John Holley moved to Tallapoosa County before 1836. He was a politician who served 5 different terms in the Alabama legislature (1839, 1845, 1847, 1859, and 1861). He married twice & his wives were sisters. Matilda's mother was his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Morgan (born about 1815 in Georgia and died after 1850 in Tallapoosa County), daughter of Jesse Morgan and Elizabeth Arnold. John & Elizabeth married 9 sept. 1830 in Walton county, Georgia. John Jefferson Holley was a slave owner. According to census records, he owned 23 slaves in 1850 and 35 slaves in 1860. I am descended from one of Matilda's brothers, James Monroe Holley, born 31 March, 1841 in Tallapoosa County, and died 20 June 1927, in Limestone county, Texas. He and his family followed Matilda and her family to Limestone county. He lived near the current tow! n of Coolidge. I have more information about the family if your are interested. I would be pleased to answer any e-mail.
