    3. SOURCE; HISTORY OF WALKER COUNTY, EARLY SETTLERS PHILLIPS, Jacob (it is not Kacon, my bad), was born in VA. about 1806 and was brought to Walker County about 1810. He is thought to have had four brothers who later entered government land - Robert PHILLIPS, who entered land in Section 19, Township 14, Range 5, on July 19, 1833; Gerorge W. PHILLIPS, who entered land in Section 30, Township 14, Range 5, on Sept 22, 1835; John PHILLIPS, who entered land in Section 24, Township 13, Range 10, on Jan 7, 1836; and Jefferson PHILLIPS, who entered land in Section 8, Township 15, Range 5, on November 5, 1836. Jacob PHILLIPS remained in Walker County until his death, and was not only a farmer and planter, but in the early 1840's was engaged in mining coal near Cordova. He was married to a Miss Henson. (Moore's Alabama Vol 111, page 143, Walker County Tract Record) ------------------------- PHILLIPS, John Washington, was born January 31, 1840, near the confluence of the Sipsey and Mulberry Forks. In Sept 1861, he enlisted at Jasper as a private in Company I, Fiftieth Alabama Infantry, under Capt. Long. In December, 1861, he was discharged on account of physical disability, and in November, 1862, he re-enlisted in Company F, Fifty-Six Alabama Calvalry, under Captain Rice, and served until the close of the war. (Census of Confederate Soldiers 1907) --------------------------------------------------------- Phillips, William, was born July 27, 1840, near Dora. In August, 1862, he enlisted at Jasper as a private in Company F, Fifty-sisth Alabama Calvary, under Capt. Rice. He was severely wounded near Jackson, MS., on February 9, 1863, and was on sick furlough for the balance of the war. (Census of Confederate Soldiers) ------------------------------------------ PHILLIPS, Jefferson L., was born near Dora in 1844. In August, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Company F, Fifty-sixth Alabama Calvary, under Captain Rice, and served until the close of the war. He died July 28, 1887, at his home near Mulberry Fork, an esteemed and highly respected citizen, who was Tax Collector of the county at the time of his death. (Census of Confederate Soldiers, 1907. Mountain Eagle, August 3, 1887) ----------------------------------------- MY COMMENT- The AL Archives has Confederate records on-line. delilah evans ----- Original Message ----- From: "Delilah" <diamond6468@mindspring.com> To: <alwalker@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 25, 2008 6:16 PM Subject: Re: [ALWALKER] Early Settlers of Walker County, Alabama | it will have to be tomorrow | ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Katherine Reece" <kat@hallofmaat.com> | To: <alwalker@rootsweb.com> | Sent: Saturday, October 25, 2008 4:46 PM | Subject: Re: [ALWALKER] Early Settlers of Walker County, Alabama | | || Thank you for the Martin Marion Phillips information. 3. Thank you! Btw .. has anyone in the group ever seen any Phillips money? My great grandfather, John B. Phillips, minted his own money. I used to have a piece but my ex stole it from me while we were divorcing.
