Please every one help Mike Sullivan in his effort to get some thing done about the records stored in the 7th floor of the Tuscaloosa county courthouse. He needs for each of you to write Ed Bridges of the Dept. of Archives and History and the Alabama Historical Commission in Montgomery, AL to help clean the records located here. He also needs help from you in cleaning the records. The Archives has said that they could send four people to help do this. They most likely have some training in doing this type of cleaning of public records. This project is long over due so please help us save our oldest Tuscaloosa county records for our future generation. Beasey Hendrix, Jr.
Please give your support and help to the 7th floor of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse project for saving the old county records. Mike Sullivan is in charge. The morning group of the Thursday Genealogy needs to help. Beasey Hendrix, Jr.
Dear Friends, I write you tonight as a report and a request for help with the preservation of the 7th floor records at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse. So far, everything I've done should be viewed as investigative. On this list, there was a report that the 7th floor was closed to the public. This was immediately laid to rest by another report that checking with courthouse officials proved this was not true. I knew little of the conditions and procedures necessary needed to do research of these historic records but did advise members of this list that the 7th floor should be looked at as a remote location and that a request to go up there should be made before arriving at the courthouse. This is very important to anyone living out of town. Yes, it is true that there are laws that require that all public records be available for public examination and citizens be allowed to copy these records. As written before, no one should use this to wag a finger at any official if there is a delay in your request. It can not be stressed enough that everyone should conduct themselves in a friendly manner and I'm certain anything can be worked out. In the last month, I've toured the 7th floor twice and plan to return again this week. So far, I've discovered mold on some of these records and courthouse officials as well as ADAH has been notified and ADAH is working to get dehumidifiers up there. On 09 Sept 04, a meeting with Mr. R. L. Guffin, President of the Tuscaloosa Genealogy Night Group, myself and the new Circuit Court Clerk Fran Brazeal, where a request was made for permission to clean these records and remove them to a better environmentally friendly area of the courthouse. That request was not accepted for some good reasons. I'm happy to say that Ms. Brazeal is also into genealogy so will be understanding of our concerns. She could not meet our request because at this time, she has no budget for this. It must be accepted that with Gov. Riley's budget cuts, our court system is suffering. Also, things of this nature need to be planned for. I am happy to say that in a call to Tracey Berezansky, who is the Assistant Director for ADAH, told me that ADAH can send a crew to assist in mold removal. It is my hope that this can be done in late October. There may be delays because of damage from IVAN to other courthouses and archives. On 07 Oct 04, I will be requesting that the Tuscaloosa Genealogy Society Night Group adopt this as an official project of the Society and I already know a few of it's members will help with this clean up. I also want everyone to know that Ms. Brazeal allowed "The Tuscaloosa News" to tour the 7th floor and take photos for a coming article in the "News". This is proof enough that Ms. Brazeal will be as helpful as possible but her hands are truly tied at the moment. That "News article" is being written by reporter Stephanie Taylor that tells me it is scheduled to be printed in this Sat. paper. Please look for it. You can do this on-line. I have begged her to be positive and upbeat with this article because the conditions on the 7th floor is something that has evolved over time and that no one person is to be blamed for it. Mr. Clark Center, Director of the Special Collections Library of the U. of A. has told me that I need public awareness for public support to be successful in this project. It is true that local officials will spend local money on local concerns. That is where you can help. You must show your support by writing and calling others to alert them to this project and show their support for it. You can do this by merely replying to this post. I will provide my e-mail address but encourage everyone to post messages on this list. So there you have it. Many have known of this problem for quite something. I am bringing it to light once again. Now is the time for you to support it. Please don't let these historic records (Now discovered to date back to 1817, two years before Alabama became a state.) down. Take care. Bye, Mike [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>
Hi, I am looking for information on a John Wesley Woods born about 1880/1881 possibly in Alabama who had sister Lizzie Clementine Woods and brother Charley Woods who's parents (names unknown) died and they were raised by an Uncle Will Douglas who moved them into Oktibbeha County, Miss. Am looking for information on their parent's names, town or area they were from -- really any information at all. Thanks. --Cindy Woods ([email protected])

