    1. [ALWINE] St. Peter's Church, Elizabethtown, PA
    2. Dear Cousins, I am passing on the following information which was posted to a mailing list I am subscribed to for people researching Catholic families of PA. I checked with the original poster, Joanne Marino, first of all to obtain her permission to copy and re-post her message, and second to see if our known Allweins of St. Peter's were on her list of early/founding families. (Still keeping my eyes peeled for your ancestors, Dorothy!) Here is Joanne's original message: In a message dated 3/7/00 9:13:36 AM Mountain Standard Time, catholicpa@egroups.com writes: << Date: Sun, 05 Mar 2000 12:26:39 -0800 From: "Joanne Marino" <raymari@prodigy.net> X-Mailing-List: catholicpa@egroups.com Subject: [catholicpa] St. Peters Church, Elizabethtown MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit For any who's lines were part of the founding families of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, PA, I would like to announce a reunion of sorts on May 27, 2000. Some of the surnames are ECKENRODE, EAGLE, EBBECKE, GROSS, FELIX, MYERS, MACKEY, BOLL and of course quite a few more. Email me if interested. raymari@prodigy.net >> Joanne quickly responded to my e-mail with the following response: In a message dated 3/8/00 4:35:25 PM Mountain Standard Time, raymari@prodigy.net writes: << Yes, please post this to the Alwine list! In fact, the Allwine's are mentioned some of the data I have. It really is for the early families, not just "founding" (I probably should not have used that word) families. By the way, Conrad Gross, of my line, married Julianna Eckenrode, who is the sister of your Maria! The point of this "reunion" is that the families all intermarried, and I think if we all bring our information, we can really help connect the lines. I tried for years to find the parents of Andrew and Conrad Gross and it was a Felix (related by a marriage) researcher who was able to tell me who he was and where he was buried - both times!! (another story). I do hope that you, and anyone else connected, can make it. Please have them e-mail me at raymari@prodigy.net and I will add them to my list. Thanks, Joanne Marino >> Dorothy, you will note that you and Joanne appear to be ECKENROTH/ECKENRODE cousins, and she may be able to share more information with you regarding your ancestor, Maria Magdalena Eckenroth. In any event, if any of you would like more information on this reunion at St. Peter's, please feel free to contact Joanne Marino directly, raymari@prodigy.net Christine Alwine Paige carfpaige@aol.com ALWINE-L List Manager

    3. Bev - in answer to your question: yes this other cemetary is in addition to the Kimmerlings UCC cemetary. I will have to check out the information about the Kimmerlings UCC cemetary being the oldest CATHOLIC cemetary - I think maybe there was a misunderstanding about the two cemetaries. Not many people have access or know where the smaller CATHOLIC cemetary is - so maybe when people say "the cemetary is in Kimmerlings" they assume it is the UCC cemetary. I'll keep you informed! 2. Dear Family, I have spent the last two days (and the better part of the nights, too) scanning in some photos, rewriting HTML code, etc. in an effort to improve the ALWINE web site. Please re-visit the link below to check out the additions, including: -Photos from St. Mary's Cemetery and Kimmerlings Church -A new link to ancestral photos, with photos of some of my Alwines to start us off -New links on my main page I still have lots more work to do to make this site really useful, but I thought you all might enjoy the old photos. Here's the link and the URL: <A HREF="http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genmom/">Chris' Genealogy Corner</A> http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genmom/ I probably won't post to this list every time I update the web site, so be sure to bookmark it and check in once in a while. I'm working on a page of military service links, more photos, and my gedcom. (I'm not rushing my gedcom work, since Thomas Stobie has such a thorough one on the Rootsweb site, and the ALWINE pages have a link to it.) Here is the address: www.luther95.net/AICG-HPA/. > Cheryl > > > HotBot - Search smarter. > http://www.hotbot.com > Re: Goshenhoppen Churches Dear Cheryl and Cousins, There isn't a place called Goshenhoppen anymore. In a way that's too bad because it is such a powerful word. One theory is that its origins are in the name "Shakahoppa," a Lanape Indian chief who governed the Perkiomen Creek area in the 1600s. In the 1700s there were several places with the name Goshenhoppen all up and down the Perkiomen Valley, which runs roughly from Hereford Township in Berks County south to Upper Providence Township in Montgomery County. The entire area was referred to as Goshenhoppen at one time. The earliest reference to the name Goshenhoppen was reported by William J. Hinke who found a petition to the governor of Pennsylvania dated May 10, 1728 which requested protection against a threatened Indian attack. Hinke identified Goshenhoppen (spelled 'Coshahopin') "as a region about ten miles long and five miles wide, which extends along the Perkiomen Creek, in the upper end of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and covers also small strips of land in the adjacent counties of Berks, Lehigh and Bucks.'" [quoted by Charles Glatfelter, PASTORS AND PEOPLE, The Pennsylvania German Society, 1980, volume 1, p. 373] In the early 1700s these were the "back woods" so to speak and literally on the