I think a lot of earlier infant deaths were handled in a fairly perfunctory way with family doctors signing off on deaths with rather general CODs. In earlier times where infant mortality rates were much higher than today, people were less obsessed with the exact causes of death than they are now. Unless a baby died because of obvious abuse, I think it's not likely that a postmortem would have been conducted. Nancy T
