This obituary was taken from the St. Clair Times, St. Clair Co., AL Thursday August 3. 2006 James "Shag" Richey Ashville--Funeral services for James "Shag" Richey, age 75, was Sunday, July 30, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Belan Friday and Billy Church officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery. Mr. Richey died Friday, July 28, 2006. He graduated from DeKalb County High School; attended Snead Jr College and graduated from Jacksonville State University. He played basketball at Snead and Jax State. He was a retired teacher, coach, prinicipal, and superintendent of education of the St. Clair Schools. He coached and taught at Sylvania, Centre and Ashville. He was inducted in the Jacksonville State Sports Hall of Fame, the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame, and the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Ashville United Methodist Church. Mr. Richey was preceded in death by his parents Mr. & Mrs. John Candler Richey, sisters Inez Gilliland, Kathryn Robertson and Emma Kate Lister; brother- in -law L.Z. Robertson. He is survived by his wife of 52 yrs, Elvelier S. Richey; sons, James William "Jay" Richey (Martha) of Ashville and John Shanks Richey (Laura) of Arab; grandsons, John William Richey, Benjamin Thomas Richey, and James Michael "Jack" Richey; sisters, Johnnie Thompson (Lelon) and Mona Thompson (Ralph); brother Tom Richey (Freda) and brothers-in-law, Gerald Lister and Reuben Gilliland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the United Methodist Childrens Home, P. O. Box 830, Selma, AL 36702. Pallbearers were Joe Gilliland, Gregory Lister, Dr. Henry Thompson, Austin Sanders, Kin Logan, Ernie Bagley, Steve Thompson and Kenny Gossett. Honorary pallbearers were Zeb Henderson, Tommy Hill, Ira Thompson, Chuck Brown, Tommy Beane, Jimmy Reeves, Ross Jones, Dr. Stanley Horn, Neal Elders, and Jimmy Goodwin. Special thanks to the staff of Hidden Hills, Ragland. He has given us a sense of a life well lived, a time on earth well spent and a heritage of lasting meaning. Morgan Funeral Home in Attalla directed the services.
