Arnold Jr. Lebanon native George Edward Arnold Jr., 67, formerly of 151 Vehorn Road, Fairview, N.C., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the Asheville, N.C., VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Doris Moody Arnold and the late Jo Corinna Arnold. Born May 28, 1933, he was a son of the late George E. and Caroline Gordon Arnold. He served one tour with the Marine Corps before enlisting in the Air Force in 1956. He was named Airman of the Year in 1963 and retired in 1977 as a master sergeant. He taught ROTC at Enka High School from 1979 until 1984 and then taught for one year at T.C. Roberson. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Asheville, N.C., where he was president of the Men's Club, a member of Praying Hearts, a eucharist minister and a lector. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Candace M. Wentzel of Lebanon, Kristie Frizsell of Swannanoa, N.C., and Diana Merritt of Merritt Island, Fla.; a son, Gregory Arnold of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, William Arnold of Lebanon; sisters Joanne Eiceman and Louise Groy, both of Lebanon, and Caroline Brandt of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; four stepchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday at his church. Interment was in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team.
