    1. GeoCities to go belly up
    2. Brendan R. Wehrung
    3. If you try to log onto GeoCites you'll see Yahoo's notice that you can't join any more and the service will be shut down later this year. As the home of many geneology projects, losing free GeoCities is a blow. Can anybody suggest another free web-hosting service that is likely to be around for a while? Brendan

While it may not continue under that name I'm sure the services offered will be around as Rootsweb is owned by Ancestry- and they aren't going away anytime soon.

    3. Hello Vic, google for one of the free web hosting / pages site. I use geocities.com, since bought by yahoo. My tree http://geocities.com/kenefick_1965/. Save your .FTM as a GEDCOM. Then use a GEDCOM to HTML converter to make the web pages. Copy the files according to your hosts rules FTM 2006 may allow you to make a tree. But I am not 100% sure where, though. Look under Internet. They limit it to 2000 names for some strange reason. 3. The danger in making it widely available is that someone will adopt it as their own tree just because a few names overlap. Then, they will add to it without a lot of regard for accuracy or citations. In a few months, you won't recognize it. Just as bad, future "researchers" will find the modified data & assume it to be accurate. Thus, bad data gets reinforced & soon becomes "true". Another respondent suggested a limited distribution with a password requirement, which is a good idea. You could post the family names (but not complete trees) on Rootsweb; interested people could contact you. 2. You can use ancestry.com or rootsweb.com. Neither includes the names of those who are still alive. If you would like to share with just your family I recommend tribalpages.com. I have my genealogy there and have included the names of the living because it can be accessed only with a security code I gave to members of the family. They like it a lot.

    3. I am not doing much research, merely coding the data several family historians have collected. I am using Family Tree Maker. This is nearly complete with a total of almost 1000 individuals, and goes back to 1607 on one leg of the tree. I'm thinking this could be useful to others. I would like to make this available on the web, but I note there are many sites that solicit uploads. Does anyone have an idea of which site may be the most comprehensive or what criteria I should use to choose a site? Also, I have been reading about not publishing data on individuals who are still living. Is this a problem I should address in some way? Last, most of my sources are nothing more than a scanned piece of paper that someone (I may not even know who) handwrote. Are these acceptable? Thank you for any advise and experience you may be able to impart. Vic

    3. Genealogy Discipline in Education: ALISE The Association for Library and Information Science Education "is a non-profit organization that serves as the intellectual home of university faculty in graduate programs in library and information science in North America." http://www.alise.org/mc/page.do There are the 2009 ALISE Conference Participatory Papers, with "abstracts for papers that were selected through a blind peer review process. They are available for community comment." http://blogs.iis.syr.edu/alise/ Item #49 is: MPACT Family Trees: Quantifying academic genealogy in library and information science. http://blogs.iis.syr.edu/alise/archives/174 . . . 13 No previously published research has generated a technique or methodology for calculating and quantifying academic genealogy. 14 Description of Metrics In order to quantify the output of academic genealogy, seven different metrics have been proposed: A score—the sum of the number of times an individual has served as an advisor on a dissertation; A+C score—the sum of the number of times an individual has served on a dissertation in any capacity (either as an advisor or committee member); T score—the sum of the total number of descendants in an individual’s family tree; D score—a calculation of decayed influence on descendants in an individual's family tree; G score—the sum of the number of generations of descendants of an individual; W score—the sum of descendants in the largest generation in an individual's family tree; and the TA score—the sum of the number of descendants in an individual’s family tree who went on to become advisors themselves. With the exception of the A+C score, all the above metrics are comprised of only advisorships as the effects of committeeships on academic lineage are more personal and limited in scope with respect to an entire discipline. These metrics provide seven different angles by which one can quantify the impact of an individual’s lineage, identify prominent branches, and describe the nature of academic lineage within a discipline. . . . 49 The technique proposed in this research provides a firm foundation in identifying, quantifying, and contextualizing mentorship and academic genealogy within the academic community. Compare with: An academic usage of "Genealogy Method" in real time, within fields of research, vindicates truthfulness of conclusions, as shown by historical comparison. The "genealogy method", or the "genealogical perspective": scientific method of looking to the past, by using a "reverse" process of economic projection methodology. http://www.academic-genealogy.com/academiceducationlearningresources.htm Family Genealogy & History Internet Education Directory http://www.academic-genealogy.com/

    2. Daniel Stieger
    3. Hi I am very certain about the spelling of the name 'Lüchinger' (of course, the first name could be either Josef or Joseph). I know that the Umlauts ('ü') were often changed into something which better fits the English language (e.g. 'Luchinger' would be a quite natural transformation). The Luschsinger (today in Glarus and in Zurich) are a quite separate tribe. There were no contacts between the Lüchinger and the Luchsinger as far as I know. Best regards, Dani "D. 3. Hi Cathy Many thanks for your help. Lechinger is close to 'Lüchinger' / 'Luechinger'. However, In Eichenwies / Oberriet there was no tradition in making cigars. Josef used to be a landlord in Switzerland. Joseph was quite well situated. Before he emigrated he sold a very big house.
