    1. Re: [AL-TALLAPOOSA] Abbott
    2. Thanks, I do have that information, but not yet able to decide which JJ he is. There was also a JJ Abbott who enlisted 11/16/1864 into the Home Guard Branch of the Tallapoosa County Militia Regimental Unit. His Company's Unit name was "Young's Mounted Infantry. At the time of his enlistment he was 17. If I'm correct on my JJ's birthdate (1839) he would have been 25, so doubt he's the one above. There was a Jordan Abbott, Private, Co. B 4th Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters There was a JJ Abbott Co. H, 59th Regiment, Georgia Vo. Infantry There was a J Abbett and a JJ Abbett, both from Georgia, died in Civil War, buried in VA. I tend to think mine (if he served) was in entered service in Alabama. I will go to the ADAH site and see if I can find the one you sent. I need his age. I had printed a list off the net of Alabama Confed Soldiers named Abbott. The one you mentioned was the only JJ, on it, but I know there were others (see above). I will look some more and also enter Abbett since the name was also spelled that way as well at Abbot, Abott, etc. Thanks again for the info. I'll keep on keeping on. Laura in Alabama

    1. Re: [AL-TALLAPOOSA] Abbott
    2. Hi Becky, Thanks for the quick response. I do have some info on the Cardens and their relationship to the Abbotts. I show Thomas J. Abbott married Mary Carden and one of their children was a Jourden/Jordan Abbott b. ca 1828. However, my JJ Abbott was born in 1839 and died in 1869. Can't help but believe they were related, however. Unless Jordan was just a particularly popular name for two or three generations of Abbotts.... I just don't have anything that connects my JJ with anyone in particular. I would love to take a leap of faith, but realize I do need some sort of documentation. Guess I'll head to the Tallapoosa County Courthouse one day and see if I can dig up anything there. Think of me if you hear anything new. Thanks again, Laura

    3. Laura, I know of these Abbotts, and they did come from Pike Co. Ga., along with the Shockley's. Some of these Abbott's, married some Carden's. My GGGrandfather was an O.H.R. or Owen N.K. Carden, from Pike Co. Ga., and I have information on some Carden's from there, and there was a Jordan Abbott. I know that some did marry Carden's from Pike Co. Ga. My Owen, was in Tallapoosa Co. after leaving Pike Co. Ga. He died during the Civil War, and his wife Nancy McLeod Carden, was in Randolph Co. Al. in 1870, and then in Chambers Co. Al. in 1880. 2. Trying to find information on my great-great-grandfather, JJ Abbott from Tallapoosa County, AL. I know there are several JJ's and Jordans and Jeffersons, all with Abbott last names, but have yet to find any background on my J.J. I believe his name is Jordan Jefferson as his marriage certificate to my great-grandmother, Sarah Jane Whatley states he was Jordan J. As an adult, my great-grandmother (his daughter) reported his name to be Jefferson Abbott. The odd thing is that she named one of her sons (my grandfather) Judson Jefferson. So maybe he was actually a Judson, not Jordan. (Confused? I am). Anyway, marriage records show Jordan J. Abbott married Sarah Jane Whatley on Dec. 27, 1867 in Tallapoosa County, AL. Their daughter, my great-grandmother Frances Josephine was born February 2,. 1868. Looks like they married just a couple of months before "Josie" was born. Wonder if was a forced marriage or birthdates off. However, the 1870 census shows Only Sarah Abbott and Josie age 2 in the household, so 1868, probably right...month could be wrong. I wonder though if it was a forced marriage to give Josie legitimacy and then maybe they divorced...hence Sarah living alone with Josie. My grandmother, later known as Fannie, rather than Josie, reported her father died of Typhoid. So perhaps that's what actually happened. There was a John Jordan Abbott/Abbett son of John Ezekial Abbett and Mary Elizabeth Shockley who migrated from GA to Tallapoosa Co, AL.. This JJ Abbott died in Jackson's Gap from a cerebral hemmorhage in 1936. In 1882 he married Sarah Elizabeth Duck. Possibly they were kin to my JJ. There was also a Jordan A. Abbott b. ca 1845, son of James D. Abbott and Frances Belcher. So Jordan was obviously a popular Abbott name! Hope to hear from someone.
