    3. I'm afraid I don't know where Stacks Bottom is ... I've attached a map ..... also this page on my website has a listing of the people buried there. http://www.katscelticroots.com/pfc.htm (clicking on the celtic knots takes you a picture... made with my first digital camera... they're pretty poor quality... I need to take better images now.) Not listed is my great Aunt - Clara Clark Phillips - who passed away a couple of years ago. Someday I'll be there as well. To visit the cemetery contact Lester and Kathleen Phillips, they're listed and live right near the cemetery on Phillips Road. Robert D. Phillips and his wife Sarah Burnam are also buried here in graves marked only with rocks. Aunt Clara showed me a long time agao where they are. I've got a VA Confederate stone to put on his grave. I'm just trying to scrap up the money for a marker for his wife too and then we'll put them in place. Katherine

    2. Is your Phillips Cemetery down in Stacks Bottom? The WCGS has read and indexed many of the Walker County Cemeteries, but I am not familiar with that one. There are still many more to be read and indexed which is a volunteer type job. **************Access 350+ FREE radio stations anytime from anywhere on the web. Get the Radio Toolbar! My grandmother (Martha Phillips Berrey) and my great Aunt (Clara Clark Phillips) told me there was a church there at one time which burned down. I think that was before my grandmother was born. 3. I should leave all the details to the experts but I do want to > mention before you consider cleaning any stone that you first make very sure > that it is safely and prominently secure in its position before you attempt > any exercise in cleaning. You do have to make sure the stone is not fragile. Putting pressure to clean it with a brush on a weak or leaning stone may damage it further. Also run your hand across the stone, if you feel something like sugar granules come away on your hand then the stone is sugaring and you shouldn't clean it. It's likely we'll be recording the demonstrations by Charles Thomas, I'll post them on our website http://www.chiltoncemeteries.org and let y'all know about here if you like. Katherine PS... I'm in Clanton now ... but descended from the Phillips and Goodwin families. My family cemetery is the Phillips Cemetery in Empire. My grandmother (who is still with us) is the granddaughter of Martin Marion Phillips.

    3. Would someone hunt for an article about this, My aunt Lucy SNYDER, way we spelled it, had a husband Like SNIDER, who was killed in a gunfight, drive-by in Dora. Not sure of date but must of been in the 1920's. Her sister my grandmother, Bennie Will TINKER EVANS was born in Pisgah, where is that if anybody knows, I just found some of my old notes. She married Thomas Watson EVANS, my grandfather, b. Oct 12, 1884, in Dade County, GA July 18, 1904. He was probably a coal miner, as most of us were. delilah evans

    3. Hi Katherine and all ALWalker list members, First, the good news for you Katherine in Texas... Texas has an active RIP program for gravestones and has several protocols for gravestone care. The green mossy like substance you refer to may be "lichens' (The Texas Historical Commission just gave Collin County Texas a workshop on gravestones. It was a workshop that I was able to attend and you might look for other such workshops that might be held by Texas County Genealogical and Historical Societies near you, in the near future.) Look here for more information as it pertains to your local programs. Much of this website deals with registering for historical designation which then make that cemetery available for their RIP program. http://www.thc.state.tx.us/cemeteries/cemrip.shtml As a non-renewable resource a cemetery and its stones need our protection and care. I should leave all the details to the experts but I do want to mention before you consider cleaning any stone that you first make very sure that it is safely and prominently secure in its position before you attempt any exercise in cleaning. There are several things that I had never heard before about wetting the stone and cleaning from the bottom up and what tools to use and what things not to do that I had not heard explained. They has a very short list of what items you can use on a stone besides water---again I will let the experts explain. Please feel free to contact the RIP program to learn more. As for what one might learn in Alabama, these types on workshops are really important----many of the old suggestions have changed so be sure and look for the newest lists of proper methods. When in doubt, its best to leave a stone untouched. I note that they have written you back on the list, and with more info, and it looks be many of the very same things taught here. It's really fabulous that cemeteries have begun to gain more interest in preservation. 3. > I live in Texas and will not be able to attend the headstone workshop. However, I am very interested in learning the "how to's" > My great grandparents headstones are being covered by a small green mossy-like substance. Use a popsicle stick and scrap it off .... then wash it with plain water and a brush. That does a lot of good just that alone. Whatever you do don't use bleach, bleach sets up a chemical reaction in the stones that will eventually destroy them. I'll ask him if there's anything that can kill the moss off safely and keep it from coming back. No moss on it ... but we got these results in just 15 minutes of brush and water... http://www.chiltoncemeteries.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=65 If we'd had our popsicle sticks with us I'd have got that nasty black stuff of it too.... we'd have gotten it whiter but it was just a quick stop at this cemetery. This is information from the guidelines sent to us by the Alabama Historical Commission If cleaning with water does not achieve satisfactory results, consider these other products that have been determined safe for use on historic gravestones: a. Non-Ionic detergents i. Kodak's Photo Flo, availabe at photographic suppliers. Use 1 oz to 5 gallons of water. ii.Vulpex: available from conservator's supply houses. Use 2 parts Vulpex to 2-4 part water. iii. Orvis: a horse soap available from equine suppliers. b. Biocide (safely removes algae, mold, and mildew) i. D2 available from Cathedral Stone Products. Depending on the type of the deposit, it can be used undiluted or in a 1:1 or 1:4 ratio. Do not use stronger solutions such as acids, bleach, or blasting to remove dirt or plant growth from the gravestones. While you might be initially impressed by the extremely white appearcnce that you get when you clean with acids or bleach, you have introduced chemicals into the pores of the historic gravestone that will infinitely increase the speed of deterioration. Household detergents and cleaners such as Dawn, Ivory, Tide, 409, Windex, Clorox Borax, Tilex, etc should never beused to clean historic gravestones. These products could contain acids that will lead to the formation of salt crystals that get trapped in the pores of the stone, grow, and eventually cause breaks in the stone.

    3. I am a grandson of Richard, a brother of Young Marion Ivy. Yes, Young Marion served in the Union Army, but his Dad, Richard Ivy, served in the Confederate Army. Young Marion also changed his name from Ivy to Ivey because he was tired of being called a plant. I met Young Marion Ivey, Jr. in the late 1960's when we lived in Huntsville, Alabama. My Dad and Mom knew him when they lived north of Jasper in Walker county, Alabama. He died 22 Nov. 1972 He really liked to go deer hunting and he went hunting when he was 85. 1. [ALWALKER] James A. MILLER and wife, Mary J., possibly Mary SHERER?
    2. Craig Beeman
    3. "Hello again Cousins!" Have been trying to confirm who Mary SHERER, b abt 1876, the daughter of Madison Monroe SHERER and Martha E. KILGORE, married. A former researcher attributed her as having been married to one Robert KILGORE, but on examining the U. S. Census many, many, many times, I believe Robert F. KILGORE married May SHERER, b abt 1881. On checking for entries of the given name "Mary, b abt 1876", and examining something like fifty different households in the 1900 census, I believe that Madison Monroe SHERER's daughter Mary, may very well have married one James A. MILLER, b abt 1872, Georgia. His wife, Mary, attributes her father's birthplace as having been "South Carolina", and that of her mother as "Alabama", and being the only Mary of the right age, and the correct attribution of her parents' birth places in three out of four successive census schedules, am hopeful that one or more among you might be familiar with this family and be able to confirm who James A. MILLER's wife was indeed for the benefit of this tired old "Cousin Junkie". Thank you in advance for any and all help or assistance in resolving this issue for my benefit. Thank you.