Do any of you out there know where the William Neel home place and cemetery located about one-half (1/2) mile southeast of the Bethel Baptist Church in Ralph, Tuscaloosa, Alabama on the road that leads to US Highway 11 south. This would have been about in 1830 - 45. I am trying to help Tommy Knox, 201 W. Craig Pl, Apt K, San Antonia, TX 78212 to locate his family home place and cemetery. I would go to the Tuscaloosa County Court House and probate judge's office and look up the book that has the property owners name and who they bought or sold that property to. He knows the names of the Neels and dates that are buried in the Neel Cemetery. He needs to know the location of where the neel property is located near Ralph, Alabama. Can any of you please help him? I would but I'm just not able as I have been sick and in the hospital so many times since last summer. Thanks, Beasey, Jr.

In a message dated 9/14/2004 11:01:13 PM US Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Tom, I have held back from writing you regarding Friday's meeting in the Tuscaloosa County Probate Office because the last time I saw Mrs. Prewitt, she wasn't sure if she would be available. I just called her and she told me your Probate Judge Conference has been rescheduled. Is it possible that this Mrs. Prewitt's husband is descended from William Prewitt and Elizabeth Winchester Prewitt? My gggrandmother is Mary 'Polly' Prewitt who was born in Tennessee in 1811 and married to Willoughby Winchester. They lived in Tuscaloosa County in the middle 1800s, and their closest neighbor in one of the census was William Prewitt who is shown in the Tuscaloosa County Marriage Records to have married Elizabeth Winchester. I have not been able to find out anything else about Mary 'Polly' Prewitt Winchester and would appreciate any information. Travis Wilson Gilbert, AZ
Tom, I have held back from writing you regarding Friday's meeting in the Tuscaloosa County Probate Office because the last time I saw Mrs. Prewitt, she wasn't sure if she would be available. I just called her and she told me your Probate Judge Conference has been rescheduled. As it was, Fran Brazeal, Circuit Court Clerk is scheduled to be in Juvenile Court all day on the 17th, so your chance to meet her on that day was very slim. Our meeting with her was very friendly but in my point of view, not very well. I think she will be open to any records being included with the loose papers project but regarding removing any records from the 7th floor, she said she had no budget nor authorization for secondary space. Simply put, she was not against any preservation project but said that we would have to see Judge Hardy McCollum for money and space. Mark Scogin has told me the case load in his law firm will not allow him to work on this project for at least three weeks. This seems to fit with your rescheduled Probate Conference. Hopefully we can see Judge McCollum then or at the very least we have a meeting, with possible tour of the 7th floor to make some plans. It will be so important that we speak with one voice. I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that I have always supported the loose papers project and always will. This project is a huge step in the right direction towards preservation of county records. That is my goal, to have as many county records as possible preserved and accessible by anyone in Tuscaloosa County. This goal may be reached using many avenues and the loose papers project is one that I will never interfere with. The preservation of the 7th floor records need and deserve immediate attention. These records should be viewed as historic in nature. Mold has been discovered on this records, so they are in a state of decay. This decay will continue until storage conditions are upgraded. With Fall approaching, temperatures will be conducive for any work on the 7th floor that require long hours to be done. This season also signals that winter is around the corner, which in Alabama, is traditionally a wet season. It must be accepted not only is now the time to do something to save our historic records but face the fact that there is no reason not too. Mr. Turley, please keep these records in mind as ADAH adopts it's new budget. Let me say again that with a unified voice we can all achieve our goals. Thank you. Regards, Mike

Hello to everyone, To read a true story of counterfeiters in Winston (then Walker) and Tuscaloosa Counties, go to my Winston site at http://wcgs.ala.nu Once there, click on the "Stories (And People)" link, and then scroll down to "Counterfeiters in Winston County." This story comes from William R. Smith's Reminiscences of a Long Life. An interesting note not included in this story is that Mr. Smith knew the exact spot (within a few feet) of where the hanging took place but decided not to include it in his book. He stated that only a few people, if any, were still alive who remembered where it was; he was an eye-witness to this event that happened in 1822. His book was published in 1889. Thanks, Peter J.
