    1. [ALTUSCAL] Kay Family
    2. janemc
    3. I am looking for the parents of my GG Grandmother, Emma Malissa Kay Little who was born on Aug. 12, 1862 in Tusculoosa, Ala. I know some of her siblings. She had a little sister named Lucy Kay who was born in Sept. 1865-67 in Ala. Lucy got real sick and ran a high fever and as a result became retarded. Emma looked after Lucy for the rest of her life. Emma had an older brother, Elijah Kay who was born in 1861 in Ala. and there was a sister named Mary Kay who married John Wesley Little. Something happened to their parents and the Kay children were taken in by the Joseph Early Little family. Years later, Emma married their youngest son, Richard Newman Little and her sister, Mary married Richard Newman's older brother, John Wesley Little. The Littles also lived in Alabama but I have them living in Calhoun County when the Civil War broke out. Joseph Early Little and all of his sons except the youngest, Richard, fought for the south in the Civil War. Joseph was from Jackson Co., Georgia before moving to Alabama and the whole family eventually left Alabama and moved to Chickasaw Co., Miss. I found them living there in 1880 when Richard Newman and Emma Kay Little were newly weds. Emma's brother, Elijah Kay was living with them at the time. I had heard that there might be a brother by the name of William Kay also, but I do not know about that for sure. Emma Malissa Kay's oldest child was my great grandmother, Mary Susanna [Mamie] Salina Little Johnson. I know that people tended to name their children after their relatives. I know that the Salina came from Joseph Early Little's wife, Salina Dodson Little, but I don't know where the Mary Susanna came from. I wonder if maybe it came from the Kay family? Could anyone help me with this family? Mary Kay and John Wesley Little continued to live in Miss. and had three children, Joe, Rosa and Johnnie Little. The rest of the Little's moved to Milam Co., Texas and settled there. Emma Kay Little had most all of her children in Houston, Miss. and so they lived there for a while before moving to Texas. Thank you, Jane Little McEndree

    3. Here are some of the charter members that were members of the Sweetwater Primitive Baptist Church in 1824. Sweetwater Primitive Baptist Church was organized on December 8, 1824 in the wells school house by Tyre Landers and G. B. Waldrop. The following were charter members Frances Landers, Clarissa Woodruff, Sara Morgan, Elizabeth Niblet, Precilla Woodruff, Mary Hendrick, Hannah Spralding, Heziah Lawrence, Sarah Schamblee, Margaret Minchem, Cynthy Barnett, Edith McDaniel, Elly Davis, Nancy Henddris, John Hendrix, Elizabeth Doneyhoo, James Donechoo, Thomas Mason, Produnce Wells, James Well, Bodie Waldrop, Benjamin Waldrop, Alsey Waldrop. The first building was erected in 1824 and replaced in 1909. The first minister of the church was James Hale, who served 16 years consecu tively, and an additional 12 years two years later. Located on Pleasant Hill Road betwee Deluth and Lawrenceville, near the corner of Cruse Road, the church today is used as Sweet water Memorial Chapel. The cemetery is relatively well maintained and several graves are decorated with small Confederate flags. The Eli Landers house is seen directly behind the cemetery. Picture show of a new church building...and the cemetery with the Landers house in the back ground. Sweetwater Primitive Baptist Church information sent to me by Faye Johnston and Masrshall Waldrup. 2. Linda Brunner
    3. Jesse Beck and sons William, James and Edom (sometimes E.M.) migrated to Tuscaloosa and Pickens about 1830 (or so). Later, they were joined by sons Jeffrey and Jesse Jr. By 1850, only Jeffrey and Edom remained, and many of their children's marriages are listed in Pauline Gandrud's extracts. Thomas Pate moved to Tuscaloosa at the same time, obtaining land near his daughter Peggy Pate Beck and son-in-law William Beck. Their land was in the northeast part of Pickens county south of Gordo. I have been unable to connect Thomas to better known Pates, such as Charles, Newell, Gilbert et al, but feel certain they are related in some way since Charles and Thomas both came from Morgan County, Ga. It is thought that Charles and Thomas were brothers. Does anyone know who the parents of Newell and Gilbert were? Hoping to connect with other Beck and Pate cousins. Linda

    2. I found this in some records from my research: AL Records-Civil Records 1836-1838 May 18, 1849 NANCY MOORE, widow of MICHAEL MOORE, deceased, his son, Wm. M. MOORE, Admin: Securities: William DOWDLE, NANCY MOORE. Appraisers: WM DOWDLE, PHILLIP SHETTLESWORTH, DAVID LINLEY, JAMES DOWDLE, ROBERT MITCHELL In my search for JAMES MONROE SMITH, SR. & JR.(b. Jan. 1866 Cottondale, Tuscaloosa, AL), my grandfather & great grandfather, I find that these same names again in the SHUTTLESWORTH line -MARY CATHERINE to ANDREW SMITH. I find this strange as PHILLIP SHUTTLESWORTH'S widow, NANCY m. to WILLIAM VANCE raised my grandfather,(Jr). In a letter my grandfather wrote he said he was about 3 years old when he was supposed to be adopted. His father and mother were JAMES MONROE SMITH and MATILDA SMITH. His father died when he was an infant. James didn't know where they lived. In 1935, they were both deceased. Is there something here or is it a coincidence? If anyone finds a clue please let me know. I figured that PHILLIP and MARY CATHERINE'S father were brothers. Didn't I figure correctly? Thanks, Kay

    3. In addition to what Rick said, there is a program, ENVIEWER, which imports GED files and presents them in a viewer format. The program comes in a lite version which is free. I mention this because it is a different format from a genealogy program and is very useful for certain purposes.
