He was born May 15, 1897 in Pueblo, Colorado to Edward Hausknecht and Elise Alwine Krauer, the second of their four children. His family moved to Murray, Utah in 1902, where his father was the first, and chief, assayer at the Murray Smelter. Howard attended Arlington Elementary through grade eight and then attended Granite High, 1913-17. He was an outstanding athlete, playing on the basketball and baseball teams all four years there. Served in the U. S. Army 1917-1918 during World War I. In 1920-21 he attended Michigan State Automotive School, then returning to Murray to set up his own automotive repair shop. In 1922, the Murray School Superintendent C. E. Gaufin, asked Howard to "give high school teaching a try." He did, and for the next forty years, taught auto mechanics and machine shop techniques, becoming an extremely effective and outstanding teacher in both the Murray and Jordan School Districts. At Murray High School, he also served as a volunteer assistant basketball and baseball coach. From 1940 to 1962 he taught machine shop, welding and auto mechanics, as well as maintaining and directing school transportation at Bingham High School, from where he also retired. He recalled with pride that he taught as many as 60 students at the same time and attributed his success to good organization, where he appointed the students themselves as shop foreman, foreman, tool room foreman and janitors. He also stressed cleanliness, strict discipline, fairness, and practical knowledge of his subjects. In his classes, if machine shop equipment was broken, he or a student made the repairs, and never expected someone else to do "his job." He claimed "he could count on one hand" the number of hand tools that were lost or stolen from his Bingham High shop during the 22 years he taught there. Howard married Ruby Townsend, Murray, Utah on August 5, 1925. She died July 24, 1984. Since her death, he has maintained "her yard and flower gardens" as she left them, and seasonally picked bouquets of flowers to her memory. He is survived by his sons, Howard T. and wife, Betty Jean, Cottonwood in Salt Lake County; Stephen E. and wife, Lucy, Holladay, Utah; daughter, Jeanne and husband, Charles Engberson, Alpine, Utah; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; also, his brother, Edwin (Bebs), Oakland, California; sister, Elsie H. Petersen, West Valley City, Utah. Funeral services Monday, October 25, 1993, at 1 p.m. in the Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Midvale. Family will greet friends at the mortuary Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to services. Interment, Murray City Cemetery. 3. Hi Cheryl, These are the children I have for Edward J. and Elizabeth M. (Spangler) Alwine: 1. Marian Louisa, b. Spt. 4, 1868, d. Oct. 23, 1904, m. Francis Selak July 25, 1888. 2. Nettie, b. 1869, no further information 3. Mary Louise, b. June 4, 1870, d. Aug. 23, 1904, m. Henry Joseph Selak June 16, 1888. 4. William Francis, b. Aug. 15, 1872, no further information 5. Peter Bernard, b. Jan. 20, 1874, m. Ada N. Krape, more information is available 6. Victoria Sarah Jane, b. Feb. 9, 1876, m. Thomas E. Kaufman April 2, 1894, no further information 7. Anastasia F. (Annie), b. May 12, 1878, m. Thomas Metzel, no further information 8. Charles David, b. Oct 7, 1880, m. Alverta M Haverstock Dec. 24, 1903, more information available 9. Henry Vincent (Harry), b. March 2, 1884, m. Mabel E. Strine Aug. 11, 1911, more information available Again, almost all of my information for the York/Adams County Alwines is from Michael Lau's ALWINE FAMILIES OF YORK COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA AND SURROUNDING AREAS. In addition to family lineage information on a large number of Alwine families, it also has lists of Alwine Marriages Recorded at the Register of Wills, York County PA. There are about 55 entries from 1885 through 1946. In any event the sources of this information is given in the Michael Lau document. As you noted there appears to be a discrepancy of one year in the report you have and the one given above for the birthdate of the eldest daughter and the spelling of her name In any event, the sources of this information is given in the Lau document and can be checked out further. I will look to see what I have on Francis Xavier Alwine, son of Michael and Sarah (Felty) Alwine and brother to Edward J. I'm afraid I do not understand your final question about the Jerome Allwein manuscript. Generally speaking I have found the Michael Lau source to be more complete than the Allwein manuscript with respect to the York/Adams County Alwine descendants. I definitely this this is true in the present case, the Lau document is not only more complete it is more accurate. I hope this helps and that there aren't too many typos in the above rendering. Best wishes, Cousin Duane On Mon, 29 Jan 2001, Cheryl A Lutz wrote: > Corrections to Alwines of York Co: according to the 1900 census Mary L Selak my gr aunt was born in Sep 1867. I know something about each of the individuals you listed in your recent query regarding York County Alwine descendants. Probably the best source of information we have on these Alwine families is Michael Lau's ALWINE FAMILIES OF YORK COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA AND SURROUNDING AREAS, which can be obtained from the Adams County Historical Society, Gettysburg, PA. It covers both York and Adams County. You probably know the history of the York/Adams County Alwines and their early connection to the Catholic community in Conewago Township, but let me briefly summarize some of what I know. Others may have information that will complement this. As you know, the Alwines in York and Adams County descend from Conrad I and Catharine Allwein of Lebanon, PA. There were three of Conrad I and Catherine Allwein's children who settled in the vicinity of York and Adams County: (1) Maria Magdalena, (2) Conrad II, and (3) Samuel. Unlike their Lebanon county relatives, they universally went by the name ALWINE. Maria