In Wilcox County, unless you lived in a small town, schools were often community projects (at least in theory) and were located on one of the larger estates. In practice they may have been paid for (the teacher's salary) by the owner of the estate. They were typically small one-room schoolhouses now long gone so it is doubtful that much in the way of records exists now. However, there were some boarding schools around also. The closest ones I can think of were at Marion, AL. That would be Judson College for the girls and Marion Military Institute for the boys. Marion Istitute was originally called Howard English and Classical School. Both were Baptist-sponsored schools and both still exist. I'm not sure how young the kids could be at either. It seems to me that Oak Hill Female Academy near Camden also took boarding students and that would have been closer to Pineapple. My group was one the other side of the river and went the other direction. What was your granny's first name and do you know which county she was from? I am looking for given names in the Mckenzie/Mckenzie/Mckinsie...etc lines: Susan, Kinnith, Peter, John, William, Nancy, Rebecca, Elizabeth. But since this is your granny, those names would go back a couple more generations. Thanks for anything you can tell me. Email me direct if you like, but put Mckinzey family in the subject line (or some variation spelling of it) so I know who you are. Thanks again. sincerely, c. sullivan

James B. Thompson who married Martha A. R. Lowery in 1845 in Monroe co., al. Elizabeth Thompson who married Thomas Peter Kennedy and their dau. Mary b. 1831 in Monroe co., al. married Alexander Lowery. (so it appears there is a strong lowery/thompson connection in this family line.) But now, you guys got me offtrack here. I also have a HUGE williams line outta butler co. al. that ties back into the jones lines which go into the wilcox co. area as well. My initial question to audrey was actually about her mckenzie connection. Can you give me a brief mckenzie lesson please? thanks c. sullivan

James Thompson. Rev Thompson started Society Hill Methodist Church in Wilcox Co, AL. I gathered from your query that the Williams family might be from Wilcox county. James Thompson was my gggg grandfather, and his son, Benjamin Davis Thompson had a daughter, Martha Branche Thompson who married a Williams. I have been unable to locate the first name of Mr Williams. Was just wondering if they might be connected. Census records have Martha born abt 1842, in Wilcox County.
