For gals with somewhat unusual last names, I've gone to places that give ages in the results (zabasearch.com) and look for guys who were born up to five years before or after 1938, when most of my classmates were born. There are a pair of search engines - usa-people-search.com and peoplefinders.com - that give ages, city and state in the results, but not street address and phone. (You have to pay to get those details.) But just narrowing the results to a city and state is very helpful when the name is fairly common. Ray

I ran a 50th reunion in 2006, essentially following your strategy. Out of 389 graduates, there are only 56 that remain unaccounted for, 35 being women. Each year, I send a "hello" email to the graduates asking for updates to their data. In it, I include a list of those who remain unaccounted for. I'm sure some have died, but without the gals' marriage names, I've reached a dead end, so I'm willing to spend a few bucks to access a commercial marriage-records service.

I've toyed with the idea of doing DNA testing in hopes of obtaining information that'd help break through my paternal-line brickwall. It seems to me, though, that DNA results are ambiguous at best - they can tell when you share a common ancestor with another person but can't tell you even so much/little as the generation - you merely identify another person in the male line of descent from the ur-grandfather. I don't see that kind of result as justifying the testing fees. OK, those are MY negatives. I understand the mechanism, I think, and see the drawbacks and seriously wonder whether the cost is justified. There's bound to be somebody out there, though, who has a success story, and that's what I'm looking for. Anybody? You signed up, paid the (exorbitant) fee, got the results and made a significant breakthrough you would not otherwise have made. I don't want recommendations for Service A vs Service B - if that's what you have to offer, don't bother replying. I'm not looking for an argument about affordability - that's an individual thing and is also of no interest. I AM interested in your success stories - years of searching without result, did the DNA bit, got the guy with the ancestor in common and, voila!, the wall came tumbling down! It looks as if the enumerator started to write "Ward" first, and them remembered that it was supposed to be surname first. Anything you can to to make this family easier to find by other researchers would be a good thing.
