This obituary was taken from the St. Clair Times, St. Clair Co., AL Thursday August 3. 2006 James "Shag" Richey Ashville--Funeral services for James "Shag" Richey, age 75, was Sunday, July 30, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Belan Friday and Billy Church officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery. Mr. Richey died Friday, July 28, 2006. He graduated from DeKalb County High School; attended Snead Jr College and graduated from Jacksonville State University. He played basketball at Snead and Jax State. He was a retired teacher, coach, prinicipal, and superintendent of education of the St. Clair Schools. He coached and taught at Sylvania, Centre and Ashville. He was inducted in the Jacksonville State Sports Hall of Fame, the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame, and the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Ashville United Methodist Church. Mr. Richey was preceded in death by his parents Mr. & Mrs. John Candler Richey, sisters Inez Gilliland, Kathryn Robertson and Emma Kate Lister; brother- in -law L.Z. Robertson. He is survived by his wife of 52 yrs, Elvelier S. Richey; sons, James William "Jay" Richey (Martha) of Ashville and John Shanks Richey (Laura) of Arab; grandsons, John William Richey, Benjamin Thomas Richey, and James Michael "Jack" Richey; sisters, Johnnie Thompson (Lelon) and Mona Thompson (Ralph); brother Tom Richey (Freda) and brothers-in-law, Gerald Lister and Reuben Gilliland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the United Methodist Childrens Home, P. O. Box 830, Selma, AL 36702. Pallbearers were Joe Gilliland, Gregory Lister, Dr. Henry Thompson, Austin Sanders, Kin Logan, Ernie Bagley, Steve Thompson and Kenny Gossett. Honorary pallbearers were Zeb Henderson, Tommy Hill, Ira Thompson, Chuck Brown, Tommy Beane, Jimmy Reeves, Ross Jones, Dr. Stanley Horn, Neal Elders, and Jimmy Goodwin. Special thanks to the staff of Hidden Hills, Ragland. He has given us a sense of a life well lived, a time on earth well spent and a heritage of lasting meaning. Mr. Phillips was a member of the American Legion N.R.A. and Hardin's Chapel Bible Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran achieving the rank of Spec. 5. He was a 1960 graduate of the University of Alabama, retired from Gulf States Steel as an electrical engineer with 40 years service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Glidewell Phillips, one daughter Susan Elaine Phillips of Thomaston Ga; one son, Christopher Talmadge Phillips (Karen Andrea Reaves); two grandchildren, Maggie Marie and Ashley Diane Phillips all of Ohatchee, AL. The funeral service was Tuesday, August 1, 2006, 2:00p.m. at Hardin's Chapel Bible Church in Ragland with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Doug Ford and Rev. Roger Kendrick officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Jay Howard, Craig Liggan, Derick Downey, Johney Moore, Wess Hodges and Tommy Johnson. Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City directed.

Mr. Manning, served in the U.S Army and a Korean War Veteran. He was retired from U.S Steel and was a member of Hardin's Chapel Church in Ragland. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Manning. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Manning; by his daughter Sarah Brazzolotto, and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his extended family. Services were Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from Usrey Chapel with the Rev. Doug Ford and the Rev. Roger Kendrick officiating. Interment followed at Pope's Chapel Methodist Cemetery. The following nephews served as Pallbearers: Michael Ramsey, Steve Ramsey, Chris Johnston, Gary smith, Harlan Bice, Mike Manning, Allen Manning, Terry Manning and Nathan Manning. He married CAROLINE ARANT TILL January 23, 1867 in Lowndes County, AL, daughter of JOHN TILL and MARTHA ARANT. She was born February 12, 1846 in Lowndes County, AL, and died May 18, 1902 in St Clair County, Ashville, AL. Notes for PERRY ROBERT MOORER: Perry R. was a Private in Alabama Company B, 24th Cavalry Battalion, CSA. (National Archive Microfilm Records: Box 000374, Extraction 0032, Record 00001778). He applied for the Relief of Needy Confederate Soldiers and Sailors, Residents of Alabama, who from wounds or other cause, are now unable to earn a livelihood by labor, under Act approved February 13th, 1891. Reads as follows: State of Alabama, County of St. Clair. Personally appeared before me, A. G. Watson, Judge of Probate in and for said County, Perry R. FYI: I am not related to this family, but for those interested in the Runyan line, the following obituary appeared today in The Birmingham News: Runyans, Foster, age 64, of Ashville, died July 31, 2006. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 2, at 2 p.m. at Usrey Chapel with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Ashville. Family will receive friends Wednesday 5:30-8p.m. at Usrey, Pell City.

Perry Moorer is my great great great grandfather. His daughter Caroline Errelvies Moorer Runyans is my great great grandmother, and their daughter Annie Mae Runyans was my great grandma. The Ashville Cemetery in town - where exactly is that one?
