Good idea Susan. I am researching COCKRELL. Supposedly, my Samuel was borne there in 1847. Son of Wiley and Mary Cockrell. Mary Margaret Allen
Hello, I am curious on what other Sumter County members are researching. Is it possible that from time to time we could have a Surname roll call? It would be wonderful if we could state what we are researching. Susan
Hello, To anyone knowledgeable about these Surnames and their History in and near Sumter County Alabama. I have already pointed out that I am researching Winston, Frazier, Wright and Dunning. However I am also looking for any information on the following surnames: Boughton, Pendleton, Todd, Ward, Tremble/Trimble, Simmons, Rileys, Beck, Bell, Dawson,Lawson,Birds/Byrd,Cherry, Dyle,Gee,Glass,Roberson,Robinson, and Guill. All these are connecting Surnames to my family. They all left Alabama for Louisiana immediately after Slavery. I would be grateful for any information, Susa
Does anyone know if a "census" has been taken of the cemetery up at Old Bluffport? If so where could I obtain a copy? Thanks Kathy
Does the Livingston history have any Key, Bush, or Grizzle info? -----Original Message----- From: ALSUMTER-D-request@rootsweb.com <ALSUMTER-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: ALSUMTER-D@rootsweb.com <ALSUMTER-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, July 03, 2000 2:00 PM Subject: ALSUMTER-D Digest V00 #29
Barbara, I do not know of any books that cover the Cahoons, McElroys, Nelsons or Wabbington families of Sumter County. The few books written about Sumter County families were written, for the most part, about families in the Livingston and north Sumter areas. However, there are lots of records in the courthouse with regard to your surnames, and there are marked graves for, at least, Cahoons and McElroys in the Ward and Cuba areas. Hello Barbara, I have a cousin who has Cahoons in her family. Her name is Elizabeth and her e-mail address is <BAMAJELY@aol.com>. Just tell her that JUNE in Mobile referred you to her. Hope she can help you. June
Can anyone tell me if the HODGES are in this book? They lived in the Northwestern part of the County, I believe. Dear Barbara, Thank you so much all all the information on the History of Livingston book. I am also interested on any existing Articles, pictures, landmarks, historic areas, Plantations, Prominent families and business that existed in the 1800s in Sumter County. Thank you so very much, Susan
A handy thing to know about is how to search the RootsWeb Archives for our List's earlier messages. To do so, one goes to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl [Note: the ending of that URL is "PL" as in "place", not the number one] I was able to use a search there to help in the following answers to Joan's & Susan's questions: The book is truly as the title says, a history of the town, not the whole county, though as the original message said (copied at the bottom of this message, from RootsWeb Archives for our List), "There is quite a lot of interesting information about the area, if you can take the time to "read" this history of Livinston, which is county seat of Sumter County." Winston families are covered, however the Gov's name only showed up in the index one time, on a page talking about the covered-Winston-families being cousin of him. For how to obtain, see my originally posted info (recopied here from our List's archives): " A History of the Town of Livingston, Alabama, the book by Robert D. Spratt, copyright 1997 edition, was published (thanks to a generous grant from The Sumter County Historical Society) by Livingston Press, Station 22 The University of West Alabama Livingston, AL 35470 No phone number is shown on their invoice When I bought my copy in 1997, the cost of this excellent 180-page paperback was $12.95 plus $3 shipping per order. Try sending them a check for $15.95 and requesting a copy; it should still be available. Barbara" = = = >Original message, posted by: Renee Hall Cumberland, SReneeHC@aol.com on Friday 2 June 2000 Interesting book: HISTORY OF LIVINGSTON ALABAMA is a very good book to use in researching ancestors. I believe the author is Spratt. You really must search the pages one-by-one, though, as the index is not complete. There is quite a lot of interesting information about the area, if you can take the time to "read" this history of Livinston, which is county seat of Sumter County. I was able to identify ancestors whom I'd never even heard of, and I grew up in around Livingston. Good Luck!
Susan, I have a copy of the first edition of this book. Unless additional material has been added, the History of Livingston book does not contain anything on John Anthony Winston. It merely mentions other Winstons (e.g., Anthony, William O.), but it only refers to them as being of a prominent North Sumter family (suggesting that they were not directly involved with Livingston). Joe
Hello, Does anyone know what is included in this book? I am very interested in anything on the Gov. John Anthony Winston, his Family and his Slaves. How much does the book coast and where can I obtain a copy? Thank you, Susan
