    3. Good Morning ! Thank you for asking about the Alabama Genealogical Society. The following announcement concerns one of two seminars held by AGS. The Spring seminar is held in May in Birmingham, AL, on the Birmingham Southern College campus and the Fall seminar in October in Montgomery, AL. You are cordially invited to come ! The registration form includes membership information. Charlotte Tucker ctucker@dbtech.nt Member of the Program Planning Committee Alabama Genealogical Society ============================================= Make your plans now to attend the Fall Seminar in Montgomery, AL, on Saturday, October 20, 2001. We will explore the two primary overland routes used to move into the area which is now known as Alabama. An excellent panel of knowledgeable speakers will present a program on the two primary overland routes (the Federal Road and the Huntsville Road) used by pioneers to move into the area now known as Alabama. The Federal Road was a major influence in the settlement of the Mississippi Territory during the period between the Louisiana Purchase and the removal of the Creek Indians. In 1806 a horsepath for postal riders through a malaria-infested wilderness was opened through the Creek Nation, stretching from middle Georgia to coastal Alabama. It was widened into a military road starting in 1811 in anticipation of the War of 1812, running from Fort Wilkinson near Milledgeville, GA to Fort Stoddert at the Mount Vernon Landing on the Mobile River, just east of present day Mount Vernon, AL. The Federal Road carried thousands of pioneers and directly contributed to the dramatic increase in Alabama's population between 1810 and 1820. The Huntsville Road was the main thoroughfare for settlers coming from the Tennessee Valley into Alabama, running from Huntsville through Blountsville, Jonesborough and Bucksville into Tuscaloosa. Mr. James H. Walker, Jr., author of "Roupes Valley," will present his Huntsville Road research. Three speakers on the Federal Road are being provided by Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, Inc., which manages a collection of 40 restored 19th century buildings in Montgomery. They are Mark Dauber, Dr, Craig Mann and Jeffrey C. Benton. Please contact Jyl Hardy, President, jylhardy@bellsouth.net for additional registration information.

Peggy Sue: RootsWeb's mailing lists only pass text content, not attachments. Therefore, you cannot get a virus from list mail. But, you could receive a virus from an infected fellow listmember -- sent directly to your e-mail address and not through the list itself. And, if you have your e-mail address on a web page, you're vulnerable there. The newer viruses (SirCam for example) are sending mail out to addresses found in the web-page cache. One must exercise due dilligence in keeping anti-virus software up to date and running regular virus scans. The alternates are simple -- get infected or give up on the Internet. Regards, Elsi

I have McAfee virus scan and it caught the viruses, but my computer has been e-mailing people on the list. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I haven't been able to clean or delete them. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Lillie Farley

    2. I also received these attachments from a P. F. Francher email address was pf107@mindspring.com I am assuming that this person does not know that they have the virus on their computer. I received 5 attachments, 2 of the same file. I did not download the attachments because it looked like a virus to me. It tries to trick you by making you think this person is sending you a reply. These emails had messages in them that I had posted with Bibb Co., AL list and Tusc. Co., AL list. This person must be on both lists. The attachments I received were named HUMOR.TXT.pif, README.TXT.pif, news_doc.scr and New-Napster_Site.Doc.scr. There are probably others. Another clue is at the bottom of these messages it will say >take a look to the Attachment. So beware of these attachments. And another thing, I don't know about other ISP's but with AOL if you delete these emails you need to go to mail and then go to recently deleted mail and permanently delete these emails. You don't want anyone to accidentally download these files to your computer. Phoebe Forister
