I am researching my husband's HOLLIS line. His Grandfather, J.P. Hollis died in 1935 in Jefferson Co., AL. His mother was Betty Joyce Hollis. Her father was Joseph Post Hollis. I'm told he was married once before and his first wife died. But before she died they had a child named Robert Earl Hollis in 1920. I found an ancestral file for a marriage between a Cormon Elsie Bush and Joseph Post Hollis on 23 Nov. 1919. It did not list a county for the marriage. It listed that Cormon was born 19 Jan. 1902 in McCalla, Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. And that she was a daughter to Harlan Benjamin Alexander Bush and Amanda Jane Abernathy. In the Alabama Death Index, 1908-59 I found a Mrs. Cormon Hollis , 13 Oct. 1922, Jefferson, Vol. #40, Role #2, Page #19683 and an infant Hollis, 13 Oct. 1922, Jefferson Co., AL, Vol. #40, Role #2, Page 19680, infant of J.P. Hollis. I believe Cormon Elsie Bush was my husband's grandfather's first wife and that they had a son named Robert Earl and while having a second child, her and the baby died. If anyone recognizes these names, please contact me. I have information on the Hollis family including pictures of J.P and Robert Earl that I can share. Thank you, P. Forister
Jeremiah K. DUKE was married in Perry Co., Al., in Jan.1836. His bride was Caroline WOOLLEY. They had two children who were Rachel Ann Shunsey DUKE, first-born (I have not dob for her!), and Lovick Sherrod DUKE, b. 7-10-1840. Caroline was a widow, probably by the end of 1842, because she was married again, in May, 1843, to Alexander WORRELL. This marriage also occurred in Perry Co. It has been my personal 'brick wall', trying to discover the name of the parents of Jeremiah K. DUKE!! No details of his earlier life of any kind have been found, to this date. There were other DUKE family members in the Perry Co. area, about most of whom I have some knowledge. For instance, Robert DUKE (probably a widower), son of Thomas DUKE of Fairfield Dist., SC, had migrated to Perry Co. with his son's family, who were James and his wife, Elizabeth Judith WILSON DUKE. James and Lizzie Judith (as she was called) had eleven or more children, some of whom settled in the Perry Co. area, and others who moved west into Mississippi, and beyond. Some possible connections have been found, which might link Jeremiah K. to these folks, but all the details are strictly circumstantial, in nature. These questions arise on the points mentioned below, regarding him. 1. What is the significance of the initial 'K.' in his name? Does it indicate the possible initial of his mother's maiden surname?? If you can shed light, please do!! 2. Could Robert DUKE, son of Thomas of Fairfield, and father of James, have had another son, named Jeremiah?? James is the only off-spring of Robert who is well-documented, so far as any known records have revealed. 3. If Robert is not the father of Jeremiah K., then who could be his father?? 4. Where could he have come from?? 5. Who was his mother, and ----- those are just a few!! You can see that there are some curious blank spots in the records, concerning Jeremiah K!! Can you help?? Regards. Joe DUKE ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 18, 2001 1:00 PM Subject: ALHALE-D Digest V01 #82

I don't know where the person lives who requested info re vital records, but, if in AL or close by the library at Wallace Jr. College in Hanceville has micorfilm copies of death certificates. One can use an index, pull up the certificate and be sure it is the right person before making a copy. I don't know if they take requests but perhaps someone on the list does. In response to Ed Waller's inquiry about his Patton relatives: Have you checked with Alabama Vital Records for death certificates on Oakley Patton and Dexter Patton? If they died in Alabama in the forties, there should be death certificates. Vital Records is very quick and you can download a request form from their website at http://www.alapubhealth.org/vital/vitalrcd.htm I have obtained records from them and it is very quick--response within a week! Happy New Year to all! I'm continuing to search for PATTON, McGEE, LINDSEY, and BOSWELL surnames in Tuscaloosa County, but thought I'd take a little different angle at it this time and look for some 'more recent' ancestors... Looking for - Oakley PATTON (b. Aug 1909 d. cir 1949). Family lore says that he played semi-pro baseball in Alabama and died mysteriously--perhaps in Birmingham. - Dexter PATTON (b. cir 1904 d. cir 1940). Family lore says he died in a vehicle accident. Both were born in Tuscaloosa County and are the sons of Elijah Andrew PATTON and Mary Catherine LINDSEY, m. cir 1899 in Tuscaloosa County. Surely will appreciate any leades or information anyone can share on these 2 kinfolk. Thanks Ed Waller
There is a book titled "A Walk Through Greenwood Cemetery" by Joey Brackner and Rae Hague Eighmey, published by the City of Tuscaloosa and the Heritage Commission of Tuscaloosa County. I have a copy and purchased it in Tuscaloosa at the Historical Commission office. It contains a listing of people buried there as well as a walking tour and locator for graves in the cemetery. It also describes the type of grave marker, information on the each person buried there (age, dates, relationships) as shown on the markers. If I can help with information from the book, please contact me. Also, I would also like information on the Pool Cemetery (old Sartin/Sartain cemetery). My great grandmother was Mary Anne Sartain, daughter of William Turner Sartain. William Turner Sartain and many of the Sartains are buried in the cemetery at PRovidence Baptist Church in Walker County, but I am missing some of the crew and think they are in Tuscaloosa County. Mary Anne Price
I have one Sartain in my chart. Her name was Mary Jemes Sartain m. Henry Clay Boyd, Sr.. They are buried in Boyd Cemetery in Peterson, Alabama (Tuscaloosa County). They had 4 children Inez, Henry Clay Jr., Dora, Myrtle. Just sharing what I have. David Boyd
