My "pet peeve" is receiving the postings and finding that nothing has been deleted from previous posts. Please remember to delete the tag lines at the bottom, such as "To contact the ALWALKER, etc", and any posts that don't have a relationship to your information or query that you are writing when you write a new message. I receive my posts in digest form and have been scrolling thru lots of "hello, I'm here, Good to hear from you", etc. that have been on the list for the last week or so as well as more lengthy messages that have been repeated several times. I'm not saying that each is unimportant - just that once read and without a follow-up they take up lots of space, especially the end tags. This is what I ask of the members on the list I of which I am the administrator. Sure makes reading easier, more interesting and easier to catch something of meaning to me. Caroline Hamilton Horton

Karen, I am descended from Martha Jane Kitchens, who I bleieve is the granddaughter of James Matlock. I will send you the info I have in the next day or so...but do you have, for example, Christopher Columbus Kitchens, etc. Martha Jane was the daughter of Jesse Simeon Kitchens, and she married James Hiram Barton and had a son named Harles Hubert,w ho was my father. I am interested in finding any info. on the Kitchens from their religious side, among other things. My understanding is that Jesse was a Primitive Baptist minister. I was wondering if anyone had any info. on when the family became Primitive Baptists, what religion they were prior to that, and any records they have regarding the Old Sardis Church. --- On Wed, 5/20/09, Karen Kitchens Murphy <kmurphycsa@msn.com> wrote: From: Karen Kitchens Murphy <kmurphycsa@msn.com> Subject: Re: [ALWALKER] IS ANYONE OUT THERE To: "WALKER CO ROOTSWEB" <alwalker@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, May 20, 2009, 7:21 PM I here too. Here is a different source for Alabama Families in Early History... Many people advertised in Baptist or Methodist newspapers. The papers were circulated all over. Extracts have been published in books. For example, I found in one book where Edward Gordon Musgrove (1830, 1840, 1850 census in Walker County, Alabama, ) had advertised for the whereabouts of his son, Bushrod William Musgrove, who failed to keep in touch. His father last heard from him, he said, in Louisiana. He had actually moved on there to Texas living in Hunt and Woods County. This was solid evidence that Bushrod was his son. The Huntsville Library has these books on the shelf. The next time I go to the library, I will find those books and post the title and other identification, on line. I think they are out of print; but, perhaps other libraries have them as well. I think those newspapers were published out of Tennessee. Ann S. I'm Wes Keat and I joined the list a while back. I'm working on the Ellis, Nelson, Wilson / Willson , Ivey / Ivy , Pate and Kite families in Walker County. Revolutionary War vet Andrew Nelson is at the top of the tree. My great grandfather was John Jackson Ellis, born near Jasper in 1883. His wife was Hattie Oma Ivey. Her father was Thomas Richard Ivey [or Ivy]. Thomas Richard Ivey (parents Richard Ivey and Elizabeth Kite) was born July 4, 1862 near Jasper,Walker County,Alabama. He died near Bullard, Texas on April 14, 1939. Thomas Richard Ivey married Iona Pate at Fayette County TN on October 23, 1885. Iona Pate was born July 9, 1870 near Jasper, Alabama. (parents Richard Michael Pate and Sarah Jane Kite) She died in 1946. I have some information to share. I have a public tree at Ancestry.com 5) Something else that's productive and genealogy related: My ambition (in lengthy latency) is to compile a history of 56th AL Partisan Rangers. Many who served therein were recruited or conscripted in Walker County.(e.g. R.M. Pate, Y.M. Ivey) [Some number later served in the Union Army --1st AL CAV.] Wes Keat Eureka, California --- On Wed, 5/20/09, BOB BINSTEIN <just-4bob@msn.com> wrote: From: BOB BINSTEIN <just-4bob@msn.com> Subject: Re: [ALWALKER] IS ANYONE OUT THERE? Thats him .... I'll see if my grandmother remembers that as her maiden name. Her memory is still very very good and she remembers a lot of the people who lived in the area. Ima and Alfred were her sister and brother. She told me they moved into Birmingham for a short while so the men could get jobs. Here's an interesting picture http://www.katscelticroots.com/img/phillips01.jpg It's Alfred Phillips and his sister Mabel Phillips Cox .... I don't know what is happening with those outfits ... If anyone on the list lives in Walker County in the Sumiton area and knows Doris Scurlock, Mabel Phillips Cox was her mother. Kat Reece Earl Phillips died 26 Sep 1932 aged 25y 10m 26d Spouse: Jewel Rowe Phillips Father: John B Phillips Mother Lillian Ann Goodwin Source: Alabama Death Record at http://pilot.familysearch.org presumptive siblings Ima and Alfred also have records there The 1930 census shows a matching Phillips family in Birmingham [no Jewels in that family then] Sorry, I haven't any marriage records. My great-Uncle Earl Phillips was born in 1906 and died in 1932. I had always thought he had never married until my Uncle Charles passed away and his wife gave me the family pictures that he had. I was showing them to my grandmother, Martha Elizabeth Phillips Berrey (97 and still kicking!) and she told me it was Earl and his wife Jewel. She doesn't remember Jewel's maiden name and I love to have that information. I'm not sure what year they married, my grandmother believes that they had not been married long when Earl died.
