Immigration and emigration differ in the same way as arrival differs from departure. Emigration is departing from a place. Immigration is arriving at a place. So my grandfather emigrated from Germany in November 1847 after a couple of months at sea immigrated into the US on February 1848.
Generic question for the masses. How do you define immigration? And / or how do you define emigration? Do you consider them the same thing or a I vs. E event? In my database, I have called all the relatives immigration based on Census record, or other documentation. TIA for your opinion or supporting information as to a difference between the two items. Broad generalizations: Emigration = leaving a place/country without consideration of destination. Immigration = coming to a place/country, usually without consideration of place of origin. Operational definitions: So, e.g., the Irish immigrants TO the US emigrated FROM Ireland or many English and Scottish emigrants went to Australia. Equally, the American West was settled by emigrants from "back East", the "Okies" of the Dust Bowl era were immigrants to California, who emigrated from Oklahoma and elsewhere. Everyone here knows about FamilySearch Indexing. To date it has brought us nearly a billion names and their records for us to use, and many are finding things they had even gone to the record repositories themselves that had them and those there had not been able to find the information! This started with a single person setting up a page on Facebook for 'Super Indexing Sunday', and now FamilySearch has picked it up and started a page as well. You can go to both pages and 'like' both if you are on Facebook, and even if not, you can still join the event simply by doing as much indexing as you can that day. Information on FamilySearch Indexing: http://indexing.familysearch.org/ Facebook page for FamilySearch Indexing, includes a link to sign up for indexing or even to start indexing: http://www.facebook.com/familysearchindexing Facebook event page for 'Super Indexing Sunday': http://www.facebook.com/familysearchindexing#!/event.php?eid=160957910622396 FamilySearch's Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/familysearch

The 1901 Canada Census Index on Ancestry.com says there is a Tallman family in Clinton, Lincoln & Niagara, Ontario; father named Richard, mother Matilda, and five children. I have tried to find this family in 1901 Census of Canada Indexing Project (http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html) to no avail. I have tried browsing the 1901 Clinton census pages and still can't find them. Could someone with an Ancestry subscription please let me know what census page the Ancestry index is pointing to? Many thanks, David Cornell
