Lebanon Daily News August 16, 1985 TWO KILLED IN ROUTE 72 CRASH Two people died early today in a one car crash on Route 72 just south of Bunker Hill, along a section of winding roadway that has been the scene of numerous accidents in the past few years. The driver, Elizabeth Ann Hinks, 19, of 2085 Weavertown Road, Lebanon, was taken to Lebanon Valley General Hospital and pronounced dead there at 3:51 a.m. by Dr. Hugh Knight. Hinks, a daughter of Joseph T. and Mary Bunch Hinks, was a 1984 graduate of Cedar Cress High School. The other victim, a man in his 20s, remained unidentified late this morning. he was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Robert Kline, county coroner. Another passenger, Theresa Mann, 18, of Lancaster Avenue, Mt. Gretna, was taken to Lebanon Valley General Hospital in Lebanon's Independent Ambulance and is listed in stable condition. A hospital spokeswoman said Mann is in the intensive care unit, undergoing treatment for neck injuries. The car, a small, two door model, was demolished, police said. According to police, the car was southbound on Route 72 at a high rate of speed in the 40 mph zone shortly after 2 a.m. when it crossed into the left lane and struck guard rails on the east side of the highway, then veered back across the road to the west side. There it struck a curbing and became airborne, slamming into several trees on property owned by Mark Zehring, 2001 RT. 72 North, and flipping onto its side. Police said neither the driver nor the passengers wore seat belts. Hinks was thrown from the car and pinned beneath it, they said. Rescue operations were performed by members of the Jonestown and Bunker Hill fire companies, including the Jonestown Rescue Unit. Also at the scene were the Independent and First Aid Ambulance and the First Aid and Safety Patrol Ambulance, both of Lebanon; and Medic Unit 10 from Palmyra. It took approximately half an hour to free Hinks, according to police. Rescue teams also had to free the unidentified man from the wreckage. Police said he was caught "partly in and partly out of the car." Mann, they said, was the only one of the three who was clear of the wreckage "and could be helped immediately". Police said the man could not be identified quickly because he carried no wallet or identity cards. No witnesses to the crash, if there were any, had contacted police by mid-morning, officers said. State police are asking anyone with information to call the barracks at 272-3925. They said the severity of impact and the car's careening pattern that took it across the roadway twice were evidence of the "high rate of speed" that was a part of their official statement. And, they added, there is "definite evidence that this crash is alcohol related." Police acknowledge the area has been the scene of "quite a few" accidents, and noted the deep curve of the roadway sometimes has been a contributing factor. An officer talking about the crash this morning said, however, it is a far less frequent site than the Route 72 Thompson Avenue intersection just a short distance away. "We have tons of them up there," the officer said.
