What could you possible say to a prospective > employer about usernet that would get you a job? It's not what you would say to a prospective employer, but what that potential employer's Google search of your past newsgroup/Usenet posts could reveal about YOU. Many employers apparently do that now, and for certain some applicants are turned down because of a public trail left behind that came back to bite them. Harder to maintain two separate personalities-- internet and real world-- anymore. You've got to be accountable for both. Bruce

You think it's bollocks and at least an urban myth, but you will accept proof to the contrary. And of course, since you're apparently not in the US, you'll also accept that it well may be the case here, but you don't really know. Have you ever posted any comments in a newsgroup that you'd be at all embarrassed about? You don't rate any proof, IMO. Ignore all I said.

It's part of a standard employment screening now.. and if you are a police officer or a public official they do it often while you are employed. Look at the Lexington KY POlice officers who arrested the Country Music Star John Michael Montgomery... they were all disciplined or fired for posting information about the arrest on their blogs and myspace. One of them even commented about how the "whiny rich Lexington Kentucky residents" treat their police officers. Things can come back to haunt you bigtime. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The Derby City BBS -= Allen Prunty =- telnet://derbycitybbs.com -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Where Friends Gather --- Synchronet 3.15a-Win32 NewsLink 1.85 * Derby City Online - Louisville, KY - telnet://derbycitybbs.com

It is certainly not part of a standard employment screening where I live. I believe polie officers in US also hold down other jobe - a strict no-no in UK. -- Terry

I know someone from another group that was passed over for a job once the prospective employer read his contributions to a flame war. I also know a blogger who was passed over because the company didn't approve of his views as expressed in his blog. -- }:-) Christopher Jahn {:-( http://soflatheatre.blogspot.com/ "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
