Caroline, The original Patton Cemetery is located just off Alabama 18 highway between Oakman and Corona on the same road as Patton Hill Cemetery. As you turn right off Alabama 18, go through the flat land, begin to climb up a hill toward Patton Hill Cemetery, pass a home on the right with a barn on the other side of the road, slow down and look in the ditch on the right side of the road. There you will see the grave of Andrew Patton. His grave is marked! The other graves that are in this cemetery are underneath the road-bed. I have it listed as # 245 on my Cemetery Map of Walker County. It is listed as the same number in Craig Remington's "Historical Atlas of Alabama, Cemeteries by locations and County". When this new road came through, the county workers placed the road in the wrong place and covered the cemetery. There were about 25 to 30 graves at this location. My map placing cemeteries in correct position by using a GPS. That map was published in 2000 with 304 locations and now I have found a total of 338 cemeteries in Walker County alone. I turned the information into Craig about Patton Cemetery. I hope this helps. Should you need any more assistance, please let me know. My John Gant and wife Matilda Knight left Laurens before 1840, were probably in Cobb County GA in 1840, were in St Clair County AL with several children in 1850, and were living in Jefferson County by 1860. Matilda was no longer with the family. Land records show that John was living on land in the Beat Ten area of Walker County between 1850 and 1860. John is said to be buried in Fairview Cemetery in Walker County. I have found a grave that may be John but not sure. Some of his children are buried in Fairview cemetery. Most of his children and some grandchildren lived in Beat Ten and some moved on to Oakman, Parrish. Tuscaloosa County, and Fayette County. I have not been able to establish kin with the Knights in and around Townley. There is another line of Gants who settled near Parrish that I have not yet connected with my Gant line. Charner Knight who may be a brother of Matilda Knight Gant, wife of John Gant, lived in Beat Ten near John Gant's land but had moved to Jonesboro in Jefferson County by 1870. Charner Knight died in Jefferson County. Thanks. Sara Message.... You wrote: From: "Claudia Kraemer" <cfk@airmail.net>To: Hi Caroline--- So does this mean that Guy Argo went by the name of "Ralph"? Or do I have something linked wrong? I show that Flora Fields did have a son named Ralph who died in 1927?? But I show that Flora Fields(1893-1991) daughter of Robert Felix Fields and Ophelia Elizabeth Phillips was married to Guy Argo Claudia, I may have used the wrong wording, I've deleted that digest. I have that Guy Lonzo Argo (death cert from familysearch.org) was married to Flora Fields, dau of Robert Felix Fields and *you just gave me his wife's name*. The cert of death, again from familysearch.org, not the copy of the original, shows that Ralph is the son of Guy and Flora. Ralph won't show on a census since his death cert indicates he was born ca 1925 and died at Children's Hosp in B'ham in 1927. John, you named the children and stated that one boy died at age two. Ralph must be that child. John has shared much Argo info with me. Do either of you know what the "V" stood for in Sanford V. Argo's name? Caroline, gt. granddaughter. of Sanford V. Argo
Does anyone have any information about the Miller family from GA who is found in the household of Clayton McGill on the 1880 census in York? Can't figure out who they are! There is - with Clayton- John Miller, 18, Milly, 16, Mary 14, Jane 11, Charles 8, and Samuel. The next household lists Mary miller and John Burd. Clayton is the divorced husband of Elizabeth Spain (Disspain) McGill who is also a resident of Walker County but in Jasper. Her household included her son, Duke McGill, age 1 (my great grandfather) as well as Clayton's children by Emilene McLaughlin- his 2nd wife- and several of her children by her lst marriage to James Disspain. Clayton McGill was the father of Marion McGill who married Ruth Elizabeth Romine on 20 July 1883-They lived in Townley. Any information about Elizabeth Disspain, Clayton McGill or the Millers will be greatly appreciated. I didn't get out my DOT map when I wrote the above and, as you know, the roads aren't marked in the U of A book (one downfall of that book - that's why you need the DOT map to go along with the other.) Someone on the list had mentioned going to Patton Chapel this summer and I thought my info *might* help. Thanks for you directions. *Your* cemetery map is the one in the Jasper library? I purchased my Atlas in early 2000 - wonder if it has been updated. And how amazing that the one marker hasn't been vandalized! Do you know when the cemetery was destroyed by the workers? Just curious as I hope there are enough rules and regs in place now to prevent that. Thanks again, Caroline
