I have a document that was obviously misfiled in my ancestors estate case file. Due to the handwriting I will not try to transcribe it but will give an abstract. Your petitioner, William A. Vestal...in the custody of....dept sheriff...directing him to arrest your petitioner to answer a bill of indictment, found by the grand jury... that said bill charges your petitioner and his wife Catherine Vestal with the crime of harboring deserters from the army of the confederate states of America which offense is a felony by the statutes of the state of Alabama....23 October 1864 William and Catherine are in the following census: 1850 Campbell Cty, GA 1860 Tallapoosa Cty, AL [he's a physician] 1870 Tallapoosa Cty, AL [I didn't look for any others] I can't help but wonder what became of the charges.
I, also, am not related to these Vestals; however, I "think" the descendants were in Elmore County, Ala. and migrated in the late 1880s, maybe early 1890s to Union County, Arkansas, where many of the descendants live today around Strong (Union County) Arkansas. They probably do not even know about this!
