Looking for information regarding Elizabeth H. Parker (born abt. 1837) who married on April 27, 1853 (she was 16) Joshua M. Barfield (he was of age) in Tuscaloosa Co., AL. Elizabeth died before October 5, 1859 (her father's will). Elizabeth and Joshua had one child - Amanda A. Barfield who was mentioned in Elizabeth's father's will and also Thomas Hutchins (Elizabeth's grandfather)will. I have looked in 1860, 1880 census of Tuscaloosa and Joshua is not listed. Would anyone have any information on either of these families? Thank you. Paula [email protected]
See Matt Clinton's "Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Its Early Days, 1816-1865" or his book "Scrapbook". Bryce Hospital was established in 1852 for the mentally ill. It is located across University Blvd. from the area formerly known as the Castle Hill neighborhood. Now, you must remember. All patients were not mentally ill in those days. Those who were mentally challenged, one way or another, or had migraine headaches, etc., etc., unfortunately, were placed temporarily and sometimes permanently in Bryce. It was a State hospital. Suggest you try to read more about Tuscaloosa's history in a library some where. We are fortunate here in Tuscaloosa to have the Gorgas Library on the U of A campus and the Tuscaloosa Public Library. Birmingham has a great Southern History library facility - good libraries are all over the state IF you live near enough to "go there". There was an Indian community in Hale County at Moundville near Tuscaloosa. Do not know my history enough to give you dates on that one - Now, Sue....I've told you all I know. <g> Again, good luck ! Charlotte
Prior to about 1955 Castle Hill was a black neighborhood community on both sides of 10th Street (now Bryant Drive) and between 10th (Bryant Drive) and University Blvd.. Located adjacent to the Ft. Brandon Armory facility prior to its demolition and the building of the current Tuscaloosa Fire Station #2. The community started near the entrance to Bryce Hospital on present University Blvd. up to about the DCH Regional Medical facility. Maybe some one could look this up in one of the books re history of Tuscaloosa for us. Charlotte [email protected]
Can anyone tell me what "Castle Hill" was on 10th AV Tuscaloosa? This being in the 1850 time frame!!! Is there a "Castle Hill" today? I have a note saying that is where my G-grandfather's people were from. Thanks, ~Sue~
I went searching for Parkers in the Evergreen Cemetery several weeks ago. I found the following. Would anyone have any idea of the names? This area was furthest away from the football stadium and next to, I think, a church building. There were only pieces of stone with the initials and dates on them. William A. Parker - Confederate Soldier 1835-1908 DPV 1875 - 1903 WPV 1902 - 1902 NBP 1875 - 1910 MFP 1841 - 1929 CFP 1863 - 1905 OP 1870 - 1897 Thanks. Paula [email protected]

I found this in some records from my research: AL Records-Civil Records 1836-1838 May 18, 1849 NANCY MOORE, widow of MICHAEL MOORE, deceased, his son, Wm. M. MOORE, Admin: Securities: William DOWDLE, NANCY MOORE. Appraisers: WM DOWDLE, PHILLIP SHETTLESWORTH, DAVID LINLEY, JAMES DOWDLE, ROBERT MITCHELL In my search for JAMES MONROE SMITH, SR. & JR.(b. Jan. 1866 Cottondale, Tuscaloosa, AL), my grandfather & great grandfather, I find that these same names again in the SHUTTLESWORTH line -MARY CATHERINE to ANDREW SMITH. I find this strange as PHILLIP SHUTTLESWORTH'S widow, NANCY m. to WILLIAM VANCE raised my grandfather,(Jr). In a letter my grandfather wrote he said he was about 3 years old when he was supposed to be adopted. His father and mother were JAMES MONROE SMITH and MATILDA SMITH. His father died when he was an infant. James didn't know where they lived. In 1935, they were both deceased. Is there something here or is it a coincidence? If anyone finds a clue please let me know. I figured that PHILLIP and MARY CATHERINE'S father were brothers. Didn't I figure correctly? Thanks, Kay

I saw the Gandrud volumes at the Tuscaloosa Library. There are many, many volumes. There is a wide variety of listings for marriage and death, as well as lots of other info. The information comes from sources, such as the Tuscaloosa Times and other public records. The marriage notices are great because in other existing indexes you just see bride/groom. Here you find the bride's father's name and where event took place(usually at home of father). I am fairly certain that the LDS centers have these volumes. Mariann
I'm in Texas and most libraries with genealogy section have some of her work if not all. They are a God send! I found my husband's Richard Bird's will with his gr gr grandmother listed and where she lived at the time. We owe much to Ms. Gandrud for all of her hard work. -- Peggy <'}}}}>< Patriotic Tribute http://www.geocities.com/honnoll_honnell/WTC.html Honnoll http://www.geocities.com/honnoll_honnell/index.html Winton http://www.geocities.com/mawpeggy1946/index.html
Hi... A few days ago I ran across a mention of Alabama Records by Pauline Jones Gandrud. Actually, two of the older volumes were up for sale on ebay but my interest was peaked. Where can one find these books? The descriptions seemed to indicate that they contain a myriad of information. Please discuss further!!! Thanks so much!! Bev W.
