Hi Shelly-- I have the 1850 Sumter Co., census. What can I do for you? Lynda Greene Allen
Hello, Is there anyone researching the name William HODGES or has access to the 1850 Sumter County Census? Please contact me offlist. Thanks. Shelly Hodges famsearch@home.com
As of 12-12-99 I will be stepping Down from Sumter County, Alabama Genealogy Site Due to other Obligations. If there is anyone wanting to Adopt this site contact me asap. God Bless, Sandy Family Tree I climbed my family tree and found it was not worth the climb; And so, I scampered down, convinced it was a waste of time. Some branches of my tree, I found, were rotten to the core. And, all the tree was full of sap and hung with nuts galore! I used to brag of my kinfolk, before I made the climb, but truth compels me not to tell of those not worth a dime. And I beg friends who boast aloud of their ancestors great, To climb their family tree and learn of those who weren't so straight. I've learned what family trees are like, I've seen them growing 'round. They're like a 'tater' vine because, the best are underground! Author Unknown

Well there is now a new Web site that will do the hard part for you. Family History GedCom Search (http://www.dhc.net/~design/gedcom/indxpage.htm) is a new creation from Design Software. They are the makers of Family Census Research and the soon to be released Aspen 2000, a new database for cemeteries, funeral homes and obituary records. Family History GedCom Search is the brain child born from numerous e-mails wishing that Design Software would create Web pages. So that sat down and began to think just how they could accomplish this. And they have come up with a wonderful system. You supply them with a GEDCOM file and a scanned image (that will be used on the main page) and they will create a first rate Web site of your family history, which they will then place on their site. Best of all, this service is available for free. And once your page has been created and uploaded, it is then part of their database, making it searchable. Of particular interest to me as I inspected their currently available pages was that they had taken into consideration the issue of privacy. Those individuals who are still living are protected to a certain degree. While the names are still listed, all other information is hidden behind a LIVING tag. This is important in today's society. More and more, in the online genealogy world, this subject is discussed. To be able to view these family pages, your Web browser must support Java Applets. This is due to the fact that parts of the pages rely heavily on Java applets, especially the search capabilities. This is just one of the ways in which individuals can place their family history online. If you are not comfortable working with one of the Web Page creation programs, then this is the easiest way to create your Web page. It is likely that you have created a GEDCOM or scanned a picture. If you can do these two things and send e-mail, then you are all set for creating a family history Web site.

I have been trying to find siblings and ancestors of Thomas Johnson. Thomas was b. abt. 1834 AL and died before 1970 probably in the Civil War. Thomas married Martha Haskins (b. 1836 AL) in Sumter Co., AL in 1855. I located in the 1860 Sumter Co. Census a Thomas "Johnston" who I believe must be the same man. It showed three sons-- James b. abt 1856; F. G. (Francis Glover I hope) b. 1857 ; and Thomas H. b. abt 1860. The handwritting was difficult to read so the names may not be exact. If you are working on this line I would like to hear from you. Thanks, Nan Glasgow

Hi y'all, Did the University of Alabama inventory private family cemeteries and lone graves? Where could I access this? My G Grandparents, Nathaniel T. Giles and Nettie Langford, had twins that died at birth around 1896 in Livingston, Sumter Co., AL. I've been unable to find any of my Giles or Langford graves in any public cemetery in Sumter Co.
