuart the fine arts of reading, writing, and spinning. The only known male descendant of Conrad was John who first appears in the records as a witness of the will of James Gillison in 1759. He frequently appears in the land records after that date. He married Anne ___ in 1750. Their children include Anne, William (perhaps), and John, Jr. who was born in 1758 (from his Rev. War Pension Application). After the mother Anne died, John, Sr. was married to Margaret in 1769 when they owned land previously owned by Francis Lucas. About 1775, the family moved to North Carolina, to land now in Wilkes County. John, Jr., the grandson of the immigrant, filed for a pension (R174) for Revolutionary War service but he was denied the pension. He said that he had searched for Indians and Tories and was at the Battle of King’s Mountain. A more popular spelling of the name today is Amburgey. Much of the information here came from Dorothy Amburgey Griffith who is the premier historian of the family. P.S. Last May, during a visit to Bönnigheim, Eleanor and I dropped in to the church which was open for the organist to practice and the cleaning people. One other man was present and he wanted me to follow him. Communication was limited as he spoke no English and I little German. But we climbed the stairs in the tower to about the third floor and he proudly showed me his responsibility. It was the bell ringing mechanism which is an elaborate clock mechanism but separate from the clock. My guide took care of this rather elaborate mechanism and he oiled and adjusted it as needed (with Teutonic efficiency?). I have written to you before about the Amburgeys. You gave me some info then. Thank you. Sincerely, Linda Underwood Miller

    3. Was your Sally Poff married to John Walker Amburgey? If so, then I 'suspect' her surname was mis-read because the first known wife of John W. was definitely recorded in their marriage as "Huff", also--her parents are known, and she was born in VA. 2. Linda, Sally Huff (b 1841) married my great grandfather, John Walker Amburgey (1837-1893). Until today I was always told she was my great grandmother. However, what I am finding are reports that state she died in 1886 and my grandmother was born in 1891! I am of the Knott County Amburgey's. Mom told me that there were two branches of Amburgey's that came to this country from Germany. The first one of our clan to arrive was Hans Conrad Amburger and I believe he came here in 1717. Best of luck in your search! If you are interested, do you know of the Amburgey Family Reunion in Hindman, KY? It is the last weekend on July. Suzie -Q

Everything I am finding on Sally states she died in 1886. Hester was born in 1891. Does anyone have any information on this? Am I finding incorrect death dates, or did John Walker marry after Sally? I would appreciate ANY information. Suzie

We got four guys together with a four-wheeler a little over a month ago with the new stone strapped on the front, but the ditch which had to be crossed was too steep for the four-wheeler. It would have turned over! So we had to take the stone and the four-wheeler back home that day. On a second try, a week or so later, some of our guys helped get boards across the ditch and with another 4-wheeler, took the stone across the deep ditch and around the side of the hill. Apparently when that new house was built there (behind the Pentecostal Church) the original road to the cemetery was done away with. Now it is only accessible by foot, and of course it was too steep to carry a 240 pound granite stone. But we got it done! I know you are glad that Thomas F. Amburgey now has a new Confederate marker showing his service in the 5th Kentucky Infantry, and I hope you will be able to visit the cemetery in the future. At present I don't have a scanner, so I won't be able to get pictures to you. We set stones almost every day (this week two in Perry County and two in Laurel County) - and because most of our guys work - we usually have to throw something together the night before - in terms of planning when and where we are setting stones. Next week we will be working in Floyd, Breathitt and Magoffin County. As of today we have set 360 Confederate markers, have 41 on the ground ready to set, and another 62 on order. I have recently ordered a stone for Ambrose A. Amburgey in Knott County - and we are currently researching the burial site of Jesse Amburgey - both are on Main Carr. Write me anytime. We have found the grave of Private William G. Amburgey (1835-1921) - Huff Cemetery, near Norton, Virginia (Wise County) but we are waiting to order the stone after we have more exact dates from his pension and death certificate. Thanks again for your interest. We have a few 13th Ky. Cavalry men we believed were buried in Greenup County - so maybe you could help out with some of those in the future. Stay in touch. 1. [AMBURGEY-L] Thomas Francis Amburgey
    2. Joseph Amburgey
    3. Thomas Francis Amburgey, son of Ambrose Amburgey was born in 1825 and died in 1897. Known as Frances Amburgey during the Civil War while he served with the Confederate Army in the 5th KY Mtd. Infantry, he was discharged and thus survived the great conflict. His discharge gives a description of him as 6' 1 & 1/2 '', fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. I was curious if anyone out there has a photograph of him. You would think that with passing away in 1897, someone would have taken a photo of him that a descendant would possess for positive identification. But, to no avail, my search has been fruitless. Anyone that can help, let me know. Joseph Amburgey jamburg@zoomnet.net http://www.batteryL.org/genealogy.html

    2. Terry, I am also searching for Amburgey in Letcher County. Elizabeth Amburgey married Benjamin Everidge in 1855 in Letcher County. Her parents were Ambrose Amburgey and Rebecca Francis. I also have Collins in Letcher Co Robert Collins married Anna Banks prior to 1828. The only known child, a son Eli was born about 1828. Eli married Mary (Polly) Barrett in 1848, Their son Jasper Babe Collins married Nancy Collins (a cousin). Does any of this sound familiar?
