    3. According to the HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ALABAMA, VOL 2, CEMETARIES BY COUNTIES, McElroy Cemetary, also known as Tabernacle Cemetary, is in T16N, R4W, Sect 1. It is about halfway between Cuba and Ward near Kinterbish Creek. It has about 100 graves from 1868. Names are Beavers, McElroy, Shaw, Walton and Webb. I hope this helps. 1. [ALSUMTER] Re: James Parker, in search of the captain
    2. I am sorry that I cannot help you. However, I would suggest that you search for his parents or grandparents in VA, NC or SC. As you may know, most of the early emigrants to Sumter County, Alabama came from either NC or SC; however, a few came from VA and GA. Unfortunately, there are no records in the Sumter County, AL courthouse that would tell you from where your Parker ancestor came. Joe Stegall

    3. I hope to submit an article of my ancestors as related to Sumter County. We have brief writings of their travel in a caravan of 100 white people and slaves in a wagon train from Virginia to Sumter in Sept. of 1837. They include the Hutchinsons, Lancasters, McKnights, Sprotts, Curry, and more. But it will be a while yet. 1. [ALSUMTER] Re: John Clayton Stegall
    2. I do not have any information on John Clayton Stegall or his parents. Do you have any reason to believe that he ever lived in Sumter County, Alabama, or are you just checking every county in the state? Stegall is not a common surname in Alabama. Our Stegall family came over from Pontotoc County, Mississippi around the turn of the century. I have heard of other Stegalls scattered around the state, but not many. There is a family in the Birmingham area and another in the Montgomery area. Have you searched the 1910 census? I believe that the Clayton Library in Houston, Texas has an index of persons, by state, in each census up through 1920. Good luck! Joe Stegall

    3. The Sumter County Heritage Book is called that simply because of the publishers. There is a series of books being published one at a time on each county in the state of Alabama. The book will be composed of articles submitted by anyone, concerning histories of families in Sumter County, histories of area towns, schools, churches, etc. The list is endless. You can submit an article up to 500 words to be published for FREE. (There is a charge for more than that.) The books are $50.00 each plus $4.00 tax, for a total of $54.00. If you would like the book mailed to you, there is a shipping & handling charge of $5.00, making the total $59.00. For an extra $5.00, you can have your name printed in gold on the front cover (max. 25 letters/spaces), for a total of $64.00. Books may be ordered any time directly from the Sumter County Heritage Book Committee. (checks made to that committee also, or Visa/MasterCard accepted). I'll have to find the correct address to mail payment or submissions for the book.
