    3. See Matt Clinton's "Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Its Early Days, 1816-1865" or his book "Scrapbook". Bryce Hospital was established in 1852 for the mentally ill. It is located across University Blvd. from the area formerly known as the Castle Hill neighborhood. Now, you must remember. All patients were not mentally ill in those days. Those who were mentally challenged, one way or another, or had migraine headaches, etc., etc., unfortunately, were placed temporarily and sometimes permanently in Bryce. It was a State hospital. Suggest you try to read more about Tuscaloosa's history in a library some where. We are fortunate here in Tuscaloosa to have the Gorgas Library on the U of A campus and the Tuscaloosa Public Library. Birmingham has a great Southern History library facility - good libraries are all over the state IF you live near enough to "go there". There was an Indian community in Hale County at Moundville near Tuscaloosa. Do not know my history enough to give you dates on that one - Now, Sue....I've told you all I know. <g> Again, good luck !