frontiers of European settlement. I looked "Goshenhoppen" up in the United States Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System [http://mapping.usgs.gov] and could find only a Goshenhoppen Creek in Montgomery County, running due west of the town of Spring Mount in the direction of Pottstown. As a "place name" its use has clearly faded from existence. Also, the present-day town of Bally in Washington Township of Berks County was the location of another reference to Goshenhoppen. There was a Roman Catholic mission there, established by the Reverend Theodore Schneider, S.J., who came from Germany in 1741. According to Jerome Allwein's 1902 GENEALOGY OF THE ALLWEIN-ARNOLD FAMILIES "the first authentic record of the Allwein family" is found in the marriage register at Goshenhoppen where is recorded the marriage of Conrad Allwein and Catharine Weibel on May 16, 1773. They were married at Christian Henrich's house at Sharp mountain near Goshenhoppen. The Weibel family, it is noted, "was among the first of the old Catholic families who settled at Goshenhoppen" (p. 4). The Catholic mission at Bally later became known as St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church and eventually was renamed Most Blessed Sacrament Church, as Thomas Stobie's message (02/23) confirms. The massive reference work CATHOLIC TRAILS WEST (vol. 2) by Edmund Adams and Barbara Brady O'Keefe (Gateway Press, Baltimore MD) also connects several Allwein families to Goshenhoppen and other early Catholic congregations. They list "Hans Jacob and Katrina Allwein" as one of the founding Catholic families of Goshenhoppen, however, the information listed seems to come from a 1768 Bern Township, Berks County Tax Return. They also list Conrad and Catharine (Weibel) Allwein as founding families of Goshenhoppen. There was obviously some connection Hans Jacob and Catharina had to the Catholic congregation in Goshenhoppen, but it is not yet clear to me what the nature of that connection was. Jerome Allwein's genealogy provides a lot of information about the religious faith of Conrad and Catharine Allwein, but nothing about Hans Jacob and Catharina. There are several possibilities that need to be considered in establishing the religious affiliations of the progenitors of the Allwein family in Pennsylvania. There were also Lutheran and Reformed congregations in places called Goshenhoppen. As early as 1727 there was a Reformed congregation formed in New Goshenhoppen in Upper Hanover Township in Mongomery County. Lutheran activity came later and a congregation was founded in 1738. The New Goshenhoppen church was a union church until about 1750, when the Lutherans built their own church a few miles to the south. At about the same time in Old Goshenhoppen in Upper and Lower Salford Townships of Montgomery County, Lutheran and Reformed congregations were formed, and the two congregations built their first church in 1746 and continued sharing the church well into the 20th century. This was the longest lasting union church in the U.S. [see Charles Glatfelter, PASTORS AND PEOPLE, vol. 1, 1980, pp. 373-378]. The Old Goshenhoppen Church lasted until 1988 when, after 259 years, the Union church voted to dissolve the joint relationship of the Reformed and Lutheran congregations. The Lutheran congregation that remains refers to itself as the Advent Lutheran Church of Goschenhoppen (note the difference in spelling) [see http://www.luther95.net/ALCG-HPA/history.html]. It is located in Lower Salford Township and has a Harleysville PA address. This is the church you refer to in your earlier message. It is a fascinating discovery. We do not know whether Hans Jacob and Catharina Allwein visited any of these churches. We know that they had their son John baptised at St. John's Reformed Church in Heidelberg Township in Berks County in 1748, which is very near Bern Township, where Hans Jacob and Catharina presumably lived, in the northwest end of the county. It certainly is not out of the question that they might have visited other Protestant churches as well. We know, for example, that they were both christened March, 1749 at White Oak Brethren Church, Lancaster County [see Michael W. Lau, ALWINE FAMILIES OF YORK COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA AND SURROUNDING AREAS, Adams County Historical Society, Gettysberg PA, August, 1999]. I hope this helps. There are pictures of the two older churches under their history section. If anyone has been to this church you could let me know if this is the same church mentioned for Hans Jacob. 3. Patti, So are you saying that in addition to Kimmerlings cemetery that is there now, there is another small private cemetery on someones property? I was out at Kimmerlings looking at the old cemeteries trying to find Johannes Arnold's grave, he died in 1803.This all fits into my Allwein/Arnold line. I didn't find it, but I heard Kimmerlings was the old Catholic cemetery from the Lebanon Historical society. On the Lebanon County map of cemeteries that you can buy from the Lebanon Historical Society I only see Kimmerlings cemetery where the church is. They list private property cemeteries on here aso.Keep us updated,Thanks.. Bev Kimmerlings United Church of Christ 1 st Jacob's drive Lebanon,Pa 17046 717/272-7044 pastor's house 717/273-8926

    2. Hi Christine, I've really enjoyed reading all about the Alwine family, but find myself not having the time to really get into it. Please unsubscribe me at this time, but thanks to everyone for bringing the clan together. Sincerely, Eileen George
