I am also trying to set up the surname website for alwine, allwine, and allwein. Do any of you have a family tree that I can get started with on the allwein side. I see a lot of information coming over the list, but since I do not have a base to work from it is difficult to tie it together. If it could be mail, email, or faxed I would appreciate it. Thanks. Steve Allwine steve@allwine.net >> Welcome to the list, Steve! Since you just subscribed last week, you may not have had a chance to read the archived messages for this list, which has been operating since Fall. If you take a moment to do that, it will probably help get you up to speed with the rest of the group. An ALWINE/ALLWEIN/ALWIN/ALLWINE web site was started at Rootsweb early this year, as a companion to this mailing list. I am not opposed to you starting your own, but the rest of us have already begun contributing to the site currently online. I would hate to see a duplication of effort, and we'd be more than happy to have you contribute to the existing site, particularly if you get a comprehensive Alwine/Allwein/Alwin/Alwin Family Tree together in HTML before the rest of us. That is my project for the site for this summer, when I finish a previous committment to which I am obligated. You should know that one of our listmembers, Thomas Stobie, already has a very good start on this on his own website. Thomas has exchanged Gedcoms with several of us over the past few years, which has made his database quite comprehensive. There is a link to Thomas' web site on the ALWINE site, or I'm sure he'd be happy to re-post it here. I think one of the first things you should do before getting us all to send you our Gedcoms is work on finding your direct connection to our family. There are Allwines of British background that have no relation to the members of this list, who are all descendants of a German immigrant, Hans Jacob Allwein. That in no way means that they are not welcome to use this list for discussion of their surname, as it was designed for all variants of the ALWINE name. It just means that we currently don't have any of the British Allwines on our list, and it would be useless for the listmembers currently subscribed to send you their Gedcoms. If you could post some of your ancestry to the list, we could probably find your connection or a possible connection fairly quickly if you are a descendant of Hans Jacob Allwein. Some of us have been at this for quite a while, and our knowledge of the various branches of Hans Jacob's family is starting to come together nicely. Again, welcome to the list. You can find the ALWINE list archives by following links from the Rootsweb main page for mailing list searches, or on the ALWINE surname web site. The URL is listed below.
