I have obtained a copy of the Freedmen and Colored Marriage Records, 1865-1890, Sumter County, AL. This book contains information on more than 6,000 marriage license. It list the groom and bride's name(maiden name), the date they applied for the license, the date they were married, which book the information was obtained from and the page number. I am willing to do free lookups. Please forward me the names of the person you would like me to look up. Please be patient as I do work and have a household to run. This book was very valuable to me. I found two of my gggrandparents marriage information and a ggggranduncle's marriage info. Hope this will be of some help. Thea

Yes but if your ancestors were off the rolls before then you won't find 'em! I found mine in the "Armstrong Rolls" also in book compiled by Betty Wiltshire Cox "Choctaw and Chickasaw Early Census Records " ; you can request a lookup through SLC and Armstong Rolls available through Nat.l Archives; also may be available through AGLL. I'm not looking for a card but am still entitled to my ancestors and their heritage. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "David R Wilson" <dr.homer@mindspring.com> To: <ALSUMTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 27, 2000 4:21 PM Subject: [ALSUMTER] Native American Research > http://www.nara.gov/nara/nail/nailgen.html > > The NARA Archival Information Locator (NAIL) is a pilot database of selected > holdings and is a working prototype for a future online catalog of holdings > in Washington, DC, the regional archives, and the Presidential libraries. > Currently, NAIL contains limited genealogical data, particularly: > descriptions of 64,177 Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole applications > for enrollment to the Five Civilized Tribes (Dawes Commission) between 1898 > and 1914. > > > > > > ==== ALSUMTER Mailing List ==== > "When an old person dies ... it's like a library burning to the ground." > Sumter County, ALGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~alsumter > Listowner Kristy Williams Sumter@US-Gen.com > >
Albert I agree with you and I think I know what the problem is. In the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit there's a whole list of farmers Miss and part of Ala(includes Sumter Co.)that got OFF the rolls because the gov't. promised them they could stay in their homelands; they were plantation, slave-holding Indians; I finally found the book and LDS Salt Lake City will do ancestor lookups for you-will e-mail the address, "Choctaw and Chickasaw Early Census Records" compiled by Betty Wiltshire Cox; they are also known as the "Armstrong Rolls" and these are available on microfilm at the Nat'l Archives; then POSSIBLY they are available through AGLL(American Geneological Lending Library) available through your public library. Let me get the address for you for SLC>write: Correspondence c/oFamily History Library 35N.W.Temple St. Salt Lake City Utah 84150 Att.:Dawne Hole. I'm planning on requesting that they put it on microfilm but have to get form from a local LDS Library. I've been trying to get this on Internet but do not see it coming up? frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "Albert E. There is about 10 different listing on that site, that has digital copies of the records. When you search the Dawes Rolls, it searchs all recognized tribes, incuding Choctaw. I have seen the listings. You can pull up a search for all digital records with the word Choctaw in it. It even has a roster for the "Rough Riders". Note that no Choctaw information is available. Perhaps those of us with roots in the Sumpter County area need to press for our turn. Al Willard
http://www.nara.gov/nara/nail/nailgen.html The NARA Archival Information Locator (NAIL) is a pilot database of selected holdings and is a working prototype for a future online catalog of holdings in Washington, DC, the regional archives, and the Presidential libraries. Currently, NAIL contains limited genealogical data, particularly: descriptions of 64,177 Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole applications for enrollment to the Five Civilized Tribes (Dawes Commission) between 1898 and 1914.

Tell me what you'll charge if you're willing to go to the courthouse for me and I'll see if I can afford it. frances fmcw@ktc.com ALSO- check the Armstrong rolls for your family names-they are on microfilm at the Nat.'l Archives and possibly can be ordered through AGLL at your local public library. The book is "Cherokee and Chickasaw Early Census Records" compiled by Betty Wiltshire Cox-these were the plantation Indians who agreed to get off the rolls to be able to stay in Miss. and Sumter Co. Ala. was part of that area included in the Treaty at the time. My gggfa in that list was Wm. McClure of Miss.(White man with an Indian wife)-I'm not sure he wasn't Cherokee himself. You can write LDS Library in SLC for a name lookup. There are many names, not just the chiefs and the 5 families listed in the Treaty. I feel this is what's holding a lot of people up from finding their ancestors.

Thea in view of today's happenings geneology is the last thing of importance so I guess to console ourselves we turn to our internet family and pray for the families of those military personnel and for the mena and women themselves. Let's see - There was a Jacob Carroll who died in Sumter County in 1840-41 who I believe was the father of Jacob P Carroll. I've requested a copy of his will probated in August 1841 from the State of Alabama. This Jacob was too early I know but it will be interesting to see what family might be mentioned in the will. Jacob P Carroll married Catherine Nuffer October 23, 1847 and he died in December 28, 1887. While this Catherine appears to be too old to be the one you're looking for, there was also a Joshua Carroll who is either a twin or born within a year of Jacob and he had a wife named Catherine also (I forget what year she was born) who disappeared fairly early on. Also Jacob P Carroll had a two sons that I don't have deaths or marriages for, those being Joshua A Carroll b 1850 and John Carroll b 1854. This will take a little more digging. Kathy, Do you have any idea of when Jacob Carroll died? Gussie Dubose was the youngest child of Middleton Dubose and Sarah Jordan. Sarah died Dec 16, 1896. Living children of Sarah Jordan has told me that Middleton remarried Catherine Carroll, that she was a stepmother to them as indicated by the 1920 Census, living on Hill Stree in York, AL.. IF she was a widow and remarried Middleton then she would have been Catherine Carroll.
