My ancestors, Hugh and Catherine DALE moved to Sumter County in 1832. Their son, John Clanton Dale, was the first white child born in Sumter County. It is thought that they first lived in Bluff Port. In 1841, Hugh Dale was in the poll list for Livingston. In his 1850 census record, Payneville is listed as town of residence. Hugh Dale owned a cotton plantation...the house was known as "the Old Dale plantation". A steamboat that ran from Demopolis to Columbus, MS was supposedly named for their daughter, Kate Dale. Hugh Dale was a Mason and a stock-holder in the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in its early days. Does anyone have any information * on this family? * on Bluff Port or Payneville? * or know the location of the "Old Dale plantation"? * or where I might obtain such information? Thanks, Nancy
