I can't really comment on the name Joshua, insofar as it is extremely unusual in the English parish records I am studying. However, I find a lot of confusion between the names Josiah and Joseph. This tends, I think, to be transcription error, especially when names have been abbreviated to "Jos." or similar. If I were you, I would be asking myself which sources are certain to have spelled the name out in full, and which might have expanded the name from an abbreviation.. After all, it only takes one enumerator or transcriber to misunderstand the difference between "Josh." and "Jos'h" (or to misread the source) to sow great confusion. Steven
This is the situation. I have an obituary that says Ephraim Barlet was born to Joseph and Mary Barlet in 1826 in Heidelberg Twp. Berks Co Pa. Joseph Barlet is living in Heidelberg Twp. Berks Co Pa. in the 1830 and 1840 census. Per both census Joseph and his wife were born between 1790 and 1800. Per other records I have found a Joshua and Mary Barlet both born between 1790 and 1800. These records consistently list the person as Joshua Barlett. Some of these records are from Heidelberg Twp. Berks Co Pa. In 1860 Joshua and Mary Barlet are living in Heidelberg Twp. Berks Co Pa. Question. Has other researcher found that the names Joshua/Josua and Joseph consistently used as separate names, or have people found that Joshua and Joseph have been used interchangeable for the same person.
Hi all! We've finished Version 1.0 of Linkpendium's search engine for free genealogical data on the Web. You can use it here: http://searches.linkpendium.com/websearch.html It makes 2,648,502 pages searchable. You can search by state, or you can choose "ALL" down at the bottom of the state menu. "ALL" may be more than you really want most of the time, though: for "Smith" it returns 319,805 results! While this is the first version of the search engine, it won't be the last. We know there's a lot more genealogical data out there, and we *will* find it. ;-) So have fun, and good luck with your searches.
