In Wilcox County, unless you lived in a small town, schools were often community projects (at least in theory) and were located on one of the larger estates. In practice they may have been paid for (the teacher's salary) by the owner of the estate. They were typically small one-room schoolhouses now long gone so it is doubtful that much in the way of records exists now. However, there were some boarding schools around also. The closest ones I can think of were at Marion, AL. That would be Judson College for the girls and Marion Military Institute for the boys. Marion Istitute was originally called Howard English and Classical School. Both were Baptist-sponsored schools and both still exist. I'm not sure how young the kids could be at either. It seems to me that Oak Hill Female Academy near Camden also took boarding students and that would have been closer to Pineapple. My group was one the other side of the river and went the other direction. Schools in Wilcox County in the mid 1800s??? Is there a list? I think my grandfather Alfred Bennett Roberson may have been in a boarding school when he was ten to ??? He isn't found with his step-father Isaac Ingram and Polly Sills Ingram in any census record when he is young. Not with any of his grandparents. So, I thought maybe...a boarding school. Any ideas? Thank you for any info. Freda Roberson Noble >My great grandmother, Minnie A Hurd Sadler said she grew up on a >plantation in Pine Apple, Ala and went to a girl's school or >college.
