MARIE ALLWEIN Drops From Porch At Summer Home In Mt. Gretna ON SATURDAY Victim Lands On Rock, Crushing Her Skull Many citizens throughout the community were immeasurably shocked on Saturday when they learned that MRs. Marie E. (Ross) Allwein; of 403 Chestnut street was almost instantly killed in a fall from a high porch at her summer home in the Chautauqua Borough Reservation, at Mt. Gretna. The cottage is located on a heavy slope, facing Brown Avenue, the near part being set on high piers. Mrs. Allwein had spent a part of the morning visiting across the street with Mrs. Maria T. Klopp, wife of City Councilman L.. M. Klopp, treasurer and general manager of the Lebanon Hardware Company. Mrs. Allwein returned to her own cottage about 11 o'clock, and shortly thereafter neighbors heard a thud and clatter of falling wood. Ladies at the D. O. Bomberger cottage on the same side of the street voiced an alarm to Mrs. Kloop who then ran to the Allwein home and found Mrs. Allwein lying on the ground at the foot of the porch. When the neighbor saw the crushed head of the victim she fainted. She recovered consciousness quickly, however, and noting that Mrs. Allwein was still breathing called to the Bomberger home again, with instruction to summon an ambulance. The Good Samaritan Hospital ambulance responded, but in the interim Dr. P. H. Gerheardt, and Dr. Mary Scott, an x-ray specialist of the Lancaster Hospital, both residing at Gretna arrived on the scene, and pronounced the woman dead. When the ambulance arrived, the interne in charge corroborated the verdict of the other two, and Dr. W. H. Brubaker, the county coroner was summoned. His investigation indicated that Mrs. Allwein had apparently started to shake a rug over the porch railing when it suddenly gave way under her weight and collapsed. She had toppled head first over the edge with the natural wood material of which the railing was constructed, and landed on a heavy rock. The skull was reported by the coroner as badly fractured. The victim of the tragedy was the widow of Arthur Allwein who died suddenly on April 29, 1940, while employed in the capacity of yardmaster of the Reading Company railroad yards in this city. He was a veteran in the employ of the corporation. Mrs. Allwein is said by friends to have never recovered from the shock of this bereavement. The decent was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical Church and Sunday School. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends at Mt. Gretna and in the city and the tragedy in which she lost her life brought sorrow to a considerable part of the communities in which she lived. Mrs. Allwein was a daughter of the late Herman Ross, of this city. She leaves a sister Mrs. Harry H. Flowers, of Lebanon, and a brother Arthur Ross, of Stouchburg, Berks County. 3. Isaac M. Allwein, Lebanon, Pennsylvania (1842 - 1918) Issac M. Allwein, son of William and Mary (Mairs) Allwein, was born May 7, 1842 and died February 21, 1918 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. William was the son of Philip and Barbara (Franz) Allwein. The line of descent connecting Isaac Alwine to Hans Jacob and Catharina Allwein is as follows: Generation 1: Hans Jacob and Catharina Allwein -- Berks County, Pa Generation 2: Conrad and Catherine (Weibel) Allwein -- Lebanon County, Pa Generation 3: Philip and Barbara (Franz) Allwein -- Lebanon County, Pa Generation 4: William and Mary (Mairs) Allwein -- Lebanon County, Pa William Allwein (b. June 30, 1813, d. October 18, 1888) was married to Mary Mairs (b. March 22, 1814, d. March 5, 1901) about 1835, and they had eleven children. Isaac was the fourth born (see Endnote 1): Henry M. (b. September 25, 1836, d. July 18, 1894) Ann Maria (b. November 19, 1837, d. September 18, 1874) Frank M. (b. March 1, 1840, d. unknown) Isaac M. (b. May 7, 1843, d. February 21, 1918) William (b. March 11, 1844, d. December 21, 1846) Amelia (b. June 27, 1846, d. January 4, 1929) Nathaniel M. (b. January 1, 1848, d. unknown) John M. (b. December 5, 1850, d. unknown) Mary "Polly" (b. January 11, 1853, d. unknown) Aaron M. (b. April 24, 1855, d. July 17, 1916) Jerome (b. December 8, 1859, d. September 2, 1862) Isaac Allwein grew up on his father's farm in North Lebanon Township and was educated in the public schools (see Endnote 2). He and his five brothers -- Henry, Frank, Nathaniel, John and Aaron -- were all teachers at one time or another in the public schools of Lebanon and adjacent counties. Isaac began teaching while still in his teens and completed 19 terms altogether. He also served with the Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. He first served for a six-week term with Company F of the 48th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia of 1863, from July 2 to August 26, 1863. Then in February 26, 1864 he enlisted for a 3-year term with the 93rd regiment, which was recruited from Lebanon (see Endnote 3). Among other things, his regiment participated in the Battle of