I want to thank everyone that responded to my email, I tried to thank everyone individually but in case I missed one, thanks to all for your help, I now have information that the brother Solon Crain had been living in Tuscaloosa working for the E-Z opener bag company since December 1928 and then married Beulah Thompson July 6th 1929 in Clinton, Greene County and continued to live in Tuscaloosa after the marriage, I have still been unable to find out if they moved after 1944, or when Maurice came to live with his brother and what happened to him, but hoping can find some kind of record soon. Does anyone know if there are city directories available? Jean Hello, I am needing help, I have been looking for a Maurice McCord Crain for about six years now, I have finally found his father and have his obit that states in 1944 his son Maurice was living in Tuscaloosa Alabama, this is the first clue I have gotten as to the where abouts of Maurice. I am needing to know what kind of resources are available to find out how long Maurice was here and any clue as to where he might have gone, he might have even died here also will need to know where to find these resources. I have not done any research in Alabama so not sure where to start, I know some states are really hard to research records in this time frame without being directly related. Maurice was my grandmothers first husband that abandoned her and his kids. I am trying to find out what happened to him for my aunt (his daughter), my uncle has already died, so hoping to find him before something happens to my aunt. He was born in 1906 in Illinois, I think he died in 1960 but do not know for sure or where. I do know in Illinois he worked as a electrician, so probably also had a job here as a electrician. According to his fathers obit, he also had a brother Solon Crain that was also living here in October 1944. any help would be appreciated. Jean Rowcliffe in Colorado

Hi... Looking for information on the family of Gertrude Brown, who married Peter Harris in Tuscaloosa in 1947. I believe that there was daughter Dorothy. Our family connects to the Harris line. Thanks, Bev W.
In regard to the information request by Leland Hamner about the Columbian Institute, I recently ran across an article about it and its successor, the Pelham Institute, in Transactions of the Alabama Historical Society, 1897-1898, Vol. II, pp. 60-66. According to the opening of the article, which was written by Levin Vinson Rosser, who attended it (as did my great grandfather, Joe B. Eddins and a number of his children), the Columbian Institute was located at Taylorville, "four and a half miles south of the county seat, at the forks of the Greensboro and Centreville public roads. Here, on the east side and some two hundred yards from the former road, and immediately on the north side of the latter, is a shady grove, mostly of forest oaks, and gently sloping southward to the road. This formed the front lawn and study-ground." The article goes on to describe the layout of the Institute. It closes with a list of attendees, admittedly imperfect. Hamners listed as attending the Columbian Institute are: Sam, Jack, Pickens, and Henley Those Hamners attending its successor, Pelham Institute, are: Sam, John, Lizzie, Mary and Mattie Hope this helps. Dear List mates: Please join us for another Monday night of Alabama ancestor hunting! http://huntsville.about.com/mpchat.htm 9 pm Eastern; 8 pm Central If it's been awhile, please stop by and register your SURNAMES again for the chat transcripts. Most people only read the latest ones--but lots of people have found their cousins through the transcripts.....so I'll continue to publish them as long as they're helping people! Don't miss out on the fun and the possibility of finding your lost family members. I have last Monday's chat transcripts posted. Please take time to look them over and see if YOUR cousin showed up: http://huntsville.about.com/library/blalchat.htm If you've never been to a chat before and need instructions, or you'd like to be on a reminder list, just send me an email. This was sent previously to the TNLCT list back in Feb. Dick Stewart Colorado =-=-=-=-= For those interested in Mullins, according to the The Handbook of Texas Online: Veribest, TX. is on the Farm Road 380 eleven miles east of San Angelo in eastern Tom Green County. Isaac "Ike" Mullins, who came to the county some time before 1875, gave the land for a school and the Mullins Cemetery, where he is buried. Mullins Crossing on the Concho River still bears the Mullins name. The community of Mullins developed into a town in the early 1900s, but when C. A. Roberson applied for a post office in 1926, there was already a town in Texas with that name. A new name, Veribest, was chosen...... This from the Texas State Historical Association. My gg-grandfather, Henley Wingfield Hamner, attended a boarding school, Columbian Institute, in Taylorville, before the War Between the States. It was founded and run by Edward Tarrant (who later formed and commanded an artillery unit). Is anyone familiar with this school? Surely it's gone by now, but I thought someone may have some information on it. Also, I understand there is a Hamner Cemetery in Taylorville. Any information, such as directions, would be greatly appreciated. I am planning a pilgrimage back to the ancestral homelands later this month, and this will be one of my main stops. Thanks, Leland Hamner Texas
I am trying to verify or disprove a family story, and could use a little help. The story is that my gggrandmother and her family lived across a river from the nearest town. She was not allowed to go into town for parties or dances, so she used to wait until the coast was clear, then swim the river with her clothes tied on top of her head. She would return home the same way. There was a ferry crossing the river, but since her brothers ran the ferry, she didn't dare try to take that. I am interested in finding more about this ferry and about her family. Here is what information I have been able to find about my gggrandmother and her family: Wiley Watson b. July 13, 1800 SC d. March 3, 1852, m. Mildred ? (Milly)b. November 17, 1802, d. January 9, 1852. They had 8 children: Hezekiah Watson b. Jan. 31, 1826 Amaziah Watson b. Apr. 18, 1828 Lilly Asbury Watson (a man) b. May 20, 1831 Lewis B. Watson b. Mar. 17, 1833 Martha Jane Watson (my gggrandmother) b. Feb. 15, 1836 Melissa C. Watson b. Sept. 24, 1837 Albert Newton Watson b. Nov. 18, 1840 William Wiley Watson b. Jul. 18, 1842 The above information conflicts a bit with the following census, and I am not sure which is correct: 1850 Fed. Census Tuscaloosa County, AL, Household # 797 Wiley Watson 40 M Farmer Birthplace: SC b. 1810 Milly 40 F Birthplace: SC b. 1810 Amaziah 22 M Farmer Birthplace: SC b. 1828 Lilly 19 M Farmer Birthplace: SC b. 1831 Lewis 17 M Farmer Birthplace: SC b. 1833 Martha J. 16 F Birthplace: AL b. 1834 Mary Ann 15 F Birthplace: AL b. 1835 Albert 10 M Birthplace: AL b. 1840 William 8 M Birthplace: AL b. Does anyone have any information about this family or the ferry they might have run? Does anyone know about any ferries that were run on any rivers in Tuscaloosa County? Thanks so much in advance. This is a great list.... Janet Graham Theberge

Hello List, My ggggrandfather Joel Rogers married Sarah (Sally) Norred on September 26, 1822 in Bibb County. There were only a couple Rogers in Bibb Co. on the 1820 census...Joel and Jesse Rogers. Tuscaloosa Co., which is next door to Bibb Co., had some Rogers and I believe there was even a Rogers homestead at one time. Would anyone happen to know if Joel Rogers was related to any of the Rogers in Tuscaloosa Co.? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Eileen Rogers Mullins nemullins@msn.com
