Before John left Scotland he was a DYER in a cotton mill so maybe it was the job that took him to the US. Do the census returns that you looked at give addresses? sorry to be a nuisance. Bazjaq

Sorry for the error, but that's good news, right? There's no address on the census pages, but John, John Jr., and William are in the 1895 city directory living at 36 Ives, I assume in Windham Town. I can email you the census images, WWI registration cards for Joseph Foy and William Francis Foy, and the pages out of the city directory. If you want these images, let me know what email address to use. You're not a nuisance. I'm glad to help. Tony