the Wilderness in May 5-6, 1864. He was discharged June 27, 1865 after the defense of Washington, D.C. After the war, Isaac Allwein returned to Lebanon and to teaching in the public schools. He married Fianna "Anna" B. Gerhart on November 14, 1867 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lebanon, the ceremony being performed by the Reverend Father Boetzkis. There were eight children born to this union: Harry P. Allwein (b. Nov 19, 1868), Ella Mary (b. January 15, 1870), Katherine S. (b. August 5, 1871), William H. (b. May 23, 1873), John F. (b. July 20, 1875), Nora Agnes (b. April 22, 1879), Anna Mary (b. Sept 30, 1880), and Clarence Philip (b. October 9, 1888) (see Endnote 4). Ella Mary married Harry Zweier and Katherine married a Becker. Following his many years of public school teaching, Isaac Allwein later operated a grocery store and pursued the trade of plastering in Lebanon. He first filed for pension support in February of 1880 at the age of 37, claiming to suffer from chronic rheumatism originating during his war service. Lacking evidence that the condition was in fact stimulated by his war experience, the original application was denied. After a decade of bringing further evidence to bear on his claim, his declaration was finally accepted and he began receiving support on July 23, 1890 at the age of 48. This support continued until his death in 1918. Fianna died in 1910. They are buried side by side in the old St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Endnotes 1. Information on children born to William and Mary (Mairs) Allwein is reported in Jerome Allwein's (1902) Genealogy of the Allwein-Arnold Families (pp. 28-29). Although that source gives Mary's maiden name as "Mairs," the inscription on her tombstone reads "Mary Mars." I do not know which is correct. 2. In addition to pension records, the source of this biographical information is Jerome Allwein's (1902) Genealogy of the Allwein-Arnold Families, pp. 65-67 (see e.g. the material quoted from this source by Nancy Nebiker, Rootsweb, March 14, 2000). 3. The 93rd regiment originated in Lebanon September 12, 1861 and its men served valiantly during the early years of the war. In early February, 1864 a large portion of the regiment returned home to Lebanon on a veteran furlough. The entire community celebrated their courage and endurance, and it was after these festivities that Isaac enlisted (see Samuel Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-65, Volume 5, pp. 284-93). 4. This information was reported April 5, 1889 and again March 30, 1915 by Isaac Allwein to the Bureau of Pensions. The main discrepancy between the two sets of reports was the day of November in which Harry P. was born, inasmuch as the later report states it was November 21. Jerome Allwein's (1902) Genealogy of the Allwein-Arnold Families lists the name Henry P. for Harry P. The dates of birth given here for Isaac and Fianna's children agree with those reported in the Genealogy, except the latter gives 1886 as Clarence's birthyear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Duane F. 1. [ALWINE] Jacob Alwine
    2. Duane Alwin
    3. Jacob Alwine, Elkhart County, Indiana (1837 - 1920) Jacob Alwine was born August 11, 1837 at Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and died January 9, 1920 in Clinton Township, Elkhart County, Indiana (see Endnote 1). The names of his mother and father are not recorded on his death certificate, but it is known that he was the son of Jacob (b. about 1800) and Catherine (nee Blough) Alwine. Catherine was the daughter of Jacob (b. 1775) and Catherine (Saylor) Blough of Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Jacob (the senior) was one of the children of Philip Alwine (b. 1773) and Sarah Mueller, who settled in Conemaugh Township in Somerset County in the early 1800s. The line of descent connecting Jacob Alwine to Hans Jacob and Catharina Allwein is as follows: Generation 1: Hans Jacob and Catharina Allwein -- Berks County, Pa Generation 2: John and Eva (Christian)Allwein -- Berks County, Pa Generation 3: Philip and Sarah (Mueller) Alwine -- Somerset County, Pa Generation 4: Jacob and Catharine (Blough) Alwine -- Cambria County, Pa Catherine, wife of Jacob (the senior) Alwine, had four children: Abraham (b. September 10, 1829, d. May 3, 1899) John (b. April 11, 1832, d. July 18, 1904) Jacob (b. August 11, 1837, d. January 9, 1920) Samuel (b. 1843, d. unknown) After the death of Catherine, Jacob (the senior) married her sister, Fannie (Blough) Hershberger, widow of Benjamin Hershberger (see Endnote 2). The younger Jacob moved at some point early in his adult life from Cambria County, Pennsylvania to Indiana. He moved first to the town of LaGrange in LaGrange County, then in the spring of 1856 he moved to Clinton Township in Elkhart County, Indiana, where he lived near Goshen with John Alwine, his uncle. It was from Goshen, Indiana that he enlisted August 22, 1862 with Company D of the 