    1. Uriah ANDOW 1800-????

    3. Uriah ANDOW is lost, stolen or strayed. If anyone can find him, or his family, I'd be most grateful if they could secure him please. He's an ex con and a slippery customer it would seem. Uriah ANDO(E/W) was the son of Richard and Ann (NUTT) of Walton, SOM, England, b c1800. On 20 Oct 1828, he acquired lodgings at Ilchester Gaol, SOM. He was convicted of stealing 3 lambs on 28 Mar 1829, and invited to take a cruise to Australia on the Claudine, departing London, on 19 Aug 1829, for a lifelong holiday. He arrived 6 Dec of that year. He was an ag lab by trade and stated he he could plough, reap, shear and milk. He had Tickets of Leave in 1838, 1840 and 1843 before applying for a Conditional Pardon which was granted on 1 October 1848 - Conditional Pardon No. 48/1773. As far as I know, he didn't return to England although he'd left a wife, Eleanor/Ellen (nee MARSH) behind along with his son, George. However, Eleanor and George disappear after 1851, as does Eleanor's illegitimate dau, Emily Marsh ANDOW. The Conditional Pardon prevented him from returning to England but allowed him to go anywhere else in the world. Once he was in another country, he could easily have slipped back with a name change. The disappearance of the rest of the family suggests they may have all been reunited. There are two instances of ANDOWs becoming ANDREWS, whether deliberately or accidentally, I've no idea. I have showing his arrival in Australia, his pardon and transportation. I've tried the NSW site but there's nothing coming up for a marriage or any children. Nor a death. So where was he?? He may have headed for America for the 1849 Gold Rush. He could have gone to South Africa or Canada. Any help in pinning him down would be much appreciated. I just hope he's not going to be another Dear Cousin Albert!! They are distantly related by marriage <VBG> -- http://home.comcast.net/~webact1/Collingridge/

The answer mydear is obvious -- Uriah went to visit Albert on his last leave and they rode off into the sunset. (Cue theme from Good, Bad, Ugly...) ;) Cheryl

On the off-chance he might have gone to Argentina, have a look at <www.argbrit.org> > > Any help in pinning him down would be much appreciated. Mind you I have a similar problem, cousin Ruth Mary Ann Wall married a Russian emigré in 1881 with just a hint of a shotgun. he, Constantin Baranoff, then vanishes, possibly to Sacramento. Ruth then takes up with a married man, Thomas de Breton Godfrey, and they go off to New York in Septemebr 1887, abandoning her son and his wife and three children. Come 1899 they get married in Bishop's Stortford both claiming to be single. I can't find any trace of them in the US, or back in England after the wedding. -- Graeme Wall My genealogy website <www.greywall.demon.co.uk/genealogy>