Matilda Knight from Laurens District SC married John Gant. Matilda is believed to be sister of Charner Knight also from Laurens and in Walker County before 1850. After 1850 John Gant and his children lived in the Beat Ten area of Walker County. John was my g-g-grandfather. Matilda died before 1850. Hello, I am looking for confirmation that I have the correct parents for an ancestor of my cousin. A while ago I was given the parents and some other ancestor information for Nomia Wright and I'd like some confirmation I have the correct ancestors for her. What I know for sure is that Nomia Wright was born in Carbon Hill Alabama 31 Jan 1893. She married Pete Agaliotis. She had five children with Pete Agaliotis: Nicholas 1916, Zoe 1918, William 1920, Louis 1923, and James 1926. She died 27 Oct 1928 in Sheffield Alabama at the Colbert County Hospital and is buried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Carbon Hill. Possibilities: I have Meriah Kitchens as Nomia's mother and Lewis Monroe Wright as her father. I do have her death certificate and her parents are not listed...except her father's surname is given as Wright. Her birthplace is listed as Fayette County Alabama. Parents of Meriah I have listed as Richard Anderson Kitchens and Lucy Allen Woods. Parents of Lewis Monroe Wright I have as William A. Wright and Luzia Smith. I got the names Meriah Kitchens and Lewis Monroe Wright from a Kitchens researcher who knew about the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery and told me these folks had a daughter named Nomia. I believe Lewis and Meriah had at least two other children, daughters Ida and Ada. I have NO concrete proof that any of this is for sure and I hate that!! Questions...if anyone knows.... Do I have the correct parents for Nomia? Does anyone have Meriah Kitchens in their genealogy study? Did Meriah have a daughter named Nomia (or Naomi or Nomi)? Were Meriah Kitchens and Lewis Monroe Wright married? Would a birth certificate of Nomia born in 1893 exist? Do I have the correct parents for Meriah and Lewis? Since Nomia was buried in the PGBC Cemetery was if possibly because she had most of her family in that area? Can I find a marriage certificate for Pete and Nomia since I don't have a date and only a guess on the year? More background: Pete Agaliotis married a second time to Edna Borden Hill (she divorced her first husband Mr. Hill and left their children in the care of her parents). Pete and Edna had two children Doris and David. David is my father. I'm trying to find information about Nomia out for my cousin who is the son of William Agaliotis. I'm doing an Agaliotis genealogy study for my family and would like to include the correct information for Pete's first wife. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. Perrin Agaliotis Larton

I want to add a very positive reason to give family information on this list. We can browse or search the list for all postings sent since the "beginning of time :)" This has been very helpful to me because old postings often have the info I was needing but that person who posted may no longer be a list member. Old list members forget this source and new researchers may not be aware of it. Go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ALWALKER/ and you can do the search - or browse in each month and year. If looking at another list just change the county/list name (ALWALKER to ALBIBB). And what makes the search easier? Having the subject fit the posted information. "Need help" or "looking for family" does not give a clue as to what is in that post. "Kitchens and Hamilton family" or something similar lets the searcher know that the post will probably have some useful information. Food for thought? Caroline
Have you tried searching for Kilgo where you expect these to be? I am kin to Kilgo's in Winston & Walker counties. Don't know if this will help or hinder, but I have a William Kilgore married to Sarah Emeline Busbee both from Walker County / Jefferson County. Have no dates but cir. 1840 is about right, I show one male child John L. Kilgore married to Ellen Parker, they had 9 children. The youngest born abt. 1890. So guessing John would have been bornbetween 1865 and 1870. That could mean William may have been born sometime after 1840, but by about 1850? My research is based on our Hancock line. Hancock's SC to Green county abt. 1840. Then to Walker County by 1850 (Tax Rolls). Later to Jefferson County. Both the early Hancock's as well as the early Kilgore's are buried in Shanghi Ebenezer Baptist Church which is just across the Jefferson County Line into Walker County.
