    2. Has anyone used this book in their research? Tuskaloosa's Own: A Short History and Muster Roll of Confederate Units From Tuskaloosa County, AL by Beasey S. Hendrix I ask this because I looked up my ancestor and then got his service record from the state Archives...and the book shows different info. I had wondered if anyone else had that similar experience.

    1. [ALTUSCAL] Partlow, Again
    2. Alice Campbell
    3. I have a great aunt Fannie TURPIN, who was said to have been born retarded circa 1875 and said to have been taken as a child to Partlow to live out her life. She was never a secret in the family, but no one now living knows anything but the information I gave above. I called Partlow, and asked how to go about getting information on her. The lady I talked to said they would not even tell me if she had been a patient until I proved that I was the surviving responsible party. Now we are talking about some one who has been dead for close to a hundred years! The woman I talked to wanted me to send everybody's birth certificates, death certificates, everything. When I mentioned there were no birth certificates when this person was born, she just repeated that I needed to send these things or they wouldn't talk to me. I asked again, I thought politely, if she could just tell me if they had ever had a patient by that name in the late 1800s before I went to all this trouble. No way! I had to prove I was the responsible party. Now, my question. Did I just get a dyspeptic receptionist on a bad morning? Or is this really the law in Alabama? I'd really like to know before I start hauling my files out to the Xerox machine. Thanks, Alice Campbell

    1. [ALTUSCAL] Re: Eavenson Post
    2. Sandra W. Doolittle
    3. Hi Mary, Yes, Evensen Cemtery is linked to the Waldrops . Willis Eavenson was with Green Berry Waldrop in the early 1830s in Harris County,Georgia. They both settled in DeSoto County, Mississippi Green Berry Waldrop is buried in Eavensen Cemetery. The Benjamin , Green Berry and Joseph R. Waldrop are the line I am researching. Eavensen Cemetery is in DeSoto/Tate County It lists the a whole page of names, so anyone that might be looking in the DeSoto/Tate area just might find their family listed. My line of Waldrops are related to the Thorntons, Scotts and Walker and others on that page. I have found my Waldrops on other lists while looking for another member of my family. I researched for my JRW for 8 years and one day I set him aside to help a friend whose family was in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, never thinking to look for JRW there, after a month of helping the friend.....there he(JRW's family) was , his family,(Ezekiel Waldrop Green Berry's brother)they were living in Tuscaloosa , which led to finding my JRW in DeSoto County, Mississippi. My scanner is new and I have to add something for it to work. So, I tried to reply it and also forward it but it didn't work. I send in information to the Waldrop list with other's names, in hopes someone will find their family listed. I will have to go back and check but there was a Waldrop that left Tuscaloosa Alabama, Tuscaloosa County to join the fighting in the Civil Warbv. His group from Alabama all came down with measels and could't leave. When they did leave they had to join a Company from Tenn. So if any one was looking for him in Alabama , he was fighting with Tenn. I will look his name up today and post it. He was a Waldrop. Sandra I was just sharing many names in that area that might help someone. Sandra Mary wrote: >Hi Sandra, >Saw your post, but I'm confused. Is it suppose to be the link to names >of Waldrops.??? >Mary > >

    1. [ALTUSCAL] New to Family History
    2. I'm trying to find information concerning my family that came to Tuscaloosa from VA/TN. I obtained a death certificate for my g-grandfather William Dean. He died in 1943. I tried to get one for my g-grandmother Frances Fugett Dean who died in 1965, but they were unable to locate one for her. I thought it was strange since she died more recently. My g-grandparents lived in Brookwood and are buried at West Brookwood cemetery. I am at a dead end. I cannot locate his parents(David A. Dean and Sarah Kilgore) or where he was born. What would be a next step for me? Thanks for the help, Leslie Dean

    3. I've been reading with interest all about the graves at Bryce Hospital. Does anybody know about Partlow? Family records and legends say that my great aunt Fannie TURPIN was born retarded and was finally placed at Partlow after her father died and her mother could not take care of her. I've been meaning to write them to see if they have any records, but does anybody know if there was/is a graveyard there? Thanks, Alice Campbell

His daughter, Pauline, told me that her mother's father and sister were buried in pauper's graves in Tuscaloosa. I believe his name was George Hall. According to census records, she could have been Nancy, Charsley, Greeny, Cricket, Susey, Jeals or Martha. I found a record of where Charlsey Hall died in Tuscloosa Dec 3, 1919. Could be the correct daughter since it's an unusual name. She would have been 39 years old.......Gail

    3. Hi, Gail. You're welcome. No, there is no shame in being mental ill, From what i was told about my great grandmother being in Bryce, she felt so secure there, that she never wanted to leave, (to i was told that my great grandfather may have been mean to her, havent been confirm, my grandmother wrote about her father being a very good father, of course most of her and sister and brothers were scattered to different relatives, while mother was in Bryce. really became ill after having her last child, I would think she had that Post Partimum Depression (PPD) i think i said this right. and one of her son's was born kind of disfigured, and had a mine of child has he gotten older, but i was told he was pretty smart, i would guess, no thought he couldnt learn so, why bother teaching him, but my grandmother went to livingston college to become a teacher, and she had taught him a few things.....he too was in Bryce for being disfigured and mind of a child......I was told that my great grandmother had fallen when she was pregnant with him....that is how he became the way he was.... My grandmother spent time in Bryce, she lost a 5 year daughter in a fire. and never really over came it......she went in after her husband died in 1969 - early 1970's.....her daughter died in 1930's.... I am hoping to get my father and my aunt to go with me and help me to optain some medical records of my grandmother, brother and mother, to see what they were treated for..... kim ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 02, 2002 3:27 PM Subject: [ALTUSCAL] Re: ALTUSCAL-D Digest V02 #29 > Thanks KM, > > Thanks for posting the Bryce Hospital Graves. 3. Thanks for letting us know about the article. As a nursing student in the late 60's I spent 3 months at Bryce - it was a great experience for most of us as well as having great food, beautiful spring weather, etc. Often we would walk thru the back field to the cemetery; sometimes take a picnic lunch to eat there. This was, of course, before the road was built so most of the markers were still there. Even then it was in disrepair, mostly with grass, etc. Think I have a picture of it. So glad its being restored.
