Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SU.2ADI/589.590.947.1 Message Board Post: I am searching for info on my great-grandfather Oliver Mathis (d 1939). According to my mother, he had red hair and a temper! The family name was Matthews before coming to this country (from England?). He was married to Hattie Matilda Lockwood (her family came from England) and their children were Lola (d ~1974), Carrie (d <1934), and Elmer Lesley Mathis (1889-1950) who was my grandfather and died before I was born. Oliver had a brother but I don't know his name. I found a grandson of the brother who said his family came from TN. Elmer married Gladys Goldie Skinner and they lived in IL because that's where my mother was born and grew up.

I have only recently begun geological research spurred by the controversy over the lineage of Elizabeth Davie who is NOT the daughter of Gov. Wm. Richardson Davie according to my research. But it is the Kimbrough/Douthet ancestry that I have found fascinating -royal?? or another mistake? Please let me hear from you..is Peggy your mother?? I have lost track of the Alabama Thornton's since my great uncle Edward's death.

    3. My John Davis and wife Rachel Greer were living in Tallapoosa Co, Ala. in 1850 and descendants continued to live there until today. But Rachel's parents Joseph and Priscilla Greer lived in the SW corner of Chambers Co, Ala. and were buried at New Harmony Presbyterian Church Cemetery. John Davis's son John Daniel Davis b.1832 SC and his wife Frances Morris Rush named his only son JOHN BELL DAVIS - HE DIED IN 1949 IN JACKSON GAP, ALA (Tallapoosa Co) I noticed in the 1860 Chambers Co, Ala census there was a JANE BELL b.1796 SC with probably daughters Rebecca, Rachel, Mary living with her. Does anyone know if she could be related to my DAVIS family??? Also, Rachel Greer Davis had a sister Frances who married Allen L. Bailey who lived in the next household in 1860. Wonder if the Bell family could be related to my DAvis or Greer family. Janice Barnett Craft

    3. THANK YOU!!!! That was a quick reply! I wanted to thank him for compiling the newspaper articles from Tallapoosa Co, Ala newspaper. I found a notice where my grandparents, Robert A. Barnett and Elizabeth Davis, married 1883 at the home of her parents. My grandparents left Tallapoosa Co about 1885 driving their oxen to Texas. Stopped overnight close to Newton, Miss. and some going back east from Texas talked them out of going. So they just went north of where they were camping and stayed the rest of their lives. Grandpa went to Shamrock, Texas about 1905 to buy some land. We don't know WHY he went there! Must have been relatives living there. But who???? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debra Crosby" <poohbos@poohbos.com> To: <ALTALLAP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 6:30 AM Subject: RE: [AL-TALLAPOOSA] Larry Caver's email address > Hi Janice, > His address is Lecaverjr@aol.com > > For any who are not aware of it you can browse > through the archived messages from this list > at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ALTALLAP > or you can do searches from the archived > messages at > http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=ALTALLAP > > > Debra Crosby > > -----Original Message----- > From: Janice Craft [mailto:tombstone1@bellsouth.net] > Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 12:18 PM > To: ALTALLAP-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [AL-TALLAPOOSA] Larry Caver's email address > > I failed to write down Larry's email address.
