Census data can never be *proof*; not only do they not require documentation, you have no way of knowing who provided the information. Was this person REALLY James Lail, or someone pretending to be him? The census taker wouldn't know; they may not even have ever talked to him. Neighbors often provide the information, and they don't always know. While I think this is probably your guy, you need corroborating evidence to have "proof." What you have now is only evidence. But knowing where he was living, you know where to concentrate you efforts for more evidence. -- }:-) Christopher Jahn {:-( http://soflatheatre.blogspot.com/ Fleas on my catma!

    1. Cook County BMD online records: now June/July 2008
    2. saki
    3. Here it is, a shiny new year, and I was all revved up for my Cook County online BMD records just the way they promised...but no, not yet, alas. This was announced in September: "Jason Meisner, Tribune Staff Reporter, 09/07/2007 "Professional genealogists and people interested in researching their family tree will soon be able to access key records from home instead of ordering by mail or traipsing down to a musty office in the Loop, Cook County Clerk David Orr said Thursday. "If all goes as planned, newly digitized versions of county records such as birth and death certificates and marriage licenses will be available beginning in January on one searchable Web site that will revolutionized how such research is done, Orr said". My recent check with David Orr's office resulted in an email about a few unspecified glitches in the system. As a result, they say, "Our new go- live date is (hopefully) June/July of 2008". Patience is a virtue, so it is said. ---- saki@ucla.edu

    3. I am considering which level to choose in renewing my online Godfrey Library subscription. Could anyone currently using the World Vital Records option tell me what types of things are covered over and above the standard option? I notice they dropped access to census records a while ago. Are these now included in the "Vital Records"? Bruce

    1. Enough Proof ?
    2. JDLail
    3. I have a case where one of my family (Confederate) from Georgia was captured in the Civil War, taken to Fort Columbus (NY City area), took the oath of allegiance, and was released in Sept 1863. He never came home. His four children were scattered between the paternal grandparents and the mother. However a man with his name shows up in Northern New Jersey within months of his 1863 release . He married and remained in Morris Co. NJ until his death in 1926. So its reasonable to suspect that these are the same guy. The surname here (Lail) was exceedingly rare at that point in time and the given name (James) had never been used before in the family, This James appeared in 5 New Jersey census records from 1870-1920. In all cases he lists his birthplace as Georgia. In all cases but one he lists his fathers birthplace as Georgia as well. The exception being 1920 when he gave it as North Carolina. And finally In all cases but one he gives a birth year ca. 1846-7. The exception being 1880 when he gave 1836-7 for his birth. The James missing from my family was born 1834-7 in Tennessee but was raised in Georgia. The family moved there ca. 1842. His father was born in NC. So do I have enough proof ? Thanks.

In my opinion, the best approach for a beginner, is to pick which ever program is easiest to obtain. After you see what the program does and doesn't do, the experience will allow you to better judge the other programs out there. Just be sure you choose one that supports Gedcom (.GED) import and export so your efforts won't be completely wasted if you decide to move to another program. Others have noted that the .GED format may not be perfectly universal. However, it should work sufficiently well to minimize editing, if you keep hard copies of your documentation. Did anyone mention the ShareWare program, Brother's Keeper? <http://www.bkwin.net/> Fred

    3. For counties that SAMPUBCO indexes, are they 100% complete? If I do not find a will in there, should I give up or look elsewhere? http://www.sampubco.com/

    3. Regarding incorrect information being posted online: Don't always trust the hard copy printed word either. There is one book on my dad's family that states clearly that my 2nd gr grandparents died young and without children. Apparently no one even bothered to check the censuses. They raised a large family, lived to old age in plain sight on the census records, and of course had many descendants (including me :-). I got in touch with the author. She was gracious and indicated that she would add an errata sheet to books already printed and correct the next printing. I doubt that the book will go into a second printing, and we know what happens to errata sheets. :-/ Donna
