    3. Julie, I think I am missing something. Is this James R. in this message the one for whom you are looking for some guardianship papers, estate settlement or something? On page 2 of the Modified Register for William Lowe Mason, mentions William married Virginia A. Sparks, daughter of James "Jim" Sparks & Susan Harbin or Downs ---- Virginia was born 25 Mar 1842 in AL etc. I see on page 3 that Virginia is on 1850 census in Missouri with John Price & Georgeana Price. But what confuses me is before that on the 1860 Saline Co., MO census showing Virgini Sparks age 7 with her parents James M. & Mrs. M. R. Sparks. IS THIS NOT THE ONE FOR WHOM YOU ARE LOOKING FOR PAPERS IN TALLAPOOSA CO., AL? I may have misunderstood (but heck I am 71 yrs old & have earned the right to misunderstand things, huh?) Sorry to be so complicated, but I am very interested in this family. Thanks for sharing with me. 3. Corporal James R. Scott of Company A, 47th Alabama Infantry, died during the war, date and place unknown or at least unrecorded in his Confederate service records from the National Archives. They were usually pretty good about noting in the records people who were killed in action, which leds me to believe he probably died from sickness. A pension record for his widow (if he had one) might provide more detail. I also find it interesting that Joe Stewart named his daughter Elizabeth. John Holley moved to Tallapoosa County before 1836. He was a politician who served 5 different terms in the Alabama legislature (1839, 1845, 1847, 1859, and 1861). He married twice & his wives were sisters. Matilda's mother was his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Morgan (born about 1815 in Georgia and died after 1850 in Tallapoosa County), daughter of Jesse Morgan and Elizabeth Arnold. John & Elizabeth married 9 sept. 1830 in Walton county, Georgia. John Jefferson Holley was a slave owner. According to census records, he owned 23 slaves in 1850 and 35 slaves in 1860. 3. The 1855 census for Tallapoosa that is shown is not complete. It stops with the Wiley Williams. At the AL archives in Montgomery they have the complete one on file. The lady at the archives stated the 1850 Federal census and 1855 State census was completely messed up. Several of the names were left off. I can verify this as some of my decedents were left off and I know for a fact they were living there in the Daviston area of Tallapoosa Co. We went page by page and never found them or others we were searching for. "Motley; Cotney; Wright; Funderburk; Yates; Milam" Respectfully yours, Pat Wright Newton Canyon Lake, TX

    2. Gosh, I live only about 10 miles from one edge of Morgan County, and I never knew any Holleys were there at all. My surname isn't Holley, but I descend from Robert Wicker (from Virginia) who married Hannah Simmons Holley (of Bertie County, North Carolina). I think some of the Holleys wound up in Cape Giradeau County, Missouri. I am pretty sure that Hannah's father was Nathaniel Holley. I have so many names running around in my head they get sort of scrambled at times. lol Robert was the son of Thomas Wicker (m. Mary Hester), Thomas's father was Benjamin Wicker. They were in New Kent County, Virginia and Greenville County, NC. Thomas Oscar Wicker came over around 1695. But your mention of Native American lines was very interesting to me. However, it has always been in my father's lines that we thought it possible. The Holleys are my mother's. I do find a John Holley in my records, but I am not sure if he is a Georgia Holley. There is a William, I believe. Mine, however, came here to Georgia after the Revolutionary War I am pretty sure. If any of these names seem familiar to you, let me know. Patricia in Georgia

    3. Matilda C. Holley is the daughter of John J. Holley and Elizabeth Ann Morgan. John J. Holley is the son of Howell and Elizabeth Ann Holley. John was born in Georgia; Howell, his father was born in Tennessee. Elizabeth Ann Morgan was the daughter of Jesse Morgan and Elizabeth Arnold. The Morgans came to Tallapoosa County from Morgan County, Georgia. I have a listing of all of John J. Holley's siblings. If I can be of further help, let me know.
