Kerr | | Moody---Judge Charles L. Kerr died on July 28, 2006 after an extended illness. He was born in Birmingham on June 5, 1921 to Bashel Lee "B.L"and Bertie (Stone)Kerr. On November 21, 1945, he was married to Goldie "Jean" Drinkwater at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California where both were serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted as a provate on February 16, 1942 and was honorably discharged as a sergeant major on May 29, 1946. He served in the Pacific area from June 14, 1942 until December 13, 1944, as a member of the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines, First Marine Division,on Peleliu. | | He was educated in the Public schools of Birmingham and St. Clair County Alabama and received an accounting degree from the Chillicothe Missouri Business College. When Pearl Harbor was attacked he was assistant to the General Manager of commissaries of Sloss-Sheffeld Steel and Iron Company, Birmingham and after giving sixty day notice resigned to enter th Marine Corups. | | After receiving his discharge, he and his wife moved to Moody. In August 1947, they moved to Tuscaloosa to enter the University where he subsequently obtained a degree in Business Administration, with honors while also founding and operating Home Charm Service (a rug & Upholstered furniture cleaning business). He also obtained his LLB degree with honors, as a member of the Law Review and Farrah Order of Jurisprudence. | | In October 1951, he moved to Greensboro where he practiced law for almost 15 yrs. In May 1966 he maoved to Dallas Texas where he pursued graduate studies in law at Southern Methodist University. After moving to San Antonio, Texas in June 1967, he was a professor in the School of Law at St. Mary's University until Aug. 31, 1971 when he resigned to return to Moody and the practice of law. From 1971 until 1976 he was attorney for the City of Leeds, when he resigned to run for the newly created office of State Destrict Judge for St. Clair County. After being elected, he organized the District and Juvenile Courts for the county. In Janurary, 1983 he returned to the practice of law in Leeds where he was also subsequently engaged in land development. He and his wife were also involved in the breeding and running of thoroughbred race horses. | | He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother ,Paul Douglas Kerr of Tampa, FL. He is survived by a brother, Walter L. Kerr Sr. of Moody , Two sisters Sarah Frances Thompson of Leeds and Jo Ann K.