100th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers. Later he was transferred to Company K and served with that unit until his discharge on June 14, 1865 about 5 weeks after the War's end. His regiment joined Sherman's devastating "March to the Sea" in August to December, 1864. After the war Jacob Alwine returned to Elkhart County and married Mary "Polly" (Lehman) Decker. The marriage license was issued by the state of Indiana on June 29, 1866. The marriage ceremony was conducted by Moses W. Hess, minister of the German Brethren Church, on July l, 1866. Polly Lehman was born April 4, 1835 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Samuel Decker October 6, 1859 -- he died August 28, 1862. According to Jacob Alwine, "Polly Alwine was never married except to said Decker and myself" (correspondence with the Pension Office dated May 6, 1915). There were four children born to Jacob and Polly Alwine: Henrietta "Hattie" (b. April 17, 1867), Lewis (b. June 13, 1869), Angeline "Angie" (b. March 27, 1871), and Anna (b. February 27, 1873) (see Endnote 3). Jacob first filed for pension support on January 10, 1887 at about age 50. He began receiving pension support soon thereafter, and after his death his wife Polly made a declaration for widow's pension, which she earned until her death on August 20, 1924. Endnotes 1. This information comes from U.S. government pension records. As is typical in such records there is a variety of birth dates given, even though they are in most cases self-reports. The death certificate from the Indiana State Board of Health reports that he was age 82 at the time of death, which would place the year of birth at 1837. In his original January 6, 1887 application for pension support as a Civil War veteran, he states he is 49 years of age, which would also produce a date of birth of 1837. And, in requests for increasing his pension filed May 17, 1912 and July 31, 1914, he states that he was born August 11, 1837. However, in a family data circular submitted by him on May 6, 1915, the date August 11, 1842 is given. In another request for increasing his pension filed on May 30, 1916, he states that he was born August 11, 1841. Finally, in a statement filed with the Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Pensions on August 9, 1916, he states that the date of his birth was August, 1839. This conforms with his military records which indicate that he was 23 when he enlisted, which would put the year at 1839. In a memorandum from the Commissioner of the Bureau of Pensions dated (oddly enough) August 11, 1916, the Department of the Interior accepted "August 11, 1839, as the date of soldier's birth." Still, I use 1837. 2. The source of this information is the History of Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania with Genealogical and Personal History, edited by William H. Koontz, Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, 1906. Except for that of Jacob, the dates of birth given for these children come from John F. Alwine's Descendants of Hans Jacob Allwein (Buxton, NC). 3. This information on Jacob and Polly's children comes from information supplied by Jacob to the Bureau of Pensions in 1898 and again in 1915. The more recent report gives Anna's birth as February 22, 1875. The more recent report indicates that Henrietta's married name was Gephart, Angeline's married name was Whitehead, and Anna's married name was Ellinger. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Duane F. 1. [ALWINE] Allwein Family History
    2. Duane Alwin
    3. Dear Cousins, Over the past year I have been spending a large chunk of my time doing research on the Allwein family and have produced several documents that may be of interest to you. I have sent copies of some of this material to a few of you, but I believe there may be a broader audience interested in what I have been doing. I have tried to send some of the shorter articles to the ALWINE Rootsweb group via e-mail, but they never seem to get through. So I am trying another approach. If you are interested please let me know if you would like to receive any of the following. All I ask is to be compensated for copying and postage costs (which I list after each item below). 1. D.F. Alwin, "Hans Jacob Allwein (1719-1781): Immigrant to Pennsylvania." 24 pages. $3.00 2. D.F. Alwin, "The Religious Roots of Familie Allwein." 30 pages. $3.00 3. D.F. Alwin, "On Sacred Ground: Exploring Goshenhoppen Churches." 12 pages. $2.00 4. D.F. Alwin, "Sylvester Conrad Alwine (1845-1923): Washington County, Kansas." 8 pages. $2.00 5. D.F. Alwin, "Lawrence Allwine (1756-1833)." 20 pages. $3.00 If you would like to have any four or all five items, I can send them to you for just $10.00. If you are interested, please do not "reply to all" but send your mailing address to me at dfa@umich.edu. I could send them as e-mail attachments, but I prefer not to do it that way. Thanks in advance for your interest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Duane F.