Magdalena (Mollie) Allwein (b. Dec. 30, 1777, d. Dec. 3, 1856) married John Orndorff, son of Johann Hermanus Orndorff in 1795, and they moved to Gettysburg, PA (Adams County) where they raised several children. Conrad Alwine II (b. April 24, 1783, d. Feb. 9, 1846) settled in Adams County in the Conewago Creek community in the early 1800s. He married Susanna Eckenrode (sometimes spelled Eckenroth) September 4, 1808 at the Conewago Chapel in Conewago Township, and they had eleven children. He is buried in the cemetery behind the original site of the Conewago Chapel, which is now occupied by the Church of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Maria Magdalena and Conrad II Allwein's younger brother Samuel (b. Jan. 12, 1792, d. Nov. 13, 1865) also moved the area and settled in York County. He was one of the youngest of Conrad I and Catharine Allwein's children. He married Mary Shaeffer. The people whose names you mention are for the most part descendants of Conrad II and his brother Samuel. There is actually quite a lot known about them--both Conrad II and Samuel appear in the local histories of the Adams/York county area. Let me take up the Alwine descendants you mentioned one at a time (identified by the numbers you have given them), summarizing some of what we know about them. You can verify this information against other sources. Thomas Stobie's website is a great source of information. First let me take up the Alwines you listed who are descendants of Conrad II Alwine. #8. Lydia Ann Alwine: born 1846 to Samuel (b. July 4, 1809) and Susanna (Stormbach) Alwine. Samuel was the eldest son of Conrad II and Susannah (Eckenroth) Alwine. Lydia Ann is thus the great grandchild to Conrad I Allwein. I am assuming this is the same Lydia Alwine that married Jacob Althoff on January 29, 1888. #9. Mary Louise Alwine: born June 4, 1870 to Edward J. (b. Nov. 19, 1847) and Elizabeth M. (Spangler) Alwine. She married Henry Joseph Selak on June 16, 1888. Her father Edward J. Alwine was the son of Michael (b. 1817) and Sarah Anna (Felty) (b. 1817) Alwine. Michael was the 8th child of Conrad II and Susannah (Eckenroth) Alwine. #1. Charles David Alwine: born October 7, 1880 to Edward J. and Elizabeth M. (Spangler) Alwine. He married Alverta M. Haverstock (b. July 27, 1883) on December 24, 1903. He was a brother to Mary Louise (see #9) and Victoria Alwine (see #7). Their father Edward J. Alwine was the son of Michael (b. 1817) and Sarah Anna (Felty) (b. 1817) Alwine. This makes them the great-great grandchildren of Conrad I Allwein of Lebanon, PA. #7. Victoria Sarah Jane Alwine: born Feb. 9, 1876 to Edward J. and Elizabeth M. (Spangler) Alwine. She was a sister to Mary Louise (see #9) and Charles David Alwine (see #1). She married Thomas E. Kauffman on April 2, 1894. #2. George McClellan M. Alwine: born Sept. 29, 1864 to Michael (b. 1817) and Sarah Anna (Felty) (b. 1817) Alwine. He married Martha Kathryn Beatty on Feb. 20, 1890. He was a brother to Edward J. Alwine and grandson to Conrad II and great grandson to Conrad I Allwein. He died in 1928 and is buried with his wife in the Greenmount cemetery in York, PA. Now let me turn to the descendants of Samuel Alwine on your list. As I noted earlier, Samuel was one of the youngest sons of Conrad I Allwein, who moved to York County in the early 1800s. He married Mary Schaeffer and they had five children. They are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Paradise Township of York County. Many of those you inquired about are descendants of Samuel through his son Peter S. Alwine (b. Nov. 4, 1831, d. May 7, 1875). Peter taught school for many years in the area of Abbotsville, PA, but devoted most of his life to the manufacture of brick. The Alwine Brick Company still exits in New Oxford, PA, although now it goes by another name. He married Catharine Dahlhammer (b. June 2, 1845) on September 20, 1860 and they had 13 children. Peter and his wife Catherine were members of the Lutheran Church and are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Abbotstown, PA. #6. Sarah Ellen Alwine: born November 9, 1863 to Peter S. and Catherine (Dahlhammer) Alwine. She married Charles Moul Heilman November 29, 1885. Peter S. Alwine was one of two sons born to Samuel and Mary (Schaffer) Alwine. This makes Sarah Ellen Alwine a great grandchild of Conrad I Allwein of Lebanon PA. She died September 9, 1948. #5. William C. Alwine: born January 9, 1872 to Peter S. and Catherine (Dahlhammer) Alwine. He was a younger brother to Sarah Ellen Alwine (see #6). He married Cora Belle Miller on Sept. 16, 1897 and Constante Madeline Koehler on Nov. 9, 1942. There were three children from the first marriage. He died in February, 1970. #3. Lewis H. Alwine: born January 12, 1874 to Peter S. and Catherine (Dahlhammer) Alwine. He was a younger brother to Sarah Ellen (#6) and William C. Alwine (see #5). He married Minnie K. Spangler in November 5, 1899. I have records for only one child: Harry Spangler Alwine. Both Lewis and William carried on the manufacture of brick and were considered to be highly successful businessmen in the area. #10. Lloyd Alfred Alwine: born Sept. 13, 1903 to Samuel Willis and Mary Catherine (Zinn) Alwine. Samuel Willis Alwine (b. Dec. 8, 1869) was a son of Peter S. and Catharine (Dahhammer) Alwine. Lloyd Alfred was one of 6 children. He is a great grandchild of Samuel Alwine and therefore a great great grandchild to Conrad I Allwein of Lebanon PA. He married Mary Jane Hafer on May 24, 1927. He died May 24, 1983. Finally, I have very little information about one of the people you listed -- Victor Ambrose Alwine: #4. Victor Ambrose Alwine: born July 22, 1873 to Frank E. and Isabella M. (Foller) Alwine. He was married to Alice J. Benedict (b. 1875) on July 17, 1894. I do not know anything more about Frank, other than the fact that he and Isabella had six children. Perhaps others can tie him in with the other Adams/York Alwine families. I hope this helps. Cousin Duane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Duane F.
