    3. A Story To Live By My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip. This is lingerie." He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. "Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is the occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion." I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister's family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn't seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special. I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my life. I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor, not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them. I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing. I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party-going friends'. "Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would have done had she known that she wouldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing-I'll never know. It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good Friends whom I was going to get in touch with-someday. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write-one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is...a gift from God.

    1. Murphy's Law for Genealogists
    2. Helene and Marion Pockrus
    3. Thought this was worth passing on. Have you seen "Murphy's law for genealogists"? The public ceremony in which your distinquished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. When at last after much hard work you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that" You grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for for four years was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time. You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then. The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames. John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at age 10. Your gr grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by a another genealogist. The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share. The only record you find for your gr grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency. The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war. The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. The spelling fo your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronounciation. None of the pictures in your recently deceased grmother's photo album have names written on them. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued or was named in wills. You learn that your great aunt's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City" Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. The 37 volume, sixteen thousand page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. You finally find your gr grandparent's wedding records and discover that the brides' father was named John Smith. from South Bay Cities genealogical Society ==== HANCOCK Mailing List ==== Additional sites to post your HANCOCK data can be found at: http://home.texoma.net/~mmcmullen/index.html and click on HANCOCK.

    2. Granny4you
    3. Hi Rooters, This is a little off the normal roots subject but I feel it will be helpful to all those people that aren't able to get to a major library or National Archives. The granny's are a group of elderly ladies that look up genealogy for others, for as little as $2.50. They go to the National Archives in Denver, or the Denver Public Library almost everyday of the week. It keeps them busy and they enjoy helping others. The monies they get they either spend on lunches or parking or purchasing CD's or microfiche to continue with their research. I first sent a letter for them to the NYC root-l mailing list and they got quite a response. We also had other retired folks expressing their interest in helping with the on going tasks, so we are extending their help to others. My name is Jim, and I am one of the granny's sons. I do the computer work for them. If your looking for some help, give these ladies a try. They will do you a good job. We are looking for other retired folks around the country that would like to participate with the granny's in their local research. Local directories are a great source for finding people and the grannies get a lot of requests of that nature. I have set them up this E-mail address of granny4you@aol.com on my account. Sincerely, Jim (the cheap labor for the granny's---haha) but glad to help.

    3. Hi Terry, I descend from Jesse C. Knight's brother Henry Knight. We Knight researchers know so little about our Knights that we have collected information on all lines in hopes of stumbling into some great piece of evidence. The information that I have below basically came form the will of Jesse C. Knight who died in Tallapoosa CO AL. His will was filed the 14 day of July 1890 The will named the following children, viz: M. H. Hancock, wife of A. M. Hancock, Missouri Boulware, wife of F. M. Boulware, Jesse C. Knight, Charles D. Knight, James D. Knight all of whom are over the age of 21 years and reside in this county; and your petitioner (W. H. Knight); and the following grandchildren, children Francis Adair deceased, viz: Thomas Adair, Fitchie Adair, Jimmie Adair, all over 14 years of age, C. F. Adair, Tempie Adair and Sallie Adair, Mary Adair all under 14 years of age. All of said minors reside in said county and in the custody of their father George W. Adair. 3. Hi all The above names are my mysteries. I can get to a certain point and then it becomes twilight zone time. Aaron Clifton dob abt 1812. He married an Indian Woman, I don't know her name, dob or tribe. If anyone can tell me how to find out you would earn my eternal thanks. They had 3 children Sarah Agnes dob 1852, Ida dob 1836 and Bert dob 1853. Aaron married a second time, no name given for 2nd wife, and they had a daughter named Mary dob 1857. I believe they lived mainly in Blount Co. Alabama but I don't know where Aaron or his wife were born and I haven't been able to find any Cliftons in an 1830 census for Blount Co. Sarah married James Alexander Webb in 1878. James Alexander Webb, dob 11-2-1853, in Cherokee Co. Alabama. One record says Cherokee Co. Ga. His parents were said to be from Georgia. He married Sarah Agnes Clifton on 2-7-1878. James was a Methodist Preacher and he and his family moved to Texas and Oklahoma. James died in Kaw City, Oklahoma on 6-10-1922. James is suppose to have had at least one sister named Florence, born in Georgia. The parents of James and Florence, whoever they are, are suppose to have been buried in Alabama. Thomas James Marion Bullard dob 1849. I don't know where. He married Rebecca Bynum, dob 1853, in 1877. Rebecca's parents were Asa Bynum and Elizabeth Bynum, daughter of John Bynum and Betsy Clowdus. Rebecca was born in Mississippi. Any information on Bynum and Clowdus would be appreciated. Thomas and Rebecca had 3 children. They were Parker Dometis dob 10-1-1878, Lula dob 1880 and James Lester. Parker married Laura Omma Webb, daughter of James and Sarah Webb. The Nixsons are said to be from Alabama. One daughter Cary Lou Trilla, dob 1-24-1872, was born in Louisiana near the Texas border while the family was moving from Alabama to Texas. Another daughter Elizabeth, dob 11-1-1874, was born in Quitman Texas. There was an older son John, but I have little information about him before Texas. My last surname is William Thomas Tolbert. The first information I have about him is in Texas. One of his sons Thomas Jefferson, dob 1857, was born in Texas. Another son Andrew Jackson, dob 8-18-1870, married Cary Lou Trilla Nixson and they raised a family near Greenville, Hunt Co., Texas. The only other Tolbert I have is Lee Tolbert. I don't know if he was a son or brother of William. Lee fought in the Civil War. The reason I am including this surname is because I am sure there are ties to Alabama or Georgia. If anyone can help me with these surnames I will be saying thank you for many a year. Jenny Lee Tolbert seminole46@juno.com
