It may be that there were sales by Solomon's brothers, just later in time than the deed books I checked. For what it's worth, I found nothing on my Pattersons in the area, either, beyond the land purchases from the government. No sales, no wills. Perhaps probate settlements when there was no will were not recorded in the Will Books? I didn't have a lot of time, unfortunately, just part of a morning. Next time I visit I'll try to figure out what was going on. In the meantime, the Probate Court has a website with a telephone number you can call for genealogy searches. There's probably a charge for a search, but they would at least be able to tell you what would have happened to property when a someone died without a will in that time frame. http://www.tallaco.com/probate.asp is the website, and the phone number for "geneological services" (someone needs to learn to spell!) is 1-256-825-4266. They charge $1/per page for copies of records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Born in 1868 to George Washington Green Turnham and his second wife, Sarah Ann Fields. There is a possibility that he was born somewhere else as George Washington Green Turnham migrated from Tallapoosa County, then Coosa County and eventually Jefferson County. He may have lived in Shelby County because his oldest daughter, by his first wife, married a man from there. But he bought land in Jefferson County and is buried on the property. I can provide more information if you think this is the same person. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: pdtune Surnames: Holley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.tallapoosa/1701.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Greetings, Howell Holley researchers. I am here to share information and to request it. I am descended from Howell by one of the illigetimate children he had with his mistress Nancy Hodge. Howell and Nancy had 6 children, and if you look at the 1840 Census, you will find Howell living with a younger woman and 6 minor children (although he later denied this living arrangement in his answer to the divorce petition filed by his wife Elizabeth). Now, his illigetimate daughter, Caroline Matilda, married a man named Levi C Ponder. On the 1850 Census record where Elizabeth is found, you will find that she is living next to Levy(sp) C Ponder and his wife Caroline and their infant daughter Nancy J. Just a few families above Levi is Green Lee Holley, and his wife and children. Evidently, the half-siblings got along quite well. I know of two sons that Howell had by Nancy Hodge; James M and John. What I am lookig for is a probate record for Howell after his death in 1850. Can ! anyone help? Thanks much! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I live in Dallas so I have no way to check with the probate office or to see who lives on the property now where Solomon and Jane Lacks lived near Jackson't Gap Al. I don't understand why if Solomon and Jane Lacks owned land then why is it then when he died in 1854 was he able to leave most of their land to his three brothers in Virginia and only left Jane a small section of land to live on. I know that back then every thing was in the husband's name but it seems like she would have owned at least half of the land but maybe back then it did not work that way. Would you have any information about that? Thanks, Ross Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MARGARETLSMITH Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.tallapoosa/4193.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ross, the land transactions shown on the BLM site (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov) are purchases from the Federal Government. Each purchase listed for him is for 1/4 of a quarter section. If you go to the site you can not only see what parcels he bought, but print out a digital copy of the actual certificate. This is a wonderful site - you can search by location as well as by name, so you can see who purchased adjoining parcels, for instance. It only covers "Federal land states", where the government sold land, so won't work for the original 13 colonies or for Kentucky or Tennessee, all of which used the "metes and bounds" system for specifying land. The parcel purchased in 1851 was in Township 22N, Range 22E, the SW quarter of the SW quarter (i.e., the SW sixteenth) of Section 13. I would imagine that if Jane died without a will, her property would have passed on to her children, share and share alike. The land might have been sold and the proceeds divided, or each may have taken some part of the land. That information should be in the Probate Court office, too, I would guess, since they would have Intestate records for those who died leaving property but no will. If you can't find anyone to check this before then, I'll be going to south Alabama to visit a sister next week, and could try to get to Tallapoosa County (I'll be in Chambers County). There is some research I need to do there anyway, though I'm not sure I'll be able to take the time. I'll get back to you if I do. I did not even know Solomon Lacks bought a third property in 1851. Were teh firstg two properties he received land grants or did he buy the property? Also, was the tghird propertyh a purchase or a grant? Where was it located and could you tell me how yhou were able to find that purchase. I know Jane, wife of Solomon Lacks, was still living after he died in 1854. I read his will which is posted on the internet. He left Jane one of the properties but I forget which propertyh it was. As I mentioned I am trying to find when Jane Lacks died and where she was buried. I could not find a will for her although she had sons living in Tallapoosa co Al in the 1850's and the 1860's. If she was living on the land Solomon Lacks left her when she died and if she did not have a will what would have happened to the land? If I could find what happended to the land Solomon Lacks left Jane in his will then maybe it would help determine when she died. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I will try to find the will again for Solon Lacks and see which property he left Jane. I noticed tgwo of tghe properties were for about 40 acres. Do you think that was a land grant or a purchase from someone? Thanks, Ross Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mlsmith67 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.tallapoosa/4193.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ross, if someone can go to the courthouse and check the land records in the Probate Court, it is easy to look up who owns land, given the Township, Range, Section, etc. information. Since Lacks bought 2 adjoining parcels in 1837 and 1839 (the 3rd parcel, in Section 13, not until 1851), I'm assuming he lived on the 2 parcels in Section 24 of Twp 22N, Range 22E: the SE and NE quarters of the SW 1/4 of the Section. The other way takes a lot longer: find the record of when he or his widow sold the land, then find when that purchaser sold it, etc., down to the most recently recorded sale, all through the indexes. BTW, for anyone interested, I found the record of which parcels he bought on the BLM Government Land Office site at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ I chose "Search Documents", then filled in the state and county, and Solomon Lacks' name. There possibly could be a grave on the land where Solomon and Jane Lacks lived but I do not know who owns the land now. It is located just south of hwy 38 or 280 about a mile. It may not be a hwy but possibly a road and it is marked on the map as both 38 and 280. Would anyone live in that area thatg might be able to tell me who lives on that property if I sent you a map with the exact location?
