    3. Thea there was a new book at library-about Sumter Co. Ala. Cemetery Inscriptions and Orphans' Court-found family-so excited-wrote Sumter Co.-he'd been ill for a long time and had already given his possessions away so I wrote again and got the same willl they'd sent me already so now I'm writing for the Land deed index under GR and Mc. Have a fractured spine(there I got to tell you too-loving all this sympathy from my internet family) -but seriously-the book was quite informative-just seems that wherever my family was the courthouse burnt down etc.-sometimes I've wondered if some grgrfa of mine didn't burn it down! frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thea Burress" <tburress@libertyfund.org> To: <ALSUMTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2000 4:29 PM Subject: [ALSUMTER] Hibbler/Johnson > I am looking for information on my ancestors and relatives. 3. Thea this may not be of any help but an aunt of mine is married to a Hibler/Hibler? I always heard he was just about full Cherokee. We have Indian blood in us too but I seem to be the only one in the family who was interested in it except for "family" with whom we think we're related but haven't been able to connect due to lack of names/brick walls-plenty of them. We're of Scotch/Irish/Welsh and some English I think descent and my mother's people German American Pioneers-everybody came to Texas but can't find a grgrgrfa who went back to Ala. from Miss. That's my Green Riddle. We had ancestors Ala. Sumter Co. -McCown/Greene-another stumbling block-wherever I find brick walls I find the Indian blood. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thea Burress" <tburress@libertyfund.org> To: <ALSUMTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2000 4:29 PM Subject: [ALSUMTER] Hibbler/Johnson > I am looking for information on my ancestors and relatives. 3. Hi Dave - The only Cartherine Carroll's I have are Catherine Carroll (b 1880) daughter of William R Carroll, and Catherine A Carroll (b 1872) daughter of Jacob P Carroll and Cartherine Nuffer. There is a chance, however, that she is his (Jacob's) niece. I would be interested to know anything else you can tell me about her. Do you know where she was before 1880? 3. Kathy, I would like to know any history you may have on Catherine CARROLL, b1850/AL, who married Middleton N DUBOSE after 1880 in Sumter Co., AL.. I am researching Dubose's daughter Gussie DuBose and John Clarence WILSON of York, Sumter Co., AL.. Gussie had something 16 names including Dubose and Wilson, according to her Grandson, Walter D Wilson. Gussie was not a given name. She was the step daughter of Catherine and the daughter of Middleton and Sarah A. JORDAN, dau of Jesse JORDAN. 3. I am looking for information about my family. We are of African American descent. It is my understanding that all of them were born and/or lived and died in Sumter County, AL near either Gainesville, Panola or Warsaw. My 2nd great grandfather was Melvin NEWTON(b. unk d. approx 1892-5). It has been told to us that he was either full or 1/2 Indian. It has also been told to us that the men of the town poisoned him to death because he was sleeping with their wives. He married Mary Elizabeth BOSTON(b. unk d. unk). They had at least one child that I know of..my great grandmother Laura NEWTON(b. 2/26/1890 d. 7/31/1983). Her father died when she was very young. She didn't remember him. Laura NEWTON married Jim TURNER(b. unk d. approx 1957). They had several children Clara TURNER Conway, George TURNER, Laura Mae TURNER Stanton, Leotis TURNER Washington, Mary TURNER, Mattie Lee TURNER and my grandfather, Jimmie Lee TURNER. I believe that they all attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Warsaw, AL. They are buried there at the church cemetery. I haven't been able to get out there see the gravesites yet. 3. I wish I knew what Mary Cook's maiden name was! I have been trying to determine that since 1986! Quite possibly she may have been a Boyd. Because her nephew's name was May, I have considered that May was a possibility, if the boy was Mary's brother's son. Did Mary Cook have a brother? I don't know. If so, was he killed during the civil war? Was that why the nephew lived with Mary? I have so many unanswered questions! At this point, every lead has turned into a "brick wall ". Mary Cook was the wife of Benjamin Cook, who was a watchmaker, jeweler, and silversmith in Livingston, Alabama from 1850 until 1876( I think) when he was killed by robbers while bringing a shipment of bulk silver back to Livingston. He had two daughters: Mattie married Dr. Francis Loper in 1878 and moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Anna, theolder daughter, marries L.S. Watts in 1893. Anna was a schoolteacher in Livingston. Sons James and Thomas Cook were farmers in the Livingston area. My grandfather William Cook moved to Texas in 1899, working for the Cotton Belt Railroad. Does any of this concide with any of your information pertaining to James May? If not, at least we tried, didn't we? These brick walls are so exasperating! Lois

    2. Nancy Bell
    3. My ancestors, Hugh and Catherine DALE moved to Sumter County in 1832. Their son, John Clanton Dale, was the first white child born in Sumter County. It is thought that they first lived in Bluff Port. In 1841, Hugh Dale was in the poll list for Livingston. In his 1850 census record, Payneville is listed as town of residence. Hugh Dale owned a cotton plantation...the house was known as "the Old Dale plantation". A steamboat that ran from Demopolis to Columbus, MS was supposedly named for their daughter, Kate Dale. Hugh Dale was a Mason and a stock-holder in the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in its early days. Does anyone have any information * on this family? * on Bluff Port or Payneville? * or know the location of the "Old Dale plantation"? * or where I might obtain such information? Thanks, Nancy
